Dear Captains,
A reminder that entries close at 10pm tomorrow for the June Eights'
Regatta. Please ensure all entries are entered via the cucbc website with
your crew's name and CRSiD. If you have a variable crew due to exams etc.,
please fill out the competitors who will be either racing the most or
racing the Getting-on-Race. Empty crew entries may be disregarded.

A reminder that we need umpires still- the races can't all go ahead if we
don't have them.

Dear Captains,
A final reminder that JER entries close at 10pm today. Please ensure your
entry is properly filled with crew name and members' names/crsIDs otherwise
these will not be valid.

Requests for specific divisions for the GoR are available and the link is
in the previous emails.

In response to a few questions, some clarifications:
-All novice crews must be crewed with only novice rowers, which will be
defined as anyone who has not rowed before Michaelmas 2020.
-As agreed in the previous Captain's meeting, novices may race more than
once daily, only in order to sub into their senior lowest division and fill
an eight.
-Club bills will be sent out shortly after close of entries with full
details of payment instructions and deadlines- this should not prevent you
from entering.
-Likewise, GoR draws and marshalling instructions will be published after
entries close.
-Keep signing up to umpire!

We have about 120 entries at the minute, a fantastic number in such a
disrupted year; however fewer novice crews compared to senior crews
entered. Please ensure all your novice entries are in by the
deadline, these have to be done via captains onto the website. The mixed
category is present if you are having trouble fielding crews solely from
one gender.

I?m head coach for the Cantabs Senior Women?s squad and will be finishing
my PGCE course on the 18th June. Between then and the start of September
I?m going to have a lot of spare time on my hands and am looking for some
coaching related work.

I know that many of you and your athletes will not be in Cambridge during
this time, but thought that I?d email to say that, should you or your crews

A little about me:

I?ve lead the Cantabs Senior Women?s squad for the last 10 years and have
worked with junior, senior, masters and para-rowers. I?ve helped crews to
wins/medals at Henley Women?s Regatta, Women?s Eights Head, National
Schools, Nat Junior Championships, Ghent, Fours Head, Pairs Head, Scullers
Head, World Masters, Henley Masters and National Masters.

My crews have represented England at the Home International Regatta three
times. I selected and trained the Cambridge crew for British Rowing?s 2018
Power8s sprint competition. My crews have held the Town Bumps Headship
since 2017, and currently sit 1st, 3rd, 4th and 7th on the river.

Dear all,

Attached is a document with marshalling instructions for the SBR next week.
Please can all coxes, steers and bank parties read it carefully. There have
been a number of scratches in the W1x and NovM1x events and so the
timetable for these events has changed slightly. The M4+ races on Friday
have shifted later to accommodate an exam and so all other races on Friday
are now slightly earlier - please check your marshalling time carefully.
As usual, the race timetable on the website has also been updated and
should match the attached - please let me know ASAP if you spot any
discrepancies.

Many thanks to all crews, bank parties and Marshals for a good, and
efficient, afternoon's racing today, and for being patient with us at
times.

We can confirm the following results.
Men's IV+ QF: King's M1 scratch, Magdalene M1 proceed to SF
Men's IV+ QF: Fitzwilliam M1 beat Peterhouse M1 by 9 seconds
Men's 2- FF: Maggie beat Downing by 16 seconds
Women's 1x: FaT (Dixon) beat Jesus (Isaac) by 16 seconds

There are a few notes from today:
- Racing lines: Please keep to your side of the river, especially for
coxless boats your bank party may be helpful in keeping the best racing
line.
- Starting stations: There seems to be a contradiction between the CUCBC
website (set up for the traditional SBR) and the recently circulated
marshalling instructions. The recently circulated marshalling instructions
should be taken as fact in this instance- such that the first crew listed
will take **meadowside** and the second crew will take the towpath side.
- Many thanks for the prompt arrival and high competency of the Marshals
provided, long may this continue!
-Last-minute scratches: email committee at cucbc.org .
*Start and finish positions: *The start line will be the downstream posts
of the spinning zone for all crews.  The finish line will be Peter's Posts:
(https://goo.gl/maps/Gbrtow8QfKCc5g1j9). This is true for all races except
the novice single sculls, which will be 500m ending at the Little Bridge on

For obvious reasons, we aren't able to hold a formal prizegiving 
ceremony for the Smaller Boats Regatta.
Instead, prizes will be available for collection on the hard outside the 
Goldie boathouse tomorrow evening, once I've packed up after the last 
race - hopefully between 5:15 and 5:30pm.

