Please take note that the boating time on Sunday 12th Feb will effectively be 13:00 (that is when Pete expects the last paddlers to be upstream of the boathouses). There aren?t many canoe races on the Cam, but we benefit hugely from canoeists and kayakers cooperating with the many rowing races throughout the year, so a few hours delay to boating is well worth it! Best, Felix ???????????????? Hi everyone! Firstly, I hope the start of this term has treated you well. Please see below the sign up sheet for the upcoming Women's Dev Squad sessions for this term! The overall aim of Dev Squad is to provide an introduction of what it is like to train with CUBC. To start with these sessions will remain technique based, to introduce you to the CUBC Women's technical rowing model. All are welcome so please feel free to share the link with anyone else who you think may be interested in attending these sessions. This term the sign up sheet will be updated weekly (each Friday) so you will not be able to sign up more than a week in advance to a session. You can come every week, or just as many as you like. But please only sign up for a maximum of one session per week. If the sessions are full or these times don't work for you but you are interested in Dev Squad please do get in contact with me via email (autumn at cubc.org.uk ). I look forward to seeing you there! This is only the third set of Bumps since the pandemic saw the races cancelled, so we still require a large proportion of those around with two more sets of Bumps under their belts to help out and umpire, so please do encourage members of your Clubs to sign up - especially if they're not rowing in the top four divisions. *Some carrots:* - Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course - As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a *free dinner* (including drinks) at a pub the week after Bumps. - Each Club will have a certain allocation of marshalling to ensure the safe and smooth running of the Bumps. Everyone who volunteers for umpiring by noon on Saturday 25 February will count towards this marshal allocation. Trust me: umpiring is a lot more fun than marshalling. You don't need to have umpired before to sign up. There will be a briefing on the evening of Sunday 5 March for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have *rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps (Lents, Mays, or Towns)* before so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave *two divisions clear before* your race and *one after* to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: https://www.cucbc.org/lents/times The umpires briefing will be in the early evening of Sunday 5 March - 18:20 in Girton/Online (hybrid) - and last about 25 minutes, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. Do apologise if you make contact. - Use the rubber/rope fenders to push off whenever needed and possible, instead of risking scratching paintwork or hitting below the water line. - Do not be afraid to apologise and identify yourself in the case of an incident. This is what insurance policies exist for. - Experience of coaches is not a reason to avoid apologising for incidents involving other crews or river users. - Speed/ perceived significance of a crew is never a reason to queue jump a blind corner. Message-ID: Dear Captains, This is a reminder that all subs in all boats for any Bumps race (including and especially for the GoR) must be approved by the CUCBC Exec Committee. It's much easier if you get planned subs approved now, so we only have to deal with injury/illness subs during Bumps. A sub is anyone who isn't in the crew listed on the CUCBC website (or, in the case of last minute changes, someone who won't have trained much with the crew this term). If you're just swapping people between crews permanently (e.g. you've discovered a third boat rower makes your second boat go faster), you can do this on the CUCBC website up until the Getting On Race without requesting permission explicitly from us. In general, subs should meet the following requirements (I've added the rules inspiring this info to an appendix below): Subs should have been eligible to row in the boat they are subbing into, had they been entered as a member of the crew (i.e. bona fide student at that college, not rowing in another boat, no blues or first Mays colours below third boat/third division, whichever is lower) Subbing for someone who cannot make the races for a reason which is acceptable depending on the division they are competing in (see rule 25 below), or for someone who cannot make the race due to accident/illness/family emergency (which is the only case we'll accept a sub request with less than 24 hours notice). Subs may not come from a higher boat, without exception (i.e. any sub which would give an unfair advantage to the crew they're subbing into, e.g. M1 to M2 or W3 to W4, even for the GoR, is expressly forbidden). Subs must not have been training with a town club outside college hours more than four times. (except for coxes.) If you submit requests for subs in the following format (hat tip to Sidney for this example), we'll be able to approve them very quickly in most cases: Sub 1 seat number, FIRSTNAME SURNAME Race Saturday division 4 Boat Sidney W1 Reason e.g. [injured shoulder | stomach bug | details of compulsory academic commitment] Substitute FIRSTNAME SURNAME - confirmation of student status at relevant college, confirmation not rowed in any other crew in this set of Bumps, confirmation not rowed with a town club this term, brief description of rowing history (especially relevant for coxing subs, who will also need to attend the coxes briefing and be competent enough to control the crew they're subbing into). Please ensure your requests are sent to BOTH committee at cucbc.org AND seniorcommittee at cucbc.org, and where possible group your requests into as few emails as possible. Please also ensure that you reply all to follow up enquiries. If need be, feel free to plead your case for why an exception should be made for your particular sub request, but we'll just fall back on the precedent set by previous decisions (that is why the Senior Committee exist after all). Please forward this email onto any LBCs / VCs / crew captains who might be making substitution requests. Many thanks, Lee CUCBC Exec. Appendix Rule 5 of 'Rules for Racing - General': a. That the crew which competes in the first heat of a CUCBC event (including the Getting on Race) be considered the official crew for the duration of that event. No change in the official crew shall be allowed, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which will usually be given only in exceptional circumstances such as accident or illness, or subject to Rule 25 in the case of the Lent and May races. b. That before the first heat, approval may be sought from the Executive Committee for a substitute in the first heat. If this is granted, the official crew should be provided in writing by the club concerned to the Executive Committee, and is expected to be the crew which has trained together that term. The official crew must be provided in advance of the first heat. c. That substitution of rowers from crews in a higher position on the River to those in either a lower position or those competing in the Getting on Race shall not be permitted. Rule 21 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' a That no person who has gained first Lent or May Colours or a Trial Cap may row or steer below the third division of the CUCBC Lent or May Races or below his/her College third crew, whichever is the lower, without the permission of the Hon. Secretaries. This shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That no person who has rowed in, steered or been a reserve for any of the CUBC, CUWBC or CULRC crews may row below his/her College third May Boat without the permission of the Hon. Secretaries, which shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. c That anyone infringing 21.a and/or 21.b be forbidden to row or steer in any crew for the remainder of the Races. Rule 22 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' a That, with the exception of the sandwich boats, no-one may row or steer in more than one division in one day, and that no-one who has rowed in a particular crew in the races may then row in another crew, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness. b That anyone may row in one division and steer in another on the same day. c This rule shall span both the Men?s and Women?s races, such that it is not permitted to row twice (once in the Men?s races and once in the Women?s races) or cox twice (once in the Men?s races and once in the Women?s races) in one day, notwithstanding sandwich boats as exempted in rule 22.a. Rule 25 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' Substitutes must be deemed capable by the Executive Committee of competing safely in the division they will be subbing into, and all substitutes must be eligible competitors for the crew they will be subbing into. Permission for substitution shall only be given in the exceptional circumstances allowed by Rule 5 and: a. to crews in the first or second division in the case of compulsory and immovable academic commitments; b. to crews in the third division in the case of academic commitments, or other sporting commitments; c. to crews in lower divisions for those reasons or any other reason, d. provided permission for any eligible substitute is sought at least 24 hours before racing. e. For the purposes of substitution eligibility, a crew?s division shall be the division it starts the races in. In the case of a crew competing in the Getting-On Race, Rule 25.c. shall apply. Rule 28 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' That no-one who has rowed or steered in a successful boat in the Getting-On Race row or steer respectively in a higher boat during the races which follow, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness of someone in a higher boat. Minimal noise before 0730 above the railway bridge - no coaching from the bank nor coxes seat, and most definitely no shouting from the bank. (unless required for safety reasons.) If you are doing reach runs you must cease excessive noise (ie stop coaching and turn down loud coxboxes) when upstream of the Railway Bridge. Several complaints have now come through, and crews identifiable will be fined. Please notify your coaches of this as well, as the crew will be fined if a loud coach is present with them. Note that persistent complaints risks restrictions being placed on college rowing from the council/Cam Conservators, which does no-one favours. Please be mindful of the other river users and residents. Regards. Lee On behalf of The CUCBC committees. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Apologies to everyone else. Ro Thompson has agreed to run a briefing for any interested coxes on the 1st of March (next Wednesday) at 7:30pm. The briefing will be online and a link circulated closer to the time. Racing on the Tideway is not like the Cam - the stream makes positioning of your shell much more important when racing, and marshalling is considerably more complex (though no less chaotic...) I can thoroughly recommend this talk to anyone, whether they've raced on the Tideway before or not. Ro has been coxing for nearly 20 years, including three years training on the Tideway with Vesta Rowing Club based in Putney. She has four Tideway pennants, three from WeHORR and one from HORR. Whilst as Vesta she coxed the top womens crew to 3rd and 4th place in WeHORR and raced twice in the elite womens 8s event at Henley Royal Regatta. So she is very well placed to offer guidance on handling racing on the Thames. I will absolutely be attending, and I'd strongly urge any college coxes planning to race this year to come along too. Best wishes, Isabel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please note: - We ask that you complete and return one form per club (not one per crews, or for your women and men separately). - Only outings in VIIIs count, not IVs or small boats. - No need to print and physically sign, just fill in and return electronically. There's no strict requirement that every member of a crew has to have done all 12 sessions, but we expect every qualifying outing to be recognisable as the crew it relates to. Having a pair of M3 rowers subbing into your M2 does not mean it counts as an M3 outing! We would expect all coxes to have done almost all sessions, but for any cox falling under 12 outings with their crew, we will happy to deal with on a case by case basis depending on the circumstances. Any questions or problems please email the committee (committee at cucbc.org ). Best wishes, Luke -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In order to run the races safely, we need to have more sign-ups so please do ask experienced members of your Clubs to sign up if they haven't already, in particular if they're not competing in the M1/W1 divisions. There will be a sign-in sheet sometime during each briefing. (*unless proxies arranged for senior coxes only as per rule 24: http://www.cucbc.org/handbook/racing/bumps) *River behaviour* - Reminder to all crews that requesting to 'come by' is both polite and a safety call - crews being overtaken may not be aware that you are behind them / crews in front may have a different perspective on whether you're clear. - Reminder to coxes/coaches to be especially cautious and proactive with oncoming coxless boats: there have been several reports recently of ... let's call it impromptu mid-river greetings. - Crews coming upstream have right of way, and river safety should be of paramount concern even if that means pausing your outing temporarily. - Early morning noise: no coaching upstream of the railway bridge before 07.30 includes upstream as well as downstream. Coxes are encouraged to keep comments limited around houseboats. *How not to get an insurance claim from / sued by / understandably shouted at by a houseboat owner* Reminders: - coxes should at all times be aware to stay clear of houseboats. - push off the fenders/ tyres/ rubber above waterline if contact is made - apologise. Especially if any damage. If significant, give club contact details: insurance is there for a reason. - hopefully by now everyone on the river should know how to safely manoeuvre away from houseboats when in close proximity but check in with your novice coxes in particular, please. (when viable, backing away first is better than pulling a blade in to paddle on, etc) Here's to an exciting couple of weeks!
