Over the coming weeks, it is undoubtedly going to be busy as people make preparations for bumps which is only 6 weeks away. It is therefore really important that everyone keeps to the Golden rules. If I could also highlight the following which are essential: Always make sure you have a life jacket and a bow ball on your boat. We might get days with heavy fog this term. If you find yourself caught in heavy fog, DON'T plough through it at high speed and be prepared to stop with little notice. At the corners, make sure you keep on side and at the crossing points, make sure you cross over at the signs and with purpose, remembering that the boat moving upstream has right of way. Lighting down is now before 07:30, so please make sure that your cox box is turned down low if you are on the water before 07:30, and keep commands to a minimum and use only what is necessary - by this I mean "bow pair in.. go." There should be no coaching before 07:30 Please pay particular attention to courtesy and common sense. Whatever happens, avoid confrontation if possible, especially with boat owners and keep your rowers under control. Please also make sure that if your coach does want to have a chat with you, make sure you are pulled right in to the bank (and blades pulled in if necessary) so that there is room for other crews to get past. Finally, the Lent bumps will start on the 24th February ( getting on race on the Friday before). The pre-bumps safety meeting is therefore planned for Sunday 22nd Feb. It is compulsory for all coxes to attend, so please keep this evening completely free. In these parts of the river, it is especially narrow and is most susceptible to becoming a bottle neck and/or place of accidents. It is NOT COOL to stop and be coached on this section of the river as we need to keep traffic moving through this zone. Whether your coach tells you to stop so he can say something, or he starts talking because you've crashed on Grassy, tell him/her that you CANNOT STOP there and that you need to move on. Please make an effort with this. Thanks, Mark CUCBC Coxing -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are looking for a cox to train with us so we can race in the getting on race on the 20th Feb. We train on Mondays AM, Wednesdays AM and Saturday afternoons. Would anyone like to cox for us? At the moment we are having real problems finding people to cox and we would be so grateful if someone from another college could come out with us. Even if you can't commit regularly to training for the getting on race if you can cox occasionally that would also be great. Speaking of which is anyone available this Wednesday? We meet at 7.15 to push off at 7.30. If anyone fancies coxing us that would be fantastic. Thanks very much! Bryony Enright -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'd therefore like to distribute a set of slides which hopefully make it clear how we expect people to tackle the crossover zones. Please take the time to look through the slides and make sure you understand the content. If you have any questions at all, please get in touch. I'd also like to make a quick point regarding life jackets: There are a lot of vest-type life jackets around, which are secured with a zip. In the winter, when we are wearing loads of clothing (and look like Michelin men.or at least I do) you might find that you can't physically get these lifejackets zipped up. It is NOT ok to just wear the jacket, but leave it unzipped. If you can't fit, then you must find another life jacket which can be fastened securely. If you don't have a life jacket which can be secured correctly, then you can't boat. It's also worth noting that these "buoyancy aids" have a specific weight rating and won't keep you afloat if you exceed it - so again, please check your life jackets are suitable. If in doubt, talk to your captains. Yours, Mark Stringer CUCBC Coxing Rep -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... After 7.30 please still try to keep noise levels down, especially around the Grassy Corner area. This is to avoid the prospect of early morning rowing being banned entirely. Please also remember that lighting down is the earliest time you can push off - you may not push off beforehand and sit in the middle of the river. All crews boating within 15 minutes of lighting down also need white lights on both bow and stern, including single sculls. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Dear All, Further to Mark's message and powerpoint presentation he sent out last week, it is regretable that we have had received reports of further incidents taking place over the last three days. In each case it would appear that crews have either crossed over too early or too late (thus ending up on the wrong side of the river) or have failed to give way to traffic (including scullers) travelling upstream. You really must ensure that this does not happen, whatever pressure your coach or crew put you under, or however much they tell you to go one because 'there's loads of room'. I appreciate how much pressure there is on everyone in this Term to bring crews on, and how keen we all are to use every bit of clear water we can without being held up, but these rules MUST be observed. They are not CUCBC rules, they are navigational law, enforceable by the Cam Conservtors and, should there be an accident as a result of a crew failing to observe either rule, the crew concerned is likely to be prosecuted by the Conservancy and pursued by insurers. In such a situation, you, the Cox, would be held liable as you are in charge of the boat, whatever those around you might be instructing you to do. So please, for your own safety and that of your crew and other river users, make sure once again that you fully understand the rules as they relate to where to cross over and who us the right of way (crews 'going home' always do) and that you abide by them. You should note that any breach of the rules reported to the Exec and which can be substantiated will almost certainly result in a training ban being imposed on that crew, if not the whole Club, and could also result in the crew being disqualified from Lents. Observing the rules may at times be inconvenient and may mean that you have to stand up to your crew and/or coach but, believe me, it is in your own best interest as the cox, and the best interests of your club, for you to do so.
