Dear Captains,
We are starting to get enquires regarding the state of play next term
especially regarding novices and bumps, which is understandable as you, and
we are looking for clarity and certainty. This is where we are at:
---

*May Bumps:*
We are afraid we really can't confirm anything at this time, apart from the
facts that a) bumps will not clash with exams, should they go ahead and b)
we want bumps to go ahead.

Too many factors remain uncertain. No announcement regarding whether
students will come back has been made, no announcement whether the
relaxation of lockdown will proceed as their plan has been made, and no
advice regarding whether competitions in open spaces can run during this
lockdown relaxation has been made either.

We understand it is frustrating for you and people will be pressing you for
answers, it's frustrating for us also when we can't confirm dates or plans.
We all have to be a bit more reactive to events, as well as proactive. We
are aware the calibre and skill of novices this year will be lower due to
the pandemic, and this will be taken into consideration for bumps planning,
when we have enough information to formulate a plan this year.

Unfortunately due to low numbers of volunteers, a virtual lent bumps has
not been possible to organise.

*Novicing during Easter term (if restrictions allow):*
Novice crews (being any crew not capable of making it to the reach with
minimal coxing and no calls from the bank) are allowed provided the
respective college boat club's risk assessment includes the necessary
measures to mitigate the risks of less than the whole crew rowing together.
All novicing are subject to all of the normal rules which apply, i.e. not
before 7:30am on any day, always with a bank party etc. (Full rules on
CUCBC website)

*Captains meeting:*
Following some requests regarding start of term captains meeting, we would
propose to meet a week before term starts, so that we all can have a
constructive discussion as to what will happen in Easter term. (under the
proviso that the relaxation of lockdown rules continues) If any of you wish
to propose a specific date, do gather support and let us know.

*An important reminder*
Do ensure your risk assessments have been updated and college approval has
been obtained before any return to rowing on the 29th, providing outdoor
sport is allowed to return on this date.

---
Please do keep emailing us with questions and comments; it is useful for us
to hear from you directly about what is going on in the club community and
help each other to get the rowing community recovered as effectively and
safely as possible.

Kind regards,
CUCBC Exec Committee.
