Thanks! CUWBC and CULRC will be holding a second open erg trial at Goldie Boathouse on 16th May for any women (openweight or lightweight) and lightweight men interested in our summer Dev Squad camp. The erg trial will consist of a 2000m test and will be used to select those who will be invited to the camp. This is primarily meant for those who participated in the April trial but DID NOT race at BUCS and want to show improvement, as well as those who might have missed that first trial. Anyone who raced at BUCS is automatically invited to camp and does not need to attend. Also, if you did the April trial, you will be considered for the camp regardless of your attendance next week. You can sign up for warm-up and test sessions here . Coxswains, we need you, too! Please sign up to express your interest. Roughly speaking, the standards we will be looking for are: <7:45 for openweight women, <7:55 for lightweight women, <7:00 for lightweight men. Details on the camp will be confirmed this week and information sent out ASAP. We've had over seventy college rowers participate in our first trial, and we hope to have another full house next Thursday! It's much easier if you get planned?subs?approved now, so we only have to deal with injury/illness?subs?during?Bumps. A?sub?is anyone who isn't in the crew listed on the CUCBC website (or, in the case of last minute changes, someone who won't have trained much with the crew this term). If you're just swapping people between crews permanently?(e.g. you've discovered a third boat rower makes your second boat go faster), you can do this on the CUCBC website up until the Getting On Race without requesting permission explicitly from us. In general,?subs?should meet the following requirements (I've added the rules inspiring this info to an appendix below): ? should have been eligible to row in the boat they are subbing into, had they been entered as a member of the crew (i.e. bona fide student at that college, not rowing in another boat, no blues or first Mays colours below third boat/third division, whichever is lower) ? subbing for someone who cannot make the races for a reason which is acceptable depending on the division they are competing in (see rule 25 below), or for someone who cannot make the race due to accident/illness/family emergency (which is the only case we'll accept a sub request with less than 24 hours notice). ? subs?may not come from a higher boat, without exception (i.e. any?sub?which would give an unfair advantage to the crew they're subbing into, e.g. M1 to M2 or W3 to W4, even for the GoR, is expressly forbidden). ? subs?must not have been training with a town club outside college hours If you submit requests for?subs?in the following format (hat tip to Sidney from Lents 2016 for this example), we'll be able to approve them very quickly in most cases: Sub?1 seat number, FIRSTNAME SURNAME Race?Saturdaydivision 4 Boat?Sidney M2 Reason?e.g. [injured shoulder | stomach bug | details of compulsory academic commitment] Substitute?FIRSTNAME SURNAME - confirmation of student status at relevant college, confirmation not rowed in any other crew in this set of?Bumps, confirmation not rowed with a town club this term, brief description of rowing history (especially relevant for coxing?subs, who will also need to attend the coxes briefing and be competent enough to control the crew they're subbing into). Please ensure your requests are sent to BOTH?committee at cucbc.orgAND?seniorcommittee at cucbc.org, and where possible group your requests into as few emails as possible. Please also ensure that you reply all to follow up enquiries. If need be, feel free to plead your case for why an exception should be made for your particular?sub?request, but we'll just fall back on the precedent set by previous decisions (that is why the Senior Committee exist after all). Please forward this email onto any LBCs / VCs / crew captains who might be making?substitution?requests. Many thanks, Conor Appendix Rule 5 of 'Rules for Racing - General': a. That the crew which competes in the first heat of a CUCBC event (including the Getting on Race) be considered the official crew for the duration of that event. No change in the official crew shall be allowed, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which will usually be given only in exceptional circumstances such as accident or illness, or subject to Rule 25 in the case of the Lent and May races. b. That before the first heat, approval may be sought from the Executive Committee for a?substitute?in the first heat. If this is granted, the official crew should be provided in writing by the club concerned to the Executive Committee, and is expected to be the crew which has trained together that term. The official crew must be provided in advance of the first heat. c. That?substitution?of rowers from crews in a higher position on the River to those in either a lower position or those competing in the Getting on Race shall not be permitted. Rule 21 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' a That no person who has gained first Lent or May Colours or a Trial Cap may row or steer below the third division of the CUCBC Lent or May Races or below his/her College third crew, whichever is the lower, without the permission of the Hon.?Secretaries. This shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That no person who has rowed in, steered or been a reserve for any of the CUBC, CUWBC or CULRC crews may row below his/her College third May Boat without the permission of the Hon.?Secretaries, which shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. Rule 22 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' a That, with the exception of the sandwich boats, no-one may row or steer in more than one division in one day, and that no-one who has rowed in a particular crew in the races may then row in another crew, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness. b That anyone may row in one division and steer in another on the same day. Rule 25 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' Substitutes must be deemed capable by the Executive Committee of competing safely in the division they will be subbing into, and all substitutes must be eligible competitors for the crew they will be subbing into. Permission for substitution shall only be given in the exceptional circumstances allowed by Rule 5 and: a. to crews in the first or second division in the case of compulsory and immovable academic commitments; b. to crews in the third division in the case of academic commitments, or other sporting commitments; c. to crews in lower divisions for those reasons or any other reason, d. provided permission for any eligible substitute is sought at least 24 hours before racing. Rule 28 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' That no-one who has rowed or steered in a successful boat in the Getting-On Race row or steer respectively in a higher boat during the races which follow, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness of someone in a higher boat. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The rules are quite simple; between 17:30 and 18:30 and 19:00 and 20:00, the only college crews that should be on the river between Chesterton Footbridge and Baitsbite lock should be first VIIIs and VIIIs in the first two divisions of the May Bumps, with only Men's or Women's crews in each slot per the timetable here . IVs comprising rowers who are eligible to row in the evening hours may row below Baitsbite lock during either or both of these two windows, making use of the 18:30 - 19:00 changeover to get to or from Baitsbite lock. The same is true of e.g. a Men's VIII which wants to row during Women's Hour. Please note however that crews going over the lock should be getting to Baitsbite before 17:30 if going before early hour, or before 19:00 if using the changeover, and that this may require boating before 18:30 to get to Chesterton footbridge just after 18:30. CUCBC Exec Committee needs more members, including a new Honorary Secretary for next year. The Exec Committee is responsible for the day-to-day running of student rowing in Cambridge, including setting the flag, maintaining good relations with other river users, and dealing with incidents involving college clubs. We also organise and run University IVs in Michaelmas and Small Boats Regatta at the start of Easter, and manage the admin for Lent and May Bumps. The more people we have, the less each person has to do, so we would really appreciate more hands! We would especially appreciate more people to help with setting the flag - with most of our members either not rowing, training at Ely, or going out on the same days, finding someone who will be at the river early in the morning can sometimes be a challenge! We don?t expect all our members to do everything, so if you?re not going to be able to help with running races but could do flag setting and admin, we?d still love to hear from you! The Hon Sec role is very very slightly different from the ordinary committee members?, in that it?s required to be held by a student, and you get a different email address (cucbc at cucbc.org) which people sometimes write to instead of the whole committee. I usually try to respond to such emails myself, but the rest of the committee are happy to help when I?m busy with work or not sure how to respond. I?m losing the battle with this iPad, so I?m going to stop there! I hope you can work out the gist of it! When rowing below Baitsbite lock, you must not start race pieces until you reach the far side of Horningsea village. There are signs indicating where you need to slow down to reduce wash; this is essential because a racing VIII creates a lot of wash in that stretch of very narrow river, and nasty accidents have been known to occur with e.g. boiling water on the house boats along that stretch. You can still get a 2k piece in from the downstream side of Horningsea to Clayhithe Bridge. 2. The council have been taking early morning noise complaints very seriously, and have started sending out their own independent assessors to record loud crews & bank parties before 07:30am. We will be getting in touch with the clubs identified individually, but I must stress the seriousness of this. If they don't start seeing improvements, the powers they have far exceed what we will fine you! There can genuinely be *no coaching from the bank* anywhere *upstream of the Railway Bridge before 07:30*, and *cox box volume must be kept to the minimum safe level* and *cox box use limited to the bare minimum calls* everywhere upstream of the Railway Bridge before 07:30. Thanks in advance for your cooperation, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Many thanks, and best of luck for the remaining weeks of of training (and exams where appropriate), Isabel ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Isabel Nimmo Date: Thu, 23 May 2019 at 11:20 Subject: May bumps cox briefings To: Dear Coxes, The May Bumps Safety Briefings will be held on Sunday the 9th of June in the QB Lecture Theatre in Emmanuel college (if you go in the main entrance by the p'lodge, it's fairly well signposted). The Senior Cox briefing will be held 6:30-7pm. The Novice Cox briefing will be held 7-7:45pm. Novice coxes (defined as those who have not competed *as a cox* in a set of CUCBC* run bumps before) must attend in person, unless they receive prior permission to miss it from the CUCBC Safety Officer. Senior coxes (those who have competed before) may be represented by another senior cox, provided that representative undertakes to brief them in turn before the start of racing. Members of bank parties and rowers who'd like a bit more insight into what their coxes might be doing are very welcome to attend either (or both!) briefings. *There will also be an informal (and very optional) Q&A with some senior college coxes on how to race bumps well (in addition to safely) immediately after at 7:45pm.* Best wishes, Isabel * CUCBC rules are somewhat different to CRA, Torpids, Eights and Oxford town bumps, so I'm afraid they don't count. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course. As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a free dinner (including drinks) at a pub the week after Bumps. Furthermore, everyone who volunteers for umpiring before Thursday 6th June will count towards their college's marshal allocation (if you sign up after this, please drop me an email!). You don't need to have umpired before. There will be a meeting for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps before so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave two divisions clear before your race and one after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: http://www.cucbc.org/mays/times The umpires briefing will be on Sunday 9th June at 18:00 in Emmanuel College. It'll last about half an hour, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. You can sign up here: http://www.cucbc.org/mays/umpires/signup If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at conor at cucbc.org Many thanks, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The event is a 15km head race (last year this was 3 ? times around the Olympic rowing canal, this year most likely it will be held on the Moscow river). The event this year will take place on Saturday 28th September. You would need to arrive on Thursday 26th and leave on the Sunday 29th. Friday is taken up with boat preparation etc,, Saturday morning 500m sprint competition and Saturday afternoon is the main event. They are very keen to get foreign crews involved. To encourage attendance, the federation will help in visa invitations, subsidised accommodation, provide all airport pick up and drop offs, provide boats, plus a bit of culture. Last year the women's crews from Jesus and Kings competed and won medals and I am sure will be happy to tell you of their great experience! Even better, after this early season distance training, Jesus went on to win the Fairbairns :) You can come in VIIIs or IVs. Mixed crews are also welcome and we can match crews with local crews which can also be fun. Depending on the number of crews who make it, accommodation will be either entirely paid for, or will cost no more than Eur 40 per night full board (shared rooms). On the last evening there will be a barbeque or similar followed by releasing you into Moscow clubland.... for more on the latter, talk to Claire and Martha...:) Flights from London take about 4 hours and cost +/- GBP250 return on BA or Aeroflot. There is a +2 hour time difference. Visas can be a bit of drag but not so bad if you give yourselves time. See https://russiable.co.uk/getting-russian-visa-united-kingdom/ We would be very happy to welcome you. