Please try to make these crews as accurate as you can, but you can update your crew members after the deadline if need be (we just need to know crew numbers early so we can plan accordingly). Once entries have closed, Dr Dan Wilkins (CUCBC Senior Treasurer) will issue your CUCBC bills, which will include a charge of ?45 per crew, plus any outstanding charges against your club. Your bill will include payment details. Payment will be due by 21st February, so please be prepared to organise payment promptly once you receive your bill. Someone techhy is investigating what's going on, and we thought we had fixed it late last night- evidently not. An archive of the emails that we and others have tried to send to captains can be found here: http://lists.cucbc.org/pipermail/captains_lists.cucbc.org/ Until we fix the issue, please can you copy/paste the recipients from this email if you need to contact captains- it should reach everyone; apologies for the faff, especially those working hard to organise races this term. *Clarification of 15 minute rule:* Thanks for the email enquiries- to clarify the 15 minute rule is for first Eights only (i.e. VIII boats, not IV boats with first crew in it). The rationale of the 15 minute rule in Lent term is to get first eights away as quickly as possible. Whilst there will be variation in speeds of first VIIIs, we restrict the rule because allowing first crew IVs (or smaller boats) would cause a markedly larger variation in speeds. This compromises the purpose of the 15 minute rule, and risks forcing us to use further measures if traffic doesn't improve. To clarify, only first VIIIs are allowed out in the first 15 minutes of lighting down; any ineligible boats caught/reported out in the first 15 minutes (i.e. second boats, smaller boats) will be fined. *Lent Bumps Entries Open:* Please see below a message from Conor- Dear all, Entries for Lent Bumps 2022 are now open on the CUCBC website - you will need your CUCBC website captain login to access the entry form. A number of athletes have already attended women's dev squad sessions - if you require more infor, please contact Autumn (autumn @ cubc.org.uk) or me. Dear all, I hope you all had a good Christmas and are now settled back into your university routine, we?re are again planning land sessions at Goldie through the Lent term, after the introductory sessions last term where the foundation of our technical model was laid I hope you have had a chance to work on these areas in your college programs and I am looking forward to seeing the progress. We want to use this term to build in some effective training and to get an idea of where your current level lies. To that end weekly sessions will alternate between a steady state UT2 ergo and a hard/test session the following week. We will make sure that as you build into bumps with your colleges the hard session will be pulled- this will allow you to do all your intensity as prep work in the boat. I would ask that those of you who have heart rate monitors bring them to the sessions, this will allow us to provide guidance on your training zones. Every UK university and college are invited to enter teams at www.TheBRITChallenge.org.uk and encourage as many students and staff as possible to take part, and complete 2,022 miles as teams. There are many ways to take part in the BRIT Challenge, including rowing, adaptive rowing, swimming, cycling, walking jogging and running. We have almost 200 BRIT Ambassadors (Olympians, Paralympians, Elite Athletes, Adventurers and Explorers) who are championing the annual BRIT Challenge, encouraging participation and helping to destigmatise mental health. Four of our BRIT Ambassadors graduated from Cambridge and are keen to support and encourage students and staff who enter teams including; * Dr Cath Bishop * Henry Fieldman * Tom Ransley MBE * Mellisa Wilson This year we are inviting university and college teams to choose a second charity to raise funds for, alongside BRIT, to support local, regional and national charities. We have special relationships with the British Olympic Association, British Paralympic Association and British Rowing. We have also developed a special relationship with Love Rowing. I would be sincerely grateful if you would consider entering teams in the BRIT Challenge this year, asking your rowing squads to add their distance to your 2,022 mile targets and act as catalysts to encourage fellow students and staff at your colleges to take part; I very much hope that this is an opportunity to assist with improving and supporting student and staff mental health and fitness throughout every college campus. Many Vice-Chancellors (and hopefully college Wardens, Deans and Masters) are planning on completing the first mile with their SU (JCR/MCR) Presidents which is a great way of engaging students and staff ? perhaps there is scope to invite them to your Boat Clubs and get them on the water with your rowers. There is also the option of one united University of Cambridge team taking part with students and staff from every college and Boat Club adding their miles to a University of Cambridge 2,022 mile BRIT Challenge target. Colleges at the University of Oxford are taking part and it would be tremendous if you would encourage participation. I have attached a BRIT Challenge How To Take Part PDF and would be very happy to join a Teams Call once you have a BRIT Challenge Coordination Group in place; I can share some successful ways other universities and colleges have taken on previous BRIT Challenges and hopefully enthuse and inspire your students and staff to take part. As the mental health challenges faced by young adults and students continues to increase, which have been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, improving young adult mental health and fitness is vitally important. BRIT continues to deliver our annual feelgood February fundraiser, the next being an inclusive team 2,022 mile challenge, with three aims; * Support student mental health, fitness & wellbeing and reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness * Deliver inspiration to young adults, and destigmatise mental health, with the support of BRIT Ambassadors * Raise vital funds for local, regional and national charities Registration is now open for the BRIT Challenge, taking place between 1st February and 3rd March 2022 (University Mental Health Day). Every UK university, college, specialist college and Students? Union are urged to embrace the Challenge, enter teams and invite their students and staff to participate. Many charities have felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a collaborative charity, BRIT are inviting every university and college team taking part in the BRIT Challenge to choose a second charity to raise funds for, alongside BRIT, to support