From conor at cucbc.org Mon Dec 7 18:46:34 2020 From: conor at cucbc.org (Conor Burgess) Date: Mon, 7 Dec 2020 18:46:34 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Rowing/sculling outside term time References: <8a29ea02-11cd-4a7e-bc78-b9ac24ab574e@Spark> Message-ID: <98a606e3-5b36-465d-abf6-b96689eb1b33@Spark> Dear all, * Captains please forward this message to all small boats users in your club * Whilst CUCBC does not set the flag outside term time, please remember that all other CUCBC rules (except where explicitly exempted) continue to apply. In particular, solid (i.e. non-flashing) white lights visible through 360 degrees are required with 15 minutes of lighting down and lighting up, and (particularly relevant this week) at all times when visibility is reduced, such as when it?s foggy or very wet. If in doubt, fit lights anyway. Please ensure lights have fresh batteries / are fully charged, particularly when it?s cold as their batteries don?t last as long. You may?additionally?wish to fit a non-flashing red light at the stern (never?at the bows) to assist other crews with determining your direction of travel. Details below on what to do if you do see one. Best wishes, Conor > From: Mike Foley > Sent: 05 December 2020 23:18 > To: CVF ; Tom Larnach ; Saint, Lesley > Subject: Avian flu outbreaks > > > Avian flu is around. At Fen Drayton this morning a birdwatcher reported that there was a Mute Swan by the guided busway, unable to move and with blood on the breast. He assumed it had been struck by a bus and reported it to RSPCA. They have just contacted him to say that the bird possibly had bird flu - bloody discharge from the mouth, swollen head but no obvious signs of an impact injury. The bird has been put down and Defra will analyse it to see if it has bird flu. > > > The Angling Trust?s Voluntary Bailiff Service (Roy Bridson) sent this message out today: > > > Hi everyone > > Just to confirm Bird flu has been confirmed in the Fenland swan population. > > Please be aware you may see dead swans on the Nene or Drains please under no circumstances go near or touch them. > > Phone 01733 203363 RSPCA they will direct you to the correct local swan rescue (recovery ) people as all dead swans must now be collected for investigation. > > > The Fen Drayton bird sparks a warning but it's more likely that Defra has already tested suspects from the Fens and found them positive. Some of our local Mute Swans sometimes occupy the same habitat as the wild swans that have migrated in for the winter (they can be carriers), and ducks are whizzing about all the time. I hope our swans will remain healthy. Bird flu was confirmed in other parts of the country in November in wild and domestic birds and the really nasty H5N8 strain is involved in at least two cases. > > > Avian influenza (bird flu) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) > > Keep your chickens indoors! > > > Regards > > Mike > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
