Have just received the message below from Bill Key. Laurie was a central character in the Cambridge rowing scene over many decades, and will be missed by both the town and University rowing community.

Laurie Hallifax

It is with great sadness that I advise you that Laurie Hallifax died last Saturday 7th March 2009.

He had battled with cancer for a long time but to Laurie this was a mere inconvenience to his rowing activities that took priority over his illness. He regularly took part in rowing events and recently had considerable success at the World Masters Regatta in Lithuania winning in an over 80 (octogenarian) 8 which beat the Japanese and his quad also won. He came second in the single sculls.

He had been "patched up" from time to time over many years for various forms of cancer but unfortunately his long battle came to an end on Saturday although up to a week ago he had been discussing with builders the work he needed doing on his house.

Laurie was a past President of the City of Cambridge Rowing Club and Vice President of the CRA.
He was a Trustee of the Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust and was very enthusiastic about the course and also the use of Milton Country Park for bringing on Scullers.
He was a much respected coach and worked with the Cambridge University Lightweight Crew for many years.

He was a remarkable man, always very positive and an inspiration to to all who knew him.
