Dear all,
Today during racing I was witness to some utterly unacceptable
language/behaviour from the most senior crews. I am also aware of other
instances during the day - including via complaints made by members of the
public. These consisted of loud, repeated offensive language from crews
during and after racing, and also repeated offensive insults being shouted
at opposing crews during and after racing.
The Chief Umpires would like to remind you all that Bumps is a
public event, our spectators range in age from 0 to 90+. I myself have 3
young children who regularly attend Bumps. We are also all representing
our Colleges and the University of Cambridge in a major public setting.
Foul language on its own can be a natural response to emotional situations,
but that which was witnessed today was unnecessary. That which was
directed at other crews we consider to be completely unacceptable and
unsporting, and is not something that we consider to be part of Bumps or
our University.
Several hefty fines have been issued today, and we hope this stands as a
warning to everyone. Further unsporting behaviour directed at other crews
may result in sporting sanctions. We do not want a race result to be
decided by punishments, but if we witness or are made aware of today's
behaviour again we will not hesitate to consider all actions, up to
disqualifying offending crews, including those at the Headship.
May we all have an exciting and pleasant Saturday, I wish all crews the
very best.
