Just a gentle reminder that all Clubs need to have up-to-date insurance information on their Club page on the CUCBC website by the end of week 4 (ie by 1 November) - if you wish to row on the Cam. This is information you should be able to obtain from your Senior Treasurer. NB: If it is not updated by 1 November, from 2 November you will be barred from rowing on the Cam until your insurance information is updated and reviewed by CUCBC. Clare Hall, Corpus Christi, Downing, First and Third, Homerton, King's, Lucy Cavendish, Newnham, St. Edmund's and Trinity Hall - you're all up-to-date already so good to go. Very best, David From: David O'Loughlin Date: Friday, 29 September 2023 at 09:49 To: committee at cucbc.org , 'CUCBC Captains' Subject: Uni IVs - Entries Opening Soon Dear all, Our list is still playing up, so apologies if you've received this twice. Entries for this year's Uni IVs races are now open on the CUCBC website and will remain open until midday on Friday 13th Oct 2023. Uni IVs is the first CUCBC race of the year and a great way to kick start your college's campaign, Mitchell Cup points and CUCBC metals are at stake! Racing will take place in the afternoons of Monday 23rd October to Friday 27th October starting around 2:30pm. Depending on entries, there may not be racing every day. For those unfamiliar with Uni IVs, it runs as a timed competition for IVs along a 2km course from just downstream of the A14 bridge to just downstream of the railway bridge. Two crews race at the same time, starting 120m apart, chasing each other up the river to their respective finish posts, also 120m apart. Overtaking is permitted on the long reach only. The faster of the two crews progresses onto the next heat. Further information regarding the regulations of Uni IVs, including eligibility and divisional information can be found here. The division for coxless IVs may not run if we do not get sufficient entries. As a reminder, Rule 14a: "Coxless IVs and quadruple sculls require a banksteerer at all times, inside and outside Full Term" Lastly, any club which enters the Uni IVs regatta will be required to supply marshals to help with the running of the event. Your marshalling slots may not be on the same day your club is racing. The marshalling timetable will be published once entries close. Marshals are compulsory and essential to the safe running of the races; any club which fails to provide their allocated marshal(s) may be disqualified from the event. If you have any questions, please drop us an email at committee at cucbc.org. This is always the best way to reach us, rather than emailing specific committee members. However, the excessive noise prior to 07:30 was unacceptable. Captains, it is imperative that you impress these crucial regulations on *all* rowers, coxes, and coaches. 32. All crews must ensure that they *do not create unnecessary noise anywhere on the river before 7.30am*. 33. In particular, loud hailers may not be used anywhere on the towpath, and the use of cox-boxes, and coaching from the bank should be kept to a minimum before 7.30am. *Coaching from the bank above the railway bridge is not permitted at all before this time. *CUCBC may stop coaches from accompanying crews from the boathouses to the Penny Ferry for breaching this rule. There should be no reason whatsoever for coaches to communicate with their crews before 07:30 above the Railway Bridge. If absolutely necessary for safety, these crews should not be on the water before 07:30. After 07:30 above the Railway Bridge, coaching should still be kept to a minimum. Cox-boxes must be set at the minimum safe volume at all times before 07:30. Coxes should limit their commands, and comments on rowing are unnecessary. Rowers, you are expected to maintain silence. The minimisation of noise also applies when you are at your boathouses warming up or taking boats out. Keep your balcony doors closed if you are making noise inside, and do not engage in loud conversations on the hard. Just because you have chosen to start your day at 6am does not mean you should subject all the houseboat residents to the same early wake-up call. Let me be clear: this noise issue poses a significant existential threat to College rowing. We do not want a byelaw banning rowing on the river before 07:30. Failure to keep the noise levels down could lead to this drastic measure becoming a reality. This is not a mere suggestion; it is a directive that must be followed without question. EMMs are urged not to hesitate reporting crews breaching these regulations. Sincerely, Luke -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There are an increasing number of incidents being mentioned to members of CUCBC informally. These include reckless steering, near misses and capsizes. Where a formal report is received by CUCBC by email to committee at cucbc.org we will address it, but we need to remind you all that you have a responsibility as part of your British Rowing registration to report any incident or concern, whether or not damage, injury or a health issue has occurred, via their online portal: https://incidentreporting.britishrowing.org/. You can do this as a Club, Individual, Event Organiser, or 3rd Party who needs to report an incident or concern. Your club must be keeping records of incident reports. This includes near misses, scrapes, and any "routine" damage. This is especially important when you have caused damage to another boat - or when you could have caused unseen damage, such as beneath the waterline of a houseboat. Further information, guidance and templates can be found at https://www.britishrowing.org/knowledge/safety/. We have also had feedback from members of the town rowing and residential communities that there have been several negative interactions with college crews, particularly concerning damage to houseboats and poor decision making when manoeuvring around other watercraft. These must be recorded in your club's incident reports. We have a section concerning collisions with other watercraft as part of our handbook: https://www.cucbc.org/handbook/coxes_coaches/collision, which includes a procedure for how to properly push off a moored boat, which should be shared with all coxes and lower boat captains. Repairs to houseboats and other moored craft can be very expensive for residents. While accidents happen, we all share the river, and CUCBC will not tolerate bad behaviour on either the river itself or on the towpath, either by crews, coaches or supporters. We hope that good sense will prevail in this respect, but if not, we will apply increasingly severe penalties to individuals or clubs that offend. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns. CUCBC Senior and Executive Committees -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