Please can the winners come along to claim their prizes during this 
time, or send a representative to collect on behalf of their crew?
Apologies for the late notice: the prizes have only just arrived today 
but I think it's best to distribute them immediately after racing while 
there's a chance that competitors will still be down by the river.

events, with the University Fours Regatta provisionally due to run either

Dear Captains,

With entries closed, we have an impressive entry of 154 crews (41 senior
men, 43 senior women, 3 mixed senior, 27 novice men, 38 novice women, 2
mixed novice). This has resulted in a couple changes to allow marshalling
and racing of all crews and underrepresentation in the mixed division;
chief of which is we have had to adjust the finish from Peter's Posts to
the May's bottom finish, meaning the race course distance is now slightly
shorter at approximately 1km.

Thanks for being patient again with us whilst we draw up divisions and
instructions. Again, a lengthy email, due to the novel nature of this
year's racing; *Please read carefully* as we have had to account for new
factors in regards to marshalling and racing, and ask for clarifications if
any of the following is unclear. The website will be updated in due course.

*Divisions- GoR:*

If you would like to arrange a swap, please either choose an empty slot or
arrange to swap with a crew from a different division. You must email CUCBC
of the swap and Cc the other crew. *The deadline for swaps is Wednesday
16th June, 10pm.*

*Divisions- Regatta:*
Given the low number of mixed crews entered, the mixed crews will race in
the mens' second division. The mixed crews will first race other mixed
crews to determine the division winner, then will be drawn and race with
those in the men's second division who have already lost at least one race.
This means we will have eight total divisions, the timing of which have
been amended and on the attached race instructions.

To keep the top division competitive and similar to regatta-styles, the
fastest 16 crews from the GoR will compete in the SM1, SW1, NM1 and NW1
divisions. As agreed in the captain's meeting, the winning crews from SM1
and SW1 will receive university medals.
The winning crews from all other divisions will recieve trophies, which
will be the crews which will win the most races over the four days. This
means that for some second divisions, tie-breaker races may be required
after the racing on the final day, which will occur in the next timetabled
division on the same day.

For information the division sizes are as follows:
SM1- 16 crews, 8 races
SM2+SX- 28 crews (3 from SX), 14 races
SW1- 16 crews, 8 races
SW2- 27 crews, 13 races
NM1- 16 crews, 8 races
NM2+NX- 13 crews (2 from NX), 6 races
NW1- 16 crews, 8 races
NW2- 22 crews, 11 races

The deadline for GoR swaps has now passed, it will now *not* be possible to
swap or move divisions as we prepare race paperwork.

*Clarification on GoR:*
In response to some queries
- All crews who race the GoR and demonstrate they can do the course at race
pace safely and competently will race in the regatta
- The fastest 16 crews in the GoR will race in division 1
- The GoR race timings will be used to seed the first day's races to allow
for the best possible racing
- The GoR times for each crew will be released to captain's after the end
of the regatta, to keep each day's racing competitive and exciting.
- Crews which are obviously unfit for racing (from a safety or competency
viewpoint) from GoR will be removed from racing with no refund of fees.
(e.g. a crew which cannot row all 8s, cannot spin at the P&E without
crashing and cannot row in a straight line, let alone race)

races and being banned from the river.)

*Bank Party Sizes:*
Restricted to *TWO per crew.* You will be fined for anything over this, as
it risks overcrowding the towpath and compromising distancing practices.

*Ending point on COVID-19*
We are aware of the recent announcement delaying the final relaxation of
COVID-19 and we understand the need to stay cautious and vigilant and
respond to the rise in cases seen nationally and in Cambridge.
The current JER format has taken several factors into account: Numbers of
entries, competency and availability of crews, allowing all crews to race
fairly, requests from Cam Conservancy and COVID-19 distancing.

