The following message was just sent round the CUCBC cox mailing list. However, I'm aware that many college coxes are not signed up to it. Please pass it on to any of your members who you think might find it useful. As a brief extra note, this is aimed at people who have some coxing experience (though novices are welcome to come along too), but I'm also planning to offer a novice specific session once we have more of an idea what will be happening next term. Best wishes, Isabel ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Isabel Nimmo Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2021 at 22:45 Subject: Coxing talks - Wed 10th March To: Dear college coxes, While things are still a bit uncertain, we?re looking at the possibility of a return to coxing in the next couple of months. I?m very aware that we?ve all had very little water time over the last year, and training and development has been seriously interrupted for many of us. A couple of senior college coxes have agreed to run an informal ?coxing seminar? session on Wednesday the 10th at 7pm (UK time). A link to join will be circulated closer to the time. Callum Mantell has been coxing Emmanuel first boats for years, as well as for CULRC, Bedford Star and Cantabs. Katie Kirk coxes for Churchill (five years in first boats, most recently W1), as well as being overall captain last year and previosuly racing with CUW and Robs/Lysander. I?m ?. old. But I?ve been around for a while at Emma, Lucy Cav, City of Cambridge and Cantabs. We?re aiming to each talk on a specific topic, and then open things up to a more general discussion/Q&A. The plan is to try and give some ideas and pointers for people who have been coxing for a while, but have had a bit of an interruption to their coxing careers and who want to get back on form as quickly as possible once training becomes a thing again. Best wishes to you all, Isabel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... After some playing about with options, I've gone with GoogleMeet. I've popped the link below. It works fairly well for presentations. It's a bit less good for chatting, so if people could try and keep their microphones on mute when not talking, that would be great. But a lot of the benefit is being able to have a more free-form Q&A/chat/sharing of tips etc. So at the same time, please don't hesitate to unmute if you do want to say or ask anything! meet.google.com/jxm-hrhv-pmd Hope to see some of you there. This is where we are at: --- *May Bumps:* We are afraid we really can't confirm anything at this time, apart from the facts that a) bumps will not clash with exams, should they go ahead and b) we want bumps to go ahead. Too many factors remain uncertain. No announcement regarding whether students will come back has been made, no announcement whether the relaxation of lockdown will proceed as their plan has been made, and no advice regarding whether competitions in open spaces can run during this lockdown relaxation has been made either. We understand it is frustrating for you and people will be pressing you for answers, it's frustrating for us also when we can't confirm dates or plans. We all have to be a bit more reactive to events, as well as proactive. We are aware the calibre and skill of novices this year will be lower due to the pandemic, and this will be taken into consideration for bumps planning, when we have enough information to formulate a plan this year. Unfortunately due to low numbers of volunteers, a virtual lent bumps has not been possible to organise. *Novicing during Easter term (if restrictions allow):* Novice crews (being any crew not capable of making it to the reach with minimal coxing and no calls from the bank) are allowed provided the respective college boat club's risk assessment includes the necessary measures to mitigate the risks of less than the whole crew rowing together. All novicing are subject to all of the normal rules which apply, i.e. not before 7:30am on any day, always with a bank party etc. (Full rules on CUCBC website) *Captains meeting:* Following some requests regarding start of term captains meeting, we would propose to meet a week before term starts, so that we all can have a constructive discussion as to what will happen in Easter term. (under the proviso that the relaxation of lockdown rules continues) If any of you wish to propose a specific date, do gather support and let us know. *An important reminder* Do ensure your risk assessments have been updated and college approval has been obtained before any return to rowing on the 29th, providing outdoor sport is allowed to return on this date. --- Please do keep emailing us with questions and comments; it is useful for us to hear from you directly about what is going on in the club community and help each other to get the rowing community recovered as effectively and safely as possible. Kind regards, CUCBC Exec Committee. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please do heed their request, and pass it on to anyone who may be thinking of attending. Best wishes, Conor The Boat Race will be closed to spectators to enable the races to take place in a COVID-secure way. Gemini Boat Race 2021 asks fans to stay home and watch live on BBC. The race will be broadcast live on BBC One from 15:00-17:30 on Sunday 4th April. With many national restrictions still in place, the Boat Race will this year be a closed event on the Great Ouse at Ely in Cambridgeshire on Sunday 4th April. There will be no access to spectators, to enable one of the world?s oldest and most famous amateur competitions to return to the British sporting calendar in a COVID-secure way. The Oxford and Cambridge Men?s and Women?s crews, their coaches and The Boat Race Company, who organise the event, would like to thank all fans, and the local communities of Ely and Littleport, for their incredible support and ask them to please help make this a safe and secure event by staying home to watch it on the BBC. Following the cancellation of the 2020 race, and as the country continues to adhere to distancing measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year?s unique race will have all the excitement of the usual race format, but without spectators. Working with local stakeholders and all relevant agencies, The Boat Race Company are confident of the delivery of a COVID-secure event for the athletes who have been training hard for this race, and for fans watching the event on the BBC. Safety is of paramount importance to enable the 2021 race to go ahead in this unique format. The Boat Race Company are putting a number of measures in place, to first and foremost, ensure the safety of the local community, athletes and staff working on the event, and to stop spectators from gathering, running the risk of COVID restrictions being breached, which could see the event being postponed or cancelled. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... To the majority of you who have already updated this, many thanks- for those still outstanding this must be done before you return to the water. We will also be circulating a google form for you to complete safety audits for this academic year, please keep a lookout for these. The pre-Easter term Captains meeting will be held *virtually at 7pm, Sunday 18th April* with agenda and link sent closer to the time. CUCBC will also be holding their committee meeting on the 14th, as such if you have any agenda items, questions, comments or concerns please submit them before the 14th April so that we can provide a complete response to these, and strike the right balance between returning to rowing and keeping rowing on the Cam COVID-secure and safe.