local, regional and national charities. Over the past two years, almost 180 university and college teams have taken on BRIT Challenges. Olympians, Paralympians, Sports Personalities, Adventurers and Explorers continue to join the BRIT Ambassador family and over 150 have joined BRIT this year to support young adult mental health. BRIT Ambassadors promote the BRIT Challenge at a university and/or college of their choice, encourage student participation, share their lived experience to destigmatise mental health and champion equality, diversity and inclusion. Thank you to all our BRIT Ambassadors and the sport and education governing bodies and charities who we have built partnerships and special relationships with. We?re going to have to call on a large proportion of the people associated with college rowing who have experience of two or more sets of Bumps to get enough Umpires to allow us to run the Lents. In particular, people who have sufficient experience and who won?t be competing in the top four divisions will be invaluable - if that is you, please consider signing up! Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a free dinner (including drinks) at a pub the week after Bumps (fingers crossed - we need to confirm this will be possible Covid wise, but I?m optimistic). Furthermore, everyone who volunteers for umpiring by Sunday 20th February will count towards their college's marshal allocation (if you sign up after Wednesday 23rd February, please drop me an email, or I may miss you off the rota!). You don't need to have umpired before to sign up. There will be a briefing for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps (Lents, Mays, or Towns) before so that you understand how the races work. Unfortunately, given the very unique nature of Bumps, June Eights Regatta experience is not sufficient. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave two divisions clear before your race and one after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: https://www.cucbc.org/lents/times The umpires briefing will be in the early evening of Sunday 27th February - exact time TBC. It'll last about thirty-forty minutes, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. You can sign up here: http://www.cucbc.org/lents/umpires/signup If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at conor at cucbc.org Many thanks, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Allocations are based on the number of crews you entered and the number of umpires signed up from your club. Those filling marshal slots should have ideally competed in at least one set of Bumps before, although anyone who knows their way along the towpath and who can pull in a boat without breaking off its bowball should be competent enough. Failure to provide marshals will result in (escalating) fines, and in the worst case result in us being unable to run races. If your club cannot fill a particular marshal slot, you may swap it with another college, but you must obtain their agreement and then email committee at cucbc.org (CCing the other club) to inform us of the swap. Please note: - One form per club - not one per crew, or for your men and women separately. - Only outings in VIIIs count, not IVs or small boats. - No need to print and physically sign, just fill in and return electronically. - Please email the document back, don't send me a link to an online location. All forms must be returned by this Sunday 23:59, so we have time to process these. There's no strict requirement that every member of a crew has to have done all 12 sessions, but we expect every qualifying outing to be recognisable as the crew it relates to. Having a pair of M3 rowers subbing into your M2 does not mean it counts as an M3 outing! We would expect all coxes to have done almost all sessions, but for any cox falling under 12 outings with their crew, we will happy to deal with on a case by case basis depending on the circumstances. Any questions or problems please *email the committee *(committee at cucbc.org) and *not me directly.* A note also that on Sunday, there will be a pre-bumps captain's meeting at 1800-1830, Umpire's briefing at 1830-1915 and the coxes' briefing at 1915-2015 (which attendance will be taken). Due to workload I can't produce formal minutes, but next best thing here's a brief notes from the meeting- apologies for the brevity. --- *CUCBC committee in attendance: * Luke Pattison (Exec), Kate Shipley (Exec), Tom Grimble (Senior), Limeng Zhu (Exec), assumed all captains from all clubs. *Notes- Bumps:* -Everyone is very excited to do some bumps! But paramount is that it is in a safe manner and that it runs smoothly. -Division times are posted on the website, please do check these along with start orders Finishes are as described on the website: http://www.cucbc.org/handbook/racing/bumps *-Bank parties: maximum three per crew.* -There to be no handheld cameras, but those firmly mounted to bike/head are fine -All appeals need to be raised within 30 minutes of a bumps decision, after this the result stands. -No video evidence is admissible, nor will harassment/intimidation/foul language be tolerated during the appeals process. -Mudguards and waterproofs are a must given the current forecast. *Notes- Committee positions* -We are looking for an Honorary Secretary (to organise CUCBC meetings) and a number of Events Secretaries (to help run Uni IVs/SBR/Bumps). These are very fulfilling, voluntary roles very much suited for people with experience on the cam, who want to make Cambridge rowing better and who have skills in excel and keeping on top of emails/organisation. -Please make enquiries to committee at cucbc.org or to any committee member privately. The tradition of Bumps and university college rowing can only continue if people step up to make sure the tradition continues. *Notes- AOB/Q&A:* Pembroke and Queens'- clarifying M4/W4 split. M4 will go off first (i.e. positions 1-9) then W4 (i.e. positions 10-18). This has been the longstanding tradition as M1 finishes last in Lents. Catz - queried rules regarding subs, was rejected sub request for rower due to int'l bagpipe compeition so had to be moved down a division. Proposal to amend to be brought to start of easter term's captain's meeting if wished. LMBC - queried whether Proposal E from the last meeting would be voted upon again. No agenda points were received to ask for another vote, nor did anyone raise they wanted to vote again this time around. The proposal stands defeated from the last meeting. --- A final note to do consider enquiring regarding CUCBC Hon.Sec and Event's secretary roles. The current workload for the current members are unsustainable without the Hon Sec and Events Sec roles being filled and have been seen by the delays in the GoR and Bumps umpiring rotas, and delays in email replies.