We have taken measures in organising the Regatta to limit the number of
individuals required to run the races and ensure there?s no contact
intended between any of the crews racing. However, even a relatively small
number of spectators on the towpath could make it impossible for us to run
the regatta safely and efficiently.
We cannot close the towpath nor Ditton Meadows to the public, but
spectators are strongly discouraged. If there are too many spectators and
it?s not clear that they are all obeying the maximum group size (currently
30) and observing social distancing, we may be forced to suspend the
regatta and cancel the remaining races, which would obviously be extremely
disappointing for everyone here.
It has been over a year since we have been able to run an Eight's event, we
ask you to spread the word and discourage spectators so that we are not
forced to cancel. *Public and Competitor safety is and must be our first
priority.*

Dear all,

Apologies for circulating this so late - I appreciate you all have a lot on your plates sorting out subs for all of your crews, and I?m sorry to add to your workload. Unfortunately we?re all really busy too, so there just wasn?t time to get this out sooner (sidenote; if you know anyone who?d like to help with organising CUCBC races in future, please put them in touch - many hands make light work!).

It?s essential that you send a marshal for each of your slots, as we can?t run the races without them. Marshals do not need to be particularly experienced, but please make sure they know how to pull a boat in without breaking its bowball off, and ideally use people who?ve competed in at least a few races before.

It will make everything run a lot smoother if all marshals familiarise themselves with both the marshalling instructions (for competitors) and the instructions for Marshals and Umpires (both available here: https://www.cucbc.org/eightsregatta <https://www.cucbc.org/eightsregatta>) before their slot. Please ensure marshals know where the start is, so they know where to go to check in.

If for whatever reason there?s no way your club can fill one of your marshalling slots, you can swap it with another college. Feel free to use the Captains list for this if you like. Hi all,

Unfortunately our first aid cover for the GoR and JER was pulled last night, due to a family emergency with the first aider, and St John?s don?t have anyone to replace them.

We?ve managed to secure alternative cover for Monday - Thursday, but none of the companies we?ve tried have anyone who can do tomorrow.

Does anyone know a qualified first aider who could be on hand for the GoR tomorrow? We have a portable first aid backpack, and I?m hoping to borrow one of the CRA?s automatic defibrillators.

A note please that we have regatta-style racing tomorrow (if you haven't

marshal in.

   - It feels good to be back on the towpath, seeing so many crews race! We
   are sorry for the crews who have been forced to scratch due to COVID-19
   self-isolation, however we cannot lose sight that we are still in a
   Pandemic and crew members must self-isolate if asked.
   - This is the first year where there have been more Women's crews
   entered in a CUCBC-run race than Men's crews, that we can recall.
   - We are still strongly discouraging spectators from attending. Any
   which do must be on meadowside, and abiding current social distancing
   practices.
   - Bank parties are limited to *2 cyclists per crew*.
   - All crews looked safe to race and no crews have been removed due to
   safety measures.
   - Many thanks to everyone for being aware of the new format for today-
   it is something we have never tried before!
   - A different race system is in place tomorrow so please re-read the
   race and marshalling instructions.
   - A set of keys have been handed in. Please email limeng at cucbc.org to
   arrange collection.
   - Control is now at the finish, this is where all marshals should
   collect bibs, sign in and receive their briefing.

Dear all,

We are only legally able to run the races this week because the BR Guidance has laid out a framework which allows legal requirements such as social distancing to be replaced by alternative mitigations. Unfortunately a large number of coxes yesterday were not complying with the BR requirements for stern-loaded boats.

All coxes MUST wear a face covering AND eye protection (this can just be sunglasses, or regular glasses if you wear them) at all times whilst in the boat.

Please ensure this message reaches every cox racing this week, and that they are complying. The last thing we need is for all of the races to be cancelled because something so easy to comply with was ignored.

It has been great to see so many crews back out on the river, even if it is
an unusual format of race for us at the time of year. I believe for the
first time we have more women's crew's competing than men's crews, so
that's one for the history books!

