We have a range of crews to suit all abilities and commitment levels. We offer coaching and opportunities to race both on and off Cam. At the top end of the squads we are looking to build on our HWR win in 2010 to continue to compete at a National level. If you are without a boat this term and think you might be interested in joining our vibrant, social and competitive club please drop me an email. Lighting times can be found on the CUCBC website - http://www.cucbc.org If you are out within 15 minutes after lighting down or before lighting up, you will need a *white* light attached to both the bow and stern of your boat. Note that a red light is not a white light (it may seem obvious, but Cambridge students have been known to make this mistake in the past). Lights are required for safety as it is starting to get dark at these times and your boat needs to be visible to others on the river. No college crew may be on the water before lighting down or after lighting up. Only overtake another crew when it is a) Safe to do so b) There are no crews coming the other way c) You are not on a bend (including under the Railway Bridge) d) You can safely get around them and back to your side of the river without impeding them or other crews e) You have asked to "come by" (and received a response) so that everyone is aware of the manoeuvre you are attempting to make. It is generally considerate for slower crews to let faster crews by (and to keep tucked in so they can get by), though faster crews should not overtake unless the above conditions are met! Though please be aware that when overtaking a novice crew they may have difficulty getting out the way as new coxes are getting to grips with steering. Please be patient and do not just go charging through at full speed!! Dangerous overtaking can lead to potentially serious accidents - let's not let them happen! There have been a couple of alterations to the timetable to take into account crews scratching, but those directly affected should already have been contacted. Please be aware of the following points: 1) Hours of darkness - now the clocks have gone back, it will begin to get dark not long after 4 pm. Even if the last race in your event is scheduled to end before 4pm, delays can and do occur, so the racing may overrun long enough that you will have to return to the boathouses in twilight or after dusk. All racing crews, with the possible exception of those who have an odd round as the first race of the day then go straight home, should carry lights. 2) Clothing - the weather forecast for the next few days is relatively good, but you will still have to sit around for tens of minutes while other races go off. Make sure you wear enough that you are still warm when it is your turn to race. 3) Bow Balls / heel restraints - committee members may make [pseudo]random spot checks of bow balls, heel restraints and other safety equipment. If your boat is found to be unsafe, you will not be allowed to race. 4) Marshalling times - One crew being late to marshal can delay racing for everybody. While I will obviously be lenient to crews who are late because their previous race was delayed, any crew turning up late to their first race of the day will be given an official warning equivalent to a false start (if they are less than two minutes late for their marshalling slot) or disqualified (if more than two minutes late). Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. -- Chris Kerr St Catharine's College CULRC Hon: Sec: 2008-11
