Please make sure that you know the times for lighting up and that you allow for possible delays due to congestion around this period, to enable you to make it back to the boathouses on time. Also, make sure that you have lights in the periods close to lighting up and lighting down - check the CUCBC handbook if you are unsure. A second point is that there is NO FIRM PRESSURE allowed upstream of Chesterton. Not only is this in place to reduce the wash on house boats, but there are also likely to be slow moving/stationary boats in this zone as well as novices/tubs. As coxes, it is your job to ensure that your crew is not steaming upstream in this part of the river, not the stroke or coach. Take care, and keep safe, Mark -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please follow the link to the relevant event from the CUCBC homepage for details. Thank you to all women's and coxless crews for waiting while we re-rowed a dead heat from the men's coxed event, and commiserations to Girton who lost the re-row by just over 2 seconds. Coxes in the women's event, please ensure that you start well over to your side of the river and stay on your side off the start - every single race today moved towards the middle, which is unacceptable. You must stay on your side for the entirety of the race, winning or losing. Crews marshalling at the Penny Ferry tomorrow, please park either on the towpath side at the Penny Ferry or directly opposite it, not on the meadow side down towards Chesterton (where we can't communicate with you!). Please note the below points and try your hardest not to cause problems. Firstly, crews should avoid contact with moored barges as much as is possible. They are NOT an extension of the bank, and it is almost always possible to avoid touching them at all. If you absolutely have to push off them, push off very gently with blades touching the black section just *above* the waterline. By pushing off you are likely to scratch and damage the moored boat. Be particularly careful along Jesus Green, Midsummer Common and Riverside, as this is where the majority of incidents occur. Novice coxes should stop if in danger of colliding. Secondly, be civil to members of the public, particularly those living on boats. If you unfortunately do have to push off a moored boat and the owner speaks to you or your coach, apologise and do not, under any circumstances, be rude to them - I have had reports of this. Abusive behaviour carries a ?25 minimum fine under our rules and your college Senior Tutors will, I am sure, be thoroughly unimpressed with any such reports. Thirdly, coaches must be sensible when cycling, keeping eyes on both the road and the river. You are reminded that cycling on pavements is an offence - along Riverside you should cycle on the road. Please also be considerate on paths, and try to avoid getting in the way of joggers and other members of the public. We must try to promote a positive view of the rowing community and everyone has a part to play in this. Please pass on this message to all coaches. If there are any messages you would normally send to me that you want to be sure have been seen and dealt with in my absence, please ensure you also send or copy them to the committee or to Ian Thompson in this period. There are starting to be questions raised about the adoption of the 'two boat' early morning restrictions. For information, certainly until a couple of days ago (latest sheets not analysed), the maximum number of boats out on any morning so far has been 55, ie less than the c. 64 that the 'restriction' would permit. There also appear to have been only 4 or 5 clubs commonly putting out more than two boats on a morning. I'm pleased (and a bit surprised) we've got this far into term without bringing in restrictions. We will keep the numbers of boats and congestion experienced under review, and will also not bring in the restrictions based on the experience of a single 'bad' morning. It will help delay this if you can try and plan crews to spread their outings in the time available (ie not all dash for home at the same time at 0830), though I appreciate this is not entirely under your control and will become more difficult as lighting down gets later. Message-ID: <25093071BC3F41A49107DB83D03529F7@pet.cam.ac.uk> Guys, Emails are starting to float in regarding our behaviour on the Cam. A few things then: Be aware that town crews are not bound by any of our restrictions and you may therefore encounter boats going in the opposite direction to all the college crews (ie around lighting up time in the afternoon or after 8am in the morning). So please don't try dodgy overtaking manoeuvres because you assume all the traffic is going one way! When you are pushing off, check that it is clear to do so - don't push off into the middle of the river and then sit there because there isn't anywhere for you to go. If you see a queue of boats formed up, don't try and skip past it to get home a full one minute earlier. If you find yourself in the wrong, then apologise! It's especially frustrating if you;ve had to hold it up because another boat is on the wrong side of the river. It is even more annoying when the same boat then moves off like nothing has happened. Please move out of the spinning zones as soon as you can - don't spin and then do exercises in the same place for 