Outlook: Provisional Yellow. The Environment Agency have issued a Flood Alert for the lower river. Tomorrow morning may bring both flooding around the boathouses and significant stream/flow. Should the flag remain yellow, we would like to remind coxes of senior crews that high flow will push them into the outside of corners, and downstream whilst otherwise stationary/spinning. Please leave significant gaps between boats, and spin well above Baitsbite Lock. Also note that holding position will require taking strokes/backing down, and that keeping the upstream end of the boat pointing in towards the bank is advised. The meeting is being held on Sunday 23rd November at 19:00 in the Gillespie Centre Auditorium, Memorial Court, Clare College. It is very important that any novice cox or cox who has not coxed Fairbairns before attends this meeting. So please come along even if your crew are not entering Clare Novices. The presentation will go over marshalling before and after the race, safety procedures and will finish with some advice on how best to approach the toughest corners on the course. The Fairbairns course is long and technical, and your coxing can make a big difference to your crew's result. I would appreciate it if senior coxes forwarded this email onto any novice coxes in their club who may not be on this mailing list. Thanks in advance. Crews attempting starts, half- or proper full pressure receive a ?25 fine for the first offence, ?50 for a second time in one term, and a one week training ban (including any races) for third offence. Please also be considerate to other crews when doing practice starts on the Long Reach, and try to minimise the time spent stationary before a start. Thanks to all of you who came along to the coxes meeting. Attached are 'Coxes Notes for Fairbairns', which are more in depth than the presentation. After safety, the most important bit to get right is the start marshaling procedure, as there are a large number of boats facing in both directions on a thin stretch of river. So it is important that you are know where you want to go and how you will be getting there. I hope it was clear today but if not this should help. The second document, 'Coxing Fairbairns for Newcomers', is advice for taking the hardest corners on the course. Though reading this is no substitute for practicing (where permitted by CUCBC). Some of the document is aimed at people who do not normally row on the Cam (i.e there is no need to look things up on Google Maps!) so you can ignore this. Novices will only need to take the first two corners mentioned, and those racing in a IV the first three. Feel free to ask me any questions. I will do my best to answer them myself and if I can't I will forward them onto a senior cox at Jesus for you.
