Hi all, It's a swiftly diminishing six weeks to Lent Bumps (Tue 26 Feb - Sat 1 Mar) and as ever, it relies on your help and presence in order for it to run smoothly! It would be great if as many of you folk out there as possible volunteer to be Junior & Senior Umpires (JUs & SUs). If you're a first-timer, this mostly involves wearing a shiny yellow bib, cycling up and down the tow path following the divisions and keeping an eye on things to ensure it stays safe and seamless. So, if you have rowed or coxed in at least one set of bumps and would be interested in umpiring, please send me an e-mail with your name and college, availability and say whether or not you've umpired before. Obviously the more slots you can do the better, but I'm aware that many people are busy around Lents, so even if you can only manage a couple of divisions then *please* do! A large number of the umpires also row/cox themselves and work the umpiring around it. Lents is a great opportunity to learn for those who may want to SU in future and haven't umpired before to get some experience - and it's also good fun. No, really. As well as getting a lovely free meal and drink at the end of it all, you will also reduce the number of marshall slots your college will have to provide. Winner. The division times are given at: http://www.cucbc.org/node/821 Ideally you'll want to be reporting to the control desk by the Penny Ferry 30 minutes before your divisions start so you can collect equipment from the umpires of the previous division, ask questions, cycle down to the start, ponce around etc, so factor this in when deciding for which divisions you will be available. We'll have a short meeting for all umpires just before the Lents so everyone knows in advance and in detail what they will be doing. Looking forward to the plethora of replies... For the avoidance of doubt, there is now an indicator on the website, just below the flag, to tell you that it's not in operation. Hopefully it's going to stay that way. As far as I know there will be no one way system in the Lent term. If for any reason (I can't think of one) it needs to be introduced, we will let you know, by email and by advertising it on the website. If you hear nothing, there is no one way system - you can do what you like (within reason...). 1a) We've also added an indicator for weekend rowing rules, so that there's no doubt over when you can row at weekends. 2) Please stop making up rules. This is a new and very special problem.... I have absolutely no idea why you would want to invent for yourself any more rules than we already have. If you want more rules, I'm sure the Captains will make you some more, but at least tell the rest of us and give us a chance before attempting to enforce them.... Colourful new "additions" to the handbook I've heard of this week include: a) One way system to Ditton! (did you not hate the Michaelmas term one enough!??!). b) Only spinning between imaginary posts somewhere on the course (again, if you'd like to tell the rest of us where they are....) c) UFOs allowed to enter the Lent bumps Seriously - the handbook is a big document, but the rules themselves are a tiny tiny section (the rest is all constitutions, regs for races, maps etc)....please read them, the vast majority of them are obvious. It's available on the website. 3) Although you can row up and down as you like, you still have to: a) Row on the correct side of the river b) Make a decent attempt to pull into the bank if you stop for coaching/kit removal/re-invention of the wheel etc. c) Behave safely, including not spinning in front of oncoming crews - top marks to Pembroke for attempting to take out your ex-captain rowing in another crew - please stop! d) Use lights if appropriate....whichever college you're from! e) Not boat early....see above. The whole point of our policies and rules is to try to ensure that what time we all get on the water is as productive as possible - especially in the early mornings - and that the Cam is a safe place to row. Neither of these will be the case if people consistently ignore the very basic rules of the river - most of which are common sense! SO please make sure that your crews, all your coxes AND all your coaches are reminded yet again that: BETWEEN THE P&E AND THE LOCK THE FOLLOWING RULES APPLY: Only continuous rowing all VIII unless unsafe to do so or practising a standing start. Standing starts are only permissible when they will not obstruct other crews. No stopping except at Ditton to spin. Spin near post at bottom of Reach. Do not spin elsewhere on the Reach because you can't be bothered to wait your turn and row up to the spinning point. Doing so cause a tale back of traffic all the way into the Plough, blocks the crossing point and then presents potential danger to other crews and craft. If you are doing a piece moving upstream and see a queue at Ditton corner DO NOT row through it and overtake on the bend. Join it and wait - it will undoubtedly have been caused by carnage ahead and you will just add to it by ploughing into it Once you have spun, at Ditton or in the Lock, move off quickly and, if you are going to have coaching chat, pull right into the bank (which means parked with blades in) and, if doing technical exercises in the Lock, stay as close to the bank as possible and make sure you are not blocking other crews who want to row on. Remember always that crews rowing upstream (ie BACK to the boathouses) have the right of way over crews rowind downstream (ie towards the Lock) - especially at the crossing points. Most of this is concisely spelt out in the Code of Practice for Coaches (Appendix I in the Handbook) which should have gone to all coaches yet, yesterday, I saw everyone of the above being ignored and Sidney, Queens', Newnham, Magdalene, Girton, Pembroke, Downing, Robinson, Darwin and St Edmund's should consider themselves very lucky that fines are not being imposed this time. All clubs should note that we are very serious indeed about bringing an end to these bad habits. The wondering marshals will be imposing fines for all breaches from now, and persitent offenders may incur training and/or race bans - including disqualification from Lents.
