The situation is unlikely to be resolved by Michaelmas so especially with novice coxes be extra mindful there may be barges more central than you expect coming round corners. Attachment map shows the zones with ongoing problematic/un-navigable elements of the river for my boats as of this weekend just passed. Three visiting powered boats over the weekend got marooned due to weed round their props and one over heated due to clogged water filters Apologies in advance if the rowing community encounter any of my vessels mid-stream - but to avoid costly (repeated) damage we are having to take some very unusual positioning on the river. Be wary of any stationary floating weed as it has likely been snagged on the dense weed beneath. Several crews have been seen heading back to the boathouses with weed wrapped around their oars. I have raised this with CamCon again, but still not had any kind of response as to their plans to get ahead of the curve and finish off this years weed cutting programme - nothing in the online diary either. Please cascaded to all clubs as appropriate (crews, coxes/coaches). If the rowing community have issues with the state of the river please raise your concerns direct with CamCon, as it appears mine is a lone voice and no action is taken. The more noise there is about this, the more likely action will be taken. Maybe they are hoping that the thrashing of blades on the river will finish the job off for them ! If you have been wondering when your club will need to supply Early Morning Marshals (EMMs) this year; wonder no more? an updated rota for Michaelmas can now be found at cucbc.org/marshals . EMMs help us keep the river a safe place to row, and so it is your responsibility to ensure that someone competent (a senior member of your club, ideally with experience rowing / coxing in the colder darker mornings of Michaelmas or Lent) is in place by lighting down on your assigned mornings. Clubs that fail to fulfil EMM slots will be issued with fines. Detailed instructions on what is required of EMMs can be found at cucbc.org/marshals/instructions . Entries for this year?s Uni IVs races are now open on the CUCBC website and will remain open until midday on Friday 13th Oct 2023. Uni IVs is the first CUCBC race of the year and a great way to kick start your college?s campaign, Mitchell Cup points and CUCBC metals are at stake! Racing will take place in the afternoons of Monday 23rd October to Friday 27th October starting around 2:30pm. Depending on entries, there may not be racing every day. For those unfamiliar with Uni IVs, it runs as a timed competition for IVs along a 2km course from just downstream of the A14 bridge to just downstream of the railway bridge. Two crews race at the same time, starting 120m apart, chasing each other up the river to their respective finish posts, also 120m apart. Overtaking is permitted on the long reach only. The faster of the two crews progresses onto the next heat. Further information regarding the regulations of Uni IVs, including eligibility and divisional information can be found here. The division for coxless IVs may not run if we do not get sufficient entries. As a reminder, Rule 14a: ?Coxless IVs and quadruple sculls require a banksteerer at all times, inside and outside Full Term? Lastly, any club which enters the Uni IVs regatta will be required to supply marshals to help with the running of the event. Your marshalling slots may not be on the same day your club is racing. The marshalling timetable will be published once entries close. Marshals are compulsory and essential to the safe running of the races; any club which fails to provide their allocated marshal(s) may be disqualified from the event. If you have any questions, please drop us an email at committee at cucbc.org. This is always the best way to reach us, rather than emailing specific committee members.
