From cjs225 at cam.ac.uk Tue Sep 8 10:13:53 2020 From: cjs225 at cam.ac.uk (Casey Shepheard) Date: Tue, 8 Sep 2020 10:13:53 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Pilot survey for Fairbairns Message-ID: Dear Captains, My name is Casey and I am the Fairbairns Secretary for this year. Obviously, this term is going to be very different from usual, but we are all hoping we can get some rowing in and get back on the river! British Rowing is currently in Phase F of their return to rowing plan, and it is looking likely they will move to Phase G shortly, meaning local inter-club competitions should be able to go ahead. Assuming this holds through term, I am hoping we will be able to run Fairbairns in some capacity at the end of term. To that end, I think it would be useful to collect information from other clubs in order to figure out what divisions it would make sense to run. Novice term for many clubs is very up in the air (and may be postponed) but other clubs are planning to teach novices in tubs and small boats. It also seems that many clubs might be training in fours rather than eights, so it is possible it would make sense to run more fours divisions and fewer eights. Small boats also look like they will be making up a larger percentage of training for some clubs, so if there are fewer novice crews, I am floating the possibility of holding a small boats division on the Thursday. This would be on a shortened course, and only for rowers for whom the risk of falling in is very low (hopefully let's avoid hypothermia from immersion in December). I'd appreciate feedback as to whether you might support this and if your club has access to small boats. Please fill this form: https://forms.gle/ws2tPCcfY1zCExPN9, and feel free to email me with any further discussion! Any information would help in organising a (safe) Fairbairns making the best of the situation and giving us a reason to get up for those cold early mornings! Best wishes, Casey. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Note that this will be in addition to the usual start-of-year captains' meeting, which we're planning to also be held via Zoom shortly after the start of the Michaelmas Term. This email is being sent to the contacts email list, to pick up any incoming captains who have not yet had their CUCBC email accounts handed over to them from their predecessors. All future communications to captains will be sent to their CUCBC email, including the Zoom link for the meeting, so please ensure that you gain access to your CUCBC email if you haven't already. We recommend that captains check their CUCBC email daily during term time, as we often sent urgent communications this way. We are limited as to the total number of participants in the Zoom meeting, and so only two participants from each club will be allowed to join. Full guidance will be circulated with the Zoom link, but we will expect participants to change their Zoom name to represent their club (e.g. 'St Catharine's Men'). If anyone has anything they wish to be added to the agenda, please let me know. Best wishes, Matthew -- Matthew Temple CUCBC Exec. BR put out an update yesterday that clarifies that all of our clubs need to display an NHS QR code poster, as of today (I know, not great to have such little notice?). The update includes links to more information and the site where you can generate a QR code poster for your club. ACTION- please send any clarifications/edits to me by end of play, Friday 2nd October. I shall publish these this weekend. 2) an Appendix, with detailed notes on Captains' Points raised during the meeting. This is included as information only and will not be published anywhere. This is included should you wish to remind yourselves of any ideas that you want to follow up on or discuss with other captains. --- We will circulate the details of the next Captains meeting, to be held during the first two weeks of MT; do send any motions in the intervening period. As raised in the captains meeting, there was a general agreement that it would be helpful if CUCBC created a survey for captains to share what they are planning and their interactions with individual colleges. I shall send the survey in the next few days, along with further information. Should you have any questions that you would like to be added to the survey please email them to me ASAP. We were hoping for changes to the On Water Activity section to allow rowing with less than full crew, and to some extent they have delivered: Beginners When coaching beginners, it may not always be possible to follow the advice above that a whole crew should row together at all times. In these instances, you may wish to put alternative mitigations in place to help keep COVID-Secure. For example, you may ask rowers to wear a face covering when they are not actually rowing (e.g. they are sitting the boat) and to place this in a ziplock bag or similar when rowing to avoid it getting dirty or wet. This does now provide flexibility where previously there was very little, so I?d encourage you to discuss these changes with your college and boathouse staff and update your risk assessments accordingly. In particular, you may like to include multiple mitigations, such as the face coverings BR suggest, as well as bow four sitting the boat as far back on the slide as they can (without three and four?s blades getting in the way), and likewise have stern four sit as far forwards as they can (without five and six?s blades getting in the way).
