Please also find attached detailed information for competition crews, which includes marshalling instructions - please ensure all coxes and bank parties have read these instructions carefully, these can also be accessed through the Getting-On Race webpage. We are aware of the large number of exams taking place on Friday 10th and appreciate that many crews will have a preference to race in the later (6:30 pm) division, we are however limited by the number of crews we can safely run in each division - the current split of crews between the two divisions has been made randomly and equally for Mens? and Womens? boats. If your crew needs to swap divisions, it would help us if you could find a crew from the other division to swap with, swaps will need to be confirmed by both clubs concerned via email (to committee at cucbc.org ) before 5pm on Thursday 9th June. If you wish to scratch a crew, the deadlines for informing us, by emailing commitee at cucbc.org , are as follows: The deadline for scratching completely for a full refund is Wednesday 8th June at 17:00. The deadline for scratching completely for half a refund is Thursday 9th June at 17:00. If you would like to switch a crew to racing for time only, you are eligible for a half refund so long as you tell us by Thursday 9th June at 17:00. Crews which haven?t scratched and don?t race will still be charged the full entry fee. I?ll attempt to explain the process now: The number of lower boats each college enters year to year changes the most, after entries close the Senior Committee have to make a decision on how many divisions to run based on the number of entries, this year there will be 9 divisions. The composition of Women?s and Men?s crews in the split division is based on the proportion of entries from Womens? and Mens? crews - this year the 9th division will comprise of 6 Women's crews and 12 Men?s crews. CUCBC then take off an equal number of boats as those ?new' entries for the Women?s and Men?s competitions, up to a max. of 18 to determine which crews must race the Getting-On to ?qualify? for the main Bumps races. Due to the number of divisions and entries from Women's and Men?s crews changing each year (including the loss of crews that competed in the last round of Bumps, but did not enter this year), the the cut off point for determining which crews have to compete in the Getting-On race will change each year - i.e. crews are not guaranteed their place in Bumps if they finished 17 positions from the foot of their competition the last time Bumps was run. Those crews required to race the Getting-On race this year, who have a position from May Bumps 2019, will be put back on the 2022 start order where they finished in 2019, if they are among the crews that ?qualify? for Mays 2022; new entries that ?qualify? will be inserted to the bottom of their competition randomly. Hopefully that explains why some of the crews you expected not to have to compete in the Getting-On race will have to qualify for Bumps this year. If there are any Getting-On race crews that have been unable to secure a division swap and/or request eligible subs for the race, so have no alternative but to scratch, please let us know (also via email) - if you have already been in touch about this, please could you confirm your situation has not changed. Finally, we?ve had a few questions about row-throughs during the Getting-On race. CUCBC will take control of navigation at 5 pm on Friday. If eligible boats would like to hop the lock between GoR divisions please me know (luke at cucbc.org ) - we will ask you to marshal with the boats racing in the second GoR division, you can then row down ahead of the racing crews to land at Baitsbite before the second division starts - we can only save a space for you if we know to expect you though. There will also be a single combined hour, for Womens? and Mens? 1st VIIIs and VIIs in the 1st and 2nd Division of May Bumps, after the Getting-On race on Friday from 19:30 - 20:30. We are hoping that these will take place in person - we hope to confirm this, as well as the location of the briefings soon). The Senior briefing will be held at 19:30, and the Novice briefing will be held at 20:00 (and should be done by 20:40). Novice coxes (defined as those who have not competed as a cox in a set of CUCBC* run bumps before) must attend in person, unless they receive prior permission to miss it from the CUCBC Safety Officer. Senior coxes (those who have competed before) may be represented by another senior cox, provided that representative signs in and undertakes to brief them in turn before the start of racing. Many of you have been doing this far longer than I, but if you're new to bumps and want an idea of what your cox is (or maybe should...) be doing, feel free to join in! Attendance at the briefings will be taken: The named cox, or a senior cox attending the briefing on behalf of another senior cox, must sign-in for each competing crew - failure to do so may result in crews being unable to race next week. If you are required to attend a briefing and know that you will not be able to make the allocated times, please get in touch with us ASAP. There were several severe failures to clear, causing interruptions in racing and resulting in several technical rowovers being awarded. Please remind all of your crews that they must continue rowing upon being bumped - not least because it keeps their cox safe! No runners with bank-parties Handheld filming by cyclists is banned at all times (including the row down to the start - the towpath can be just as busy in both directions!) and with all handheld devices (including selfie sticks). Cameras which are mounted to helmets or bike handles are permitted. Coxes - please take a look behind you before clearing to help you to decide which side to clear to, and if reasonably possible row on rather than park on a corner. The results of Thursday's races are available here: www.cucbc.org/mays Notes from the Umpires - Thank you to all of the clubs with marshalling slots today - we had a full complement, which contributed to everything running smoothly. - It is going to be extremely hot tomorrow. Crews, but in particular bank parties, marshals and umpires who will be by the river for a long time are strongly encouraged to bring plenty of water, suncream, and a hat. Seeking shade wherever possible is also strongly encouraged. We can be flexible with asking crews to get back into boats a bit later, but only if those instructions are followed promptly. - An electronic device was handed in at control. If the owner can make themselves known and describe it sufficiently accurately / prove ownership, we?ll be happy to return it. - Upon bumping, coxes and coaches should assess what's going on behind them. Unless there's a crew in close proximity there will likely be time and space enough to paddle on a little way to a safe bit of bank. We saw a lot of crews today clearing to the inside line on corners who did not have to park up in those potentially hazardous places. - Crews being bumped must row on, to prevent injury to your own cox - Crews bumping must hold it up to allow separation of both boats. The crew must then row on to clear the racing line, and not start celebrating. - Handheld filming while cycling is banned at all times, including on the row down. The towpath is busy enough without cyclists who are not paying full attention to where they are going. - Both umpires and members of the public reported crews urinating in public, which we should remember is illegal. Portaloos are provided at the control desk, please do not urinate in public. Secondly, I wanted to get in touch and ask for your feeling on the current format and content of the coxes briefing. It gets rewritten every few years and a revision is due before Lents. So consider this your chance to feed into what next years novices will get subjected to! What was useful, what was unclear, what needs changing. Otherwise, I hope you've all enjoyed May Week. Have a lovely summer. Best, Isabel PS If any of you are round Cambridge over the summer and fancy doing a bit of coxing, please do get in touch. I've got friends in a number of town clubs, and they are always looking for keen coxes.
