We'll be meeting at 7pm in the Divinity School Main Lecture Theatre. Ideally, every cox would receive individual coaching, the same way most rowers do, but from talking to various clubs over the last few months most simply don't have enough experienced coxes with sufficient spare time to make that a reality. (Kudos to the clubs which do - you lucky so and sos.) In place of that (slightly impractical) ideal, some of the more experienced former college coxes still in Cambridge have kindly agreed to speak briefly about an aspect of coxing which they think will help improve coxing on the Cam. After that, we'll aim to break into smaller groups for a much less structured chat. The idea behind that chat is to provide a venue for less experienced coxes to raise any issue they're looking for advice on or having problems with. While that's never going to be as good as direct one-to-one attention on the water, it will provide an opportunity to learn from the experiences (and mistakes) of others. The session is planned as pretty informal, so if people need to run at any stage, feel free. Otherwise, we'll stay and chat as long as there are people who want to. Again, from talking to various captains last term, this is primarily aimed at less experienced coxes (in their first year or two or coxing), but is open to anyone who wants to come along. James will send round the list of recordings discussed in a few days when he's had a chance to collate them. Feel free to contact any of us about town clubs. We'll all (try and) provide a relatively unbiassed assessment of which clubs might suit your preferences. I hope last night was at least some use to some of you. As I said at the start, this is something of an experiment as a way of providing a bit more support to coxes in Cambridge. If it was useful, I'd like to see it as something which could be run once or twice a term, but I don't believe for an moment that we've hit on the ideal format at the first attempt. Please do get in touch if you have any feelings about aspects which were useful, aspects which could be done better, and aspects which were just a waste of everyone's time. If you'd like it run again, what would you like discussed then? Did the questions/chat format for the second half work? Would it be easier in smaller groups? Are we a bunch of pretentious windbags in love with the sound of our own voices? (Probably yes - we wouldn't still be coxing if at some level we didn't like talking...) We all would like to see the general standard of coxing improved in Cambridge by any means practical, so we really won't take offence at critical feedback. The current interpretation of Rule 9 is that it applies to rowers only; coxes may cox with town clubs out of hours whilst remaining eligible for CUCBC events. This was most recently clarified in Michaelmas 2015, but is being restated now to make sure there are no doubts about coxes accidentally rendering themselves ineligible for bumps. We are currently looking for coxes for our women?s squad, made up of around 20 rowers (though this number expands as the weather gets better!). If you're not familiar with X-Press, we're one of the smaller town clubs, focussing exclusively on adult rowing, and with active sweep and sculling programs. As a small club, we're also pretty sociable - with regular post-outing coffees and pub- types, and semi-regular club social events. The women's squad has a big mix of age ranges (early 20s to late 50s), nationalities and backgrounds, including quite a number of ex-college rowers. Our W1 crew is third on the river in town Bumps, having moved up 8 places in the past 2 years. We are currently in training for WeHORR and are probably looking for a cox for that race ? and beyond. Later in the year, we are hoping to take the crew to Women?s Henley as well as other off-Cam and International regattas, and of course to maintain or improve our place in town Bumps! Our W2 crew won blades in Bumps last year, and also compete regularly both on- and off-Cam. They may also enter a crew for WeHORR and are potentially looking at racing in the Masters National Championships later in the year. Both crews train on the water three times a week (evenings and weekends ? so generally no early mornings and hopefully no clashes with uni teaching) so if you?re interested in coxing a competitive crew without the same level of commitment as college rowing, please do get in touch! We do have a number of regular coxes for both crews, but so if you can't commit to the full training regime, we'd still love to hear from you! Shuold you require any other information, please get back to me. Kind regards, Sara X-Press W1 captain -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Secondly, a reminder to coxswains regarding life jackets when coxing bow loaded boats. You *MUST NOT* use* automatically inflating life jackets* when coxing a *bow loader*. If the life jacket doesn't have a pull chord to inflate, assume it is an automatically inflating jacket (meaning it'll inflate upon submersion in water). If a bow loader capsizes, an automatic life jacket can inflate, trapping you in the boat under the water, so it is imperative you wear a manual one which you can inflate if required when you've gotten out of the boat.
