Dear Captains

Entries for QErgs are open! The deadline for entries is the 28th October before the competition on 7th November. Please fill out the form here to enter!<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfkmmwMJntEVitHOISUKBAUrESZhGn_WxDnwSdsGnPt3-GKjA/viewform>

As we have said, the rules are going to be a bit different this year. The event is still going to be just as fun! This is a brief overview of some of the rules we have changed, so that you can let your coaches and novices know and have an idea about how the event will run. All crews will be required to sign a copy of the rules (found here)<https://docs.google.com/document/d/15riaJF3mdUpF5C3Yuqu0hNUFpzTMTGFrUkMo1UhPid4/edit?usp=sharing> which goes into full detail.

Firstly, the event will be held outside, under a marquee on Erasmus Lawn in Queens’ College. Crews will also marshal outside, and be socially distanced from each other. Crews are limited to 8 competitors and one coach, captain or cox, so 9 people in total. We know this risks excluding especially novice coxes, but unfortunately we have to limit the number of people coming into college. All competitors will be required to show proof of a negative lateral flow test taken in the 24 hours preceding their division, without exceptions. We will be lenient on allowing subs should competitors have to isolate, but everyone will be checked for this proof at the gate.

When marshalling and while competing, crews will be socially distanced from each other. We are assuming that as crews meet and train regularly together outside of QErgs, each member of the crew would be considered a close contact anyway and therefore social distancing within crews does not reduce the risk of possible transmission. There will be hand sanitiser available and competitors are encouraged to wear face masks. Ergs will be sanitised in between divisions. There will be a one way system operating through college, but QCBC marshals will assist with this.

Divisions will be reduced to 8 crews each – usually we have about 11 or 12 per division. This limits the number of crews who can enter. We have therefore decided that each college will be guaranteed a crew on each side, so NM1 and NW1, but please do enter any additional crews you want to enter. These will be entered into a random ballot to assign the remaining slots, and we will let you know as soon as possible after entries close whether you have been successful. We are also running a mixed senior division, where crews are made up of 4 men and 4 women. This year we are adding the additional rule to the senior division that competitors must not have competed in QErgs before – this is to give a chance to everyone who noviced last year! There will also be no finals – the winning crew will simply be the one with the fastest overall time!

We have also changed the format of the race slightly as we are using different software. It is still an 8x500m relay, but there is no 20 second rest period in between each competitor – after 500m, the distance will pause, but the timer keeps going! So teach your novices how to get on and off an erg quickly…

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns, and we look forward to seeing all your novices on the ergs!

Best,

Anna Feest
