At Fen Drayton this morning a birdwatcher reported that there was a Mute Swan by the guided busway, unable to move and with blood on the breast.
He assumed it had been struck by a bus and reported it to RSPCA. They have just contacted him to say that the bird possibly had bird flu - bloody discharge from the mouth, swollen head but no obvious signs of an impact injury. The bird has been put down
and Defra will analyse it to see if it has bird flu. </span></p>

<div class=""><p class=""><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Segoe UI",sans-serif" class="">The Fen Drayton bird sparks a warning but it's more likely that Defra has already tested suspects from the Fens and found them positive. Some of our local Mute Swans sometimes
occupy the same habitat as the wild swans that have migrated in for the winter (they can be carriers), and ducks are whizzing about all the time. I hope our swans will remain healthy. Bird flu was confirmed in other parts of the country in November in wild
and domestic birds and the really nasty H5N8 strain is involved in at least two cases. </span></p>