   - A reminder that NO crews are allowed to do stationary practise starts
   at any point on the row up to the start.
   - After marshalling between the Green Dragon bridge and the P&E crews
   should be ready to race and do not need to be pulled in on first post reach
   before heading down to the start.
   - Racing boats must stay on their stations, no matter how far ahead or
   behind the other crew they are. Crews that are not on their stations will
   be warned by umpires. Any crew being repeatedly warned by their umpire and
   not responding will be disqualified. Any crew causing a clash while off
   their station is liable to be immediately disqualified.

Hi all,

We?d just like to clarify a few points that have seen some confusion.

On substitutions, if a member of one of your crews has to self isolate due to being contact traced for someone who has tested positive, this does fall under the ?exceptional circumstances? which would allow a rower / cox from a lower crew to double up to enable the higher crew to race. Sadly this isn?t beneficial to your lowest crews I?m afraid :( Please note that this should only be used as a last resort, and if possible subbing someone up a crew and subbing someone else in their place is preferable (for them too I?m sure, as they won?t have to race twice).

Please note that the above should not be confused with a member of one of your crews being required to self isolate because their household pool test was positive and they?re awaiting their individual PCR, or they have symptoms and are awaiting a PCR result, etc. In these cases, the entire crew will be close contacts if the crew member does test positive, so the crew should withdraw from that day?s racing and not return unless the PCR result is negative.


On the draw, please note that the Swiss System that the Captains? voted for takes into account the number of wins each crew has accumulated, but the order of those wins is not relevant in the same way it would be for a plate competition (or plate plate, etc.). The software which produces the draw is quite complicated, but the short version is that each crew should expect to race a crew that has the same number of wins as them, but that they haven?t raced before.

In theory at least, this will result in not only an overall winner in each division (with tiebreak races in some divisions if required), but something much closer to the real ranking of all of the crews in that division than a plate / plate-plate style competition would produce (though admittedly with some ties that we won't have time to break).

Thanks for another great day of racing, with some very close calls!
Today's notes and fines are appended below, which will be published on the
website once we have sorted the draws and results.

Apologies for the delay in the draws and results: we had to wait for a few
queries to come back and some appeals are ongoing; we aim to get these out
as soon as possible once we get a complete set and I shall email you once
this is the case. Division timings will remain the same tomorrow. This draw
and results will be subject to ongoing appeals and tie-breaker races, so
please listen carefully to marshals and umpires instructions on tomorrow
for last-minute changes.

*Notes from the Umpires:*

   - Crews must not spin beside moored boats on Plough Reach. Either spin
   upstream of the Plough or downstream of First Post corner following
   marshalling instructions
   - Please do not be late to marshalling. We will brief marshals at the
   time stated on the marshalling rota so you need to come to the finish a few
   minutes beforehand.
   - A crew has had their day's result disqualified due to clashing with
   their opponent. Racing boats must stay on their stations; any crew being
   repeatedly warned by their umpire and not responding will be disqualified.
   - Away from the racing course, all crews must follow normal navigation
   rules, unless specifically instructed by an umpire or marshal.
   - Tomorrow is the final day of racing so we may require tie-breaker
   races in some divisions. Please listen carefully to any additional
   instructions given on the day, and bear with us as we react to race results
   to facilitate these races.

   - Caius NM1 - Dangerous coxing: failure to stay on station causing blade
   clash - ?50

Congratulations to Caius W2, Pembroke M2, Jesus SX, Caius NW1, Caius NM1, Fitzwilliam NW1 and Downing NM1 for their division wins, and to Caius W1 & Magdalene M1 for their overall wins.
Notes from the Umpires:

Thank you to all of the Crews, Bank Parties, Boatmen and Boatwomen, Marshals, and Umpires who made June Eights Regatta possible - hundreds of people volunteered a huge amount of their time to enable this large, multi-day regatta, and we are very grateful to all of you.
Hopefully CUCBC will never have to organise an Eights Regatta again, but thank you for bearing with us as we ironed out the kinks in the marshalling and race format.
There will not be a formal prizegiving ceremony due to the ongoing restrictions on group sizes, but prizes will be available for collection by a representative of each winning crew. Exact time/location will be confirmed on Friday.
We still have a set of unclaimed keys (with "Thasseus" on them) that were found on the towpath on Sunday. If they belong to you, please email committee at cucbc.org <mailto:committee at cucbc.org> to arrange collection.
