When there is substantial ice on the river (the guideline on the Cam is that the ice is more than 1mm thick more than 2m from the bank), crews should not boat. Ice poses a hazard to the hull as it can cut through the relatively thin and delicate composite material, in turn leading to swamping of the boat. The river is now thawing out, though ice remains across the river at Ditton corner and on Plough Reach. As the ice starts to thaw out now, the flag will be downgraded from red, though crews who do choose to boat should exercise extreme caution. If you encounter ice, turn back and do not attempt to row through it. At present, crews should not proceed beyond Ditton Corner. As usual, if you don't think continuing or even boating in the first place is safe don't do it! During busy periods of the day, we may keep a yellow rather than green flag as the restricted usable length of the river limits the number of crews that can safely be out at any one time. Crews are advised to bring extra layers, kept in a plastic bag to keep them dry in the boat, or carried by coaches on the bank. Also, try not to sit around not moving (this includes fours or pairs sitting out during a warm up - keep rotating who's rowing) for extended periods of time. If anyone is displaying symptoms of hypothermia (turning pale, shivering, limited mobility, slow mental responses, slurred speech), they should put on extra layers and get back to the boathouse as quickly as possible to warm up. Cyclists should exercise caution as there is substantial snow and ice on the towpath. This may mean you will need to spend more time looking where you are going rather than at your crew and you may need to cycle slower than usual over snowy or icy patches (common sense really!) If you encounter any problems, please do report them to the CUCBC Executive Committee (committee at cucbc.org). We just want to get in touch with everyone to give you some details about the development squad that we run in the summer so that you can start to put some dates in your diaries. *What is Dev Squad?* Following the end of the summer term, we run a four week development group where we bring together people from all colleges who are considering rowing for the University in the Henley Boat Races 2013. You will work in small groups with the CUWBC coaches to rapidly increase the standard of your rowing. It will also give you an idea of the level of training that we will expect of you when you are trialling. You will spend a significant proportion of the time in Dev Squad working in small boats, and learning to scull. This will give you a solid base on which to build in September when trialling for the University squads begins in earnest. *Why should I do it?* Your standard of rowing will improve markedly in that time. The weather is generally good, and there are plenty of opportunities to race both on and off the Cam, building your experience further. You will learn how to race side-by-side with other crews. It's also great fun. For an idea of what university rowing looks like, on and off the water, have a look at one of the videos from the training camp that we held in January in France at http://vimeo.com/35875584 *But I don't think I'm good enough!* Let us be the judge of that. We are looking for potential. It doesn't matter to us whether your crew has been Head of the River, or lost every race. We don't care whether you are in the first boat at a big college, or a lower boat at a small college. What we are looking for is the potential to help us beat Oxford in 2013. *What are the dates?* We will start on Monday 25th June, the Monday after May Week, and run through to 22nd July. But if people are around in Cambridge longer over the summer, most of the coaches live here (or nearby) and will absolutely be keen to keep working with people. *Ok, I'm interested, what do I have to do?* Drop an e-mail to dev-squad at cuwbc.org - we don't need to know much from you at this stage. When you do so, please let us know your availability (in case there are any dates when you will have to be away from Cambridge). Please note that while we understand that some people have internships/placements that are unavoidable, we will give priority to people that make the commitment to be available for the whole period of Dev Squad. Also let us know if you're around over the Easter holidays at all, as there may be the potential to organise some sessions there as well. There will be a meeting after Lent Bumps is out of the way for anyone who has expressed an interest. We will also want to do an initial round of ergo testing, not to form a basis of selection at this stage, but so that we can get an idea of where you are now and monitor your improvement. This will take the form of a 1k ergo rate capped at 24. If anyone has any questions, please get in touch, either with me or one of the current squad rowers ( http://www.cuwbc.org/2012/02/05/2012-henley-boat-races-crews). Our aim is for you to become the best athletes you possibly can, progressing from college level rowing, to University rowing, and then potentially onwards to row for GB U23 and beyond. We want to help you achieve great things. And we want to beat Oxford. You can help us do that! We hope to hear from you soon, CUWBC -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are still looking for a few more people to help out - particularly the upper divisions (W2, M2, W1) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It is important that we have a full compliment of Umpires to ensure that the races run smoothly. Please do consider helping out. Umpiring is a really fun way to get involved in the Bumps - you get to see and be involved in the action from up close on the towpath, either cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire at key points on the course. In addition to this, you will get a free dinner, probably the week after Bumps and umpiring will reduce the number of marshals that your club needs to provide. To help out, you don't need to have umpired before although we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of Bumps in the past. There will be a meeting for all umpires where we will explain everything and those that have not umpired before will be paired with a 'senior' during the races. If you would like to help out, please sign up at http://www.cucbc.org/lents/umpires/signup indicating which divisions you are available for (the times of the divisions are listed at http://www.cucbc.org/lents/times). You can both compete and umpire (although obviously don't sign up to umpire a division you're competing in!) If you have any questions, please get in touch. Remember, in the event of a collision between a coxless and coxed boat, the cox is 9 times out of 10 taken to be at fault. It is unacceptable that coxes have completely ignored scullers after causing significant danger (or even harm) to their boats, put simply, it is rude and not in keeping with the image college rowing should be trying to display. Bumps may be near at hand, but that is no excuse for dangerous behaviour in any situation - several crews that have been reported recently have been severely penalised.
