Apologies for the short notice, it is the first time that a couple of the Exec committee are free and able to run this session. For clarity, this is aimed at novice coxes, though novice LBCs are more than welcome to attend also. Please be on the lookout for a joining link via email and please circulate to your novice coxes and LBCs. *What is this meeting*? A basic introduction and further information for novice coxes and LBCs to help support and clarify coxing points and help LBCs in supporting novice coxes during their development. It is not intended for senior coxes or senior coaches. *Lights*: A further reminder that lights need to be on the boats (not on the back of people's heads), bright enough (please check your batteries!), and affixed on the bow and stern not on the riggers. Whenever there is poor visibility, you should be using lights. You definitely should use them where there is fog. There have been complaints by other river members regarding this. Especially when there is fog, lights are essential to ensure other river users know you are there, so that there are no incidents or injuries. *EMMs:* The quality of EMMs provided has been variable with some not turning up and several who do not seem to have sufficient competency. This is also a blanket reminder for any EMMs this week who have not submitted their reports yet, as these will be reviewed. Please ensure you send a competent (i.e. experienced senior) member of your club to the EMM duty, and ensure they read the rules and instructions. This is of benefit for your other captains and for us to objectively assess what is happening on the river in regards to safety and numbers. *Uni IVs*: We are not doing row-throughs for crews, however the river control does not include the P&E so you can spin any crews there if you wish. Please be respectful of any IVs who are cutting it fine rowing down for marshalling. *Traffic:* We know the river is getting busier, we are assessing traffic and will introduce measures once numbers are persistently increased to similar numbers when rules were introduced in MT 2017/18/19. I'm getting in touch as Vice President of Cambridge Pink Week 2022, a student-run charitable organisation which raises money and awareness for breast cancer charities and their messages. Pink Week will run from 7th-13th February and, given the disruption to fundraising caused by the pandemic and the isolation many people affected by breast cancer have dealt with because of it, our work is more important than ever. We've raised over ?135,000 since 2014 and we'd love your help to make 2022 our biggest year yet! One of the initiatives we are running this year is #TurnCamPink, which involves everything from lighting up iconic Cambridge buildings to turning plodges pink and serving pink drinks and food in college bars, to help bring the student and city populations together and spread our message of education, support and awareness. We would therefore like to ask if you would be interested in helping us turn the river Cam pink by asking your crews to wear pink/decorate pink in some way during Pink Week? Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to know more. We're so excited to work with you on this and would love to hear your thoughts! Between Lighting Down and 08:30hrs on Monday to Friday each college club will only be permitted to have two boats on the river at any one time. This rule applies to IVs and VIIIs but not to singles, pairs or tub pairs. Further details on this rule and penalties can be found on the CUCBC website: www.cucbc.org/handbook/earlies www.cucbc.org/handbook/rules/restrictions[Rule 8] Hopefully this will be sufficient notice for all clubs so that you can plan your outings around this accordingly. Further, we have had several more complaints against several college crews for dangerous and reckless behaviour of boats on the river and disregard to navigation rules, resulting in crashes, damage, capsize and injury. For the sake of your own crew's safety, the safety of others and in consideration of other river users (which includes other college crews) this must stop. You must follow navigation rules, no matter how late you are running. You must have appropriate lights on when required. Novice crews must have a bank party. We will be in touch about further details in the near future. Please see the below from the Clare Boat Club committee for more information: *Clare Boat Club are sorry to announce that they are cancelling Clare Novices' Regatta tomorrow, Saturday 27th. The weather forecast is for gusting wind speeds of 34mph at 09.00 increasing to 44mph by 15.00. Racing and manoeuvering boats will be difficult for even the strongest novice crews and starting side-by-side races may become impossible. Even more concerning is that heavy rain is forecast for most of the day and that wind-chilled temperatures will be below freezing, posing a significant hypothermia risk to competitors and race officials alike.