5min. Move upstream so that other boats can spin in the correct place. Be especially careful around scullers and remember that they are really vulnerable if you clash into them. I think in general, you guys have done a good job so far this year, so keep it up & happy coxing, Mark CUCBC Coxing Rep -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is essential that you check that the jacket you are wearing has a high enough rating to keep you afloat. The rating is clearly marked on a label usually on the inside of the jacket. Life jackets must also be properly secured - If they are not fastened up correctly then you are negating their purpose. a bit like cyclists who ride with helmets hanging off their handle bars! A few novice crews this morning pushed off early and later claimed that they thought it was okay since other novice crews had pushed off. This is completely wrong. The time which you can push off is determined by the lighting down times and the relevant rules governing novice boating. If you push off early, regardless of whether other boats pushed off in front of you, then your club will be fined. So, check your watch before getting your rowers to push off. Secondly, there was a "bit of a mare" at the bottom of the reach this morning. Problems stemmed largely from boats being stagnant, so please make sure that you: a) spin in turn between the posts b) Once spun, get out of the spinning areas as quickly as you can so that traffic continues to move. Novices: If you find yourself being blown over the wrong side of the river while in a queue, try to remedy the situation by using your rowers to first point you at the correct side of the river, then get over as far as you can. Good luck to all the novices racing this weekend. Yours, Mark Stringer CUCBC Coxing Rep -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In particular: - crews in the last races of the day will need LIGHTS (if on the water after 4pm, and possibly earlier) - there may also be non-college crews on the water, so stay on the correct side of the river at all times - crews out early in the morning or in poor visibility may also need lights - you must be quiet in the early morning period, especially crews in the first two divisions tomorrow In particular, visibility tomorrow morning is likely to be limited, so crews are very likely to need lights. You should also obey the flag if one is set. (We are in communication with the race organisers and hope to avoid a flag if at all possible.) Permission will only be given if in pushing out to their place in the queue they do not impede the rest of the circulation pattern. THERE IS NO WARM-UP OR PRACTICE PADDLING ON THE WATER - all crews must warm up on land. Crews should bring enough warm, dry kit to wear when marshalling (particularly after racing). Crews must not stop rowing on the finish line - wind it down and paddle light. Stop, spin and pull in in the finish marshalling area when instructed to do so by a marshal. Crews may not row home until the entire division has finished racing and are instructed do so by the Senior Finish Marshal. Results will not be available from the finish marshals - results will be published online at the end of each day's racing (all results will be available and prizes will be awarded at 17:00 on Friday 5th December at Jesus Boathouse). The crews racing in the last division of each day (that is the Novice VIIIs Divison 2 and the Senior IVs) must have lights - these may be carried by the bank party during the race, however they must be fitted to boats if rowing home in the dark. A representative from each club should collect ALL the race numbers for that club from Jesus Boathouse (the control desk) before 08:30 on Thursday (clubs not racing until Friday may collect their numbers on Friday). All the race numbers for your club will be in a pack along with a copy of the start order and safety pins. Space blankets for competitors may also be collected from Jesus Boathouse (at any time). During racing, marshals will be along the course wearing yellow bibs. Senior umpires will wear red coats. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT MARSHALS' INSTRUCTIONS ARE OBEYED AT ALL TIMES. Any queries or disputes should be directed to myself as Chief Umpire at Jesus Boathouse. If you have any queries, please get in touch...Sorry for the lengthy e-mail! I'm looking forward to a good couple of days' racing - see you there! Message-ID: <41FF5A2D36AC4CC094E81E6C21D4E72A@pet.cam.ac.uk> Guys, The end of term is rapidly approaching, which means fairbairns is coming up soon. Inevitably, there are going to be loads of crews out in the mornings, so please be especially cautious, particularly downstream of Ditton. It goes without saying that under NO circumstances should you be overtaking on a corner. Even if you are one of the top senior eights and there is a slow novice boat ahead of you, don't steam past them on a corner - take it down and wait till it is safe to overtake. I accept it is particularly frustrating if you have to slow down when you are trying to get racing pieces in, but if you collide into another boat at full speed, it is going to be unpleasant. The other point I wanted to make is that the weather forecast is pretty wet and cold for the whole week, so once again make sure that you have enough warm clothes AND waterproofs.
