It's not super serious, maybe 2-3 outings a week if possible but less would be possible as well as long as the bumps are fine. As well, it's for the lowest devision and it's obviously nice to have an experienced cox but at the moment any cox is better than no cox. So in case there is still somebody around who would like to try the bumps but don't have a boat yet, please please let me know. Message-ID: <2023443e0802101220tb4add88ja0b59842006b2a19@mail.gmail.com> Captains - please forward to your clubs! Hi all, So I've had quite a few replies about umpiring for Lent Bumps in the last few weeks and it's a now very swiftly diminishing two and a half weeks to the first cannon. However, we still need some more of you to volunteer and keep it running seamlessly so please email me now if you can umpire even only one race per day! As long as you've rowed or coxed in at least one set of bumps, then that's the only requirement. If cycling is a problem then we can always find a static position for you. Send me an e-mail with your name and college, availability and say whether or not you've umpired before. I'll take the opportunity again to point out that a large number of the umpires also row/cox themselves and I'll ensure that you have plenty of time to get back to/from your boathouse so your racing isn't affected. Look at it as a warmup cycle! Remember that not only will you get a free meal and drink at the end of it all, you will also reduce the number of marshall slots your college will have to provide. Plus a warm fuzzy feeling inside. The division times are given at: http://www.cucbc.org/node/821 Ideally you'll want to be reporting to the control desk by the Penny Ferry 30 minutes before your divisions start so you can collect equipment from the umpires of the previous division, ask questions, cycle down to the start, ponce around etc, so factor this in when deciding for which divisions you will be available. We'll have a short meeting for all umpires just before the Lents so everyone knows in advance and in detail what they will be doing. While I'm here, the following all said they would umpire but had to check on academic/other commitments. Could these people please confirm their availabilities: Dan Wilkins George Blessley Chris Kerr Matt Castle Jo Jones James Head Ailsa Benton Jo Robinson Hope to hear from lots of you... That during the ten days preceding the Lent and May Bumps and the week preceding the University Fours Races, no boat may spin between the Little Bridge and Peters Posts except at its own risk. Why is it there? It's a specific reminder that there will be many crews doing head pieces in this final week and as such, spinning on corners, spinning in misty patches, spinning and impeding oncoming crews etc would be an exceptionally silly and dangerous thing to do and will be clamped down upon, since it is our job to keep this whole shebang running smoothly with minimal incident. First, the perennial noise problem. Official complaint received by the Conservators at 0700hrs this morning about loud cox boxes being used at Chesterton (new TTs boatyard). I am checking the Marshals reports to see who this was but please all remember that noise should be kept to a minimum at this section of the river. I have better things to do with my time than spend it dealing with complaints that this rule has been ignored (again!). Secondly, you are all aware that bung starts can only be practised outside the boathouses on Monday and Tuesday of next week (although there is nothing to stop you taking a bung downstream and practising in the loch between now and then). It is obviously important that crews know what to do to start a bumps race - but this does not mean that you can simply hold up everyone else on the river because you have decided to do a series of them and ignore the build up of traffic behind you, especially on the reach. The same applies to rowing with less than all VIII on Long reach. So, for the rest of this week, could you please make sure that everyone knows that: 1. Between the P & E and the Motorway Bridge you must row continuously, with full crew, unless it is unsafe to do so or if you are doing a standing start. 2. If you are doing a start (or a series of starts), you can only do so if this will not impede other crews. Let people come by if you're working on your start technique, rather than going through the whole thing while an jam develops behind you and people get cross. (And then e-mail me to tell me they're cross!!) In my experience, starts are best done at the Railway Bridge, followed by a good bit of work going down the reach, and at the Motoroway Bridge, doing the same through Long reach, on the way upstream. It is sometimes possible to get a cheeky one in at the Plough, traffic permitting... 3. Spinning at Ditton is NOT advisable this week. Not only do you run the risk of being sliced through if a crew is racing down the Plough and round Ditton, but it also adds to the general congestion on the Reach. Three simple things which, if we all adhere to them, might just help everyone prepare for next week more effectively, keep people calm and sweet, and keep my inbox free of complaints. Message-ID: can I plead once more for your cooperation and support. I have received several official complaints today about excessive cox box use a Chesterton, noise at the Plough and noise at Grassy. The result is that one person as contacted the Police and the County Council for advice and has been told that if it persists, they would have grounds to lodge a formal complaint against the University and the Conservators are asking for a meeting to discuss the situation as one complainant who contacted them about issues at Chesterton has video footage to back up his complaint. We are, as you know, discussing how to restrict the number of crews on the river in the early morning. At this rate the discussion will be academic as we could all be safely tucked up in bed having been banned from using the river before 8am. PLEASE take this seriously and be as quiet as church mice above the bridge before 7.30am, and around the Plough and Grassy until at least that time on your earlies over the rest of this term. Cox boxes should only be used to give necessary, minimal instructions and megaphones are best left in the BH. In addition, coaches swearing like troopers is a VERY bad idea - especially if members of the public could be led to think they are being sworn at. And no, this is not all from the lady at Grassy corner. It is a year or so since we've come this close to trouble over the noise issue, but we are close to the wire today and I have no idea what to do about it if CUCBC's clubs will not cooperate... Take it home with you or find a bin...it really doesn't look good for the University as a whole and it's not a nice environment in which to row. 3) It should be remembered that the towpath is a public right of way, not a path made by us for our rowing convenience. If someone wants to cycle down the wrong way against the flow of bankparties, then they are at liberty to do so. Admittedly we do advise them not to and to wait for the division, and indeed many of the townsfolk have lived here for many years and will take an alternative route to avoid the issue altogether. Regardless of this, it is absolutely unacceptable to abuse someone verbally (and physically...) for doing something they are perfectly entitled to do. Instead, perhaps you could politely apologise - whether you are right or wrong...just be a big man/woman and smooth it over - then explain the times of the divisions and that it might be best to take an alternative route or time. If they insist on taking it further, then just cycle off and don't get involved any further. Fortunately the wind has died down, the sun is shining (ish) and it will hopefully be a seamless day! Conditions were not ideal but everyone coped well. Be warned that the forecast for tomorrow is equally windy - though, at the moment, the prediction is it will be dry, sunny and windy rather than windy, wet and miserable like today. Wind is to be WNW, 21mph gusting to 39mph around 1200hrs, dropping during the afternoon. Possible that W1 and M1 will have the best conditions of the day. We will try very hard to keep cruisers and narrow boats of the course today - sorry for the delay, M3. Finally, please note earlier start time. M4 start is 1240hrs. See you tomorrow.