* My apologies for all who were looking forward to an exciting day of racing, and we hope to welcome you again in Lent. I would also like to thank all involved in organising the event, particularly my fellow Senior Umpire, Ike Qian, as well as members of the CBC committee. Best wishes and many thanks on behalf of all CNR organisers, Krzysztof *CNR Senior Umpire* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Seb Walker, one of our regional reps, asked me to encourage you to go along tomorrow. British Rowing has recently undergone quite a large change in leadership, and they?re perhaps more open than they have been in the past to listening to the views of clubs. I?ll also forward you another email from Seb in a moment, which outlines some details of BR?s strategy, that you might like to peruse before or after the meeting. I am sure everyone will have their own view, but I would describe our culture currently as one of command and control: we tend to take the necessarily didactic approach of our base work as a National Governing Body and carry it through to everything else we do. As such, we like to be in charge and tell people what to do, and we tend to give the impression to people that if we didn?t create something, then it?s not up to us to promote it, even if it is raising interest in the sport. What we get in response from members (who hate being told what to do) is begrudging compliance, and often a search for loopholes. > > > Cultural shift > > What I would love to see us move to, once we get past the obviously important rulebook, is a culture of the clubs and members feeling that they have autonomy, and [BR] being the facilitators - because what results from that combination is engagement. The key thing we need to achieve is that people feel that the sport is improved by our being here, rather than them feeling that they would be better off without us if only they had a choice. > > As part of that, you will I am sure note that all over every discrete strategy is a call for feedback - not just gathered in the creation or at the time of publication of our strategy, but on-going. I?d like us to give our members the feeling that they can have a continuous dialogue with us, and know where to go if they have suggestions to make or help they can offer. I would like to drastically cut the perception of distance between us and them. We are part of one family, united by a love of the sport. > > > Let?s talk > > I will stress again that this is by no means a finished product. In fact, it never will be a finished product. Even after [this consultation] the aim is to be flexible within individual strategies within the confines of a clear central vision. We need to constantly adapt and improve as opportunities arise, things change, and technology develops, getting things out quickly and then iterating to get better and better, rather than spending too long trying to create perfection first time. > > In that vein, let?s discuss openly whether we think any of this brings clarity to areas, roles, and overall strategy; what?s missing; what shouldn?t be here; what needs changing, etc. etc. etc. You will see there is a forum on the site: if you want your view to be part of a general discussion, use it - there is a section for each category (and you just log in with an email address). If you would prefer your comments to be made behind the scenes, then please either use the ?contact us? button on each page, or mail me directly. ,The feedback at britishrowing.org email address on the Contact Us button currently comes to me, so if you use that I will assume you want me to pass your comments on to the area owner. If you mail me directly, I will take the ?Chatham House Rules? approach of using your content ideas but not passing on who is behind them. > > > Final thought > > Finally, I am trying to practice what I preach: I don?t know if this will work; what I am sending you is far from where I wanted to get to with it and I?d like to be working on it for another week or more; and I?m a bit worried that you?re all going to say ?. But equally, I think it?s on the right track, and I?m getting it out because I want and need wider input to move further forward. If it fails completely, I?ve lost a couple of weeks trying, we will look at how else to do it, and the next attempt will be better for what I?ll have learned. I think Margaret Heffernan explains it brilliantly in her recent book Uncharted, which is an apt word for the territory we are in right now: ?To achieve inspiring things people often start in a place of uncertainty, filled with doubt, and yet arrive triumphant at places in life they could not see when they set out. Their successes are deeply human, derived from curiosity, imagination and not a little bravery. Individuals must be prepared to navigate the unknown at risk of failure in pursuit of the ill-defined, because the only way to know the future is to make it.? > > > Here?s the link britishrowing.org/strategy2021 > > > > > Andrew Blit > 07976 672238 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This is to allow senior crews to get an outing in before novice Fairbairns on Thursday if they so wish. If you do choose to do so, please ensure your crews are off the water in plenty of time, so as not to hinder novice crews from boating on time.
