Dear all, CULRC are looking for athletes to take part in their Development Squad this summer. Anybody is welcome to trial for it, but in particular we are looking for athletes who weigh 80kg or less and who will be in a position to trial next year. We are also looking for coxes who are keen to trial next year. The important thing at this stage is to demonstrate the potential to improve to the required level, and not absolute performance. This is intended as a useful period of four weeks (Monday 21st June to Sunday 18th July) where we will begin the process of beating Oxford in the 2011 Boat Race. However, participation in the Development Squad is not a requirement to join formal trialling in September, so don't fret if you already have plans this summer. There will be a meeting for those interested on Monday 10th May at 4.45pm (finished in time for men's hour) at Goldie BH in the Captains' Room. We will introduce next year's junior committee, as well as provide a summary of the successful Boat Race campaign this year, and how we intend to progress from this position. There will then be a 2k selection erg on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th May at Goldie BH at 2pm on both days. Please do not make your own judgements of what is a suitable 2k...as said, it is about potential and not current performance. If you cannot make either of these erg days or indeed the meeting, then please let me know by email. The intention is to hold the erg asap after the meeting so people can get on with organising College accommodation. If there is a real problem here, then let me know and we may be able to help arrange something for you, along the lines of camping on the floor of another rower. Different to the Development Squads of previous years, we plan on only taking 16 athletes plus 2 coxes, with scope for fewer or more depending on the quality of the applicants. We will race at Kingston and Molesey Regattas where we have won the Victor Ludorums for most successful club in the last few years. Although there is flexibility within this for talented athletes who can only make three of those weeks, we will primarily be looking for athletes who can make the whole period and who will also be in a position to trial next year for the 2011 campaign. Coxes will essentially be selected by previous experience, but again, priority will be given to those who are able to trial next year, so do apply if you would like to be considered. Message-ID: Hello Coxes! I have been asked by the Senior Committee to send out an email ticking you all off for the number of accidents that have happened on the river over the last few weeks, a lot of which seem to have been the result of dangerous coxing. Generally I am quite sympathetic towards coxes on the Cam as I know how tricky it is to cox on a tiny river with so many boats, but from what I understand a number of the accidents over the last few weeks have been the result of seriously dangerous and totally unnecessary coxing, and really this is not good enough. In most other clubs across the country any contact between two boats is an extremely serious event, and I think its important we don't let the peculiarities of the Cam become an excuse for accidents; we should be able to avoid any accidents at all. A lot of these accidents were the result of really negligent coxing, and collectively we need to raise our game as this kind of thing is not good enough. Ted's top tips: 1. You as a cox are totally in charge of keeping your boat safe. 2. Often coaches and crews are not able to notice dangerous situations as they are concentrating on other things. Make sure if you see something dangerous, act immediately as your bankparty may not have seen it. Don't wait to check. 3. Take control; don't be bullied into doing something by your coach and crew that you don't think is safe. 4. If you are going to hit something, stop. All too often coxes think stopping is an admission of guilt. This is not the case. Stopping is much better than a big clash, damaging your boat/blades, or even someone breaking a wrist. Just stop, and then establish who was most in the wrong. 5. Always ask to come by before overtaking a crew. 6. Whenever you are doing something that might be risky, make sure you have checked it is indeed safe rather than just taking someone else's word for it. The level of accidents has now become so high that the CUCBC are starting to consider not just fines, but possible training bans. Most of these serious accidents could have been prevented by sensible coxing, so make sure your actions do not give the Senior Committee the opportunity to ban your boat from the water. Happy coxing, Ted From events.secretary at championrowing.org.uk Sat May 15 13:23:00 2010 From: events.secretary at championrowing.org.uk (Events Secretary) Date: Sat, 15 May 2010 14:23:00 +0100 Subject: [CUCBC Coxes] Reminder - closing date for Champs Eights Head is Tuesday 18th May at 6pm Message-ID: <001501caf431$bd83d970$388b8c50$@secretary@championrowing.org.uk> Hi Captains/ Coaches/Coxes Thank you to those that have already entered online. ***REMINDER*** CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES IS NEXT TUESDAY 18TH MAY 6pm Link to online entry: http://champs.aci-net.co.uk/register.cgi?event=1 CHAMPS EIGHTS HEAD -SUNDAY 23rd MAY 2010 DIVS AT 12.00, 1.30pm and 3.00pm This is a great pre Bumps Cam event for university and town club eights.
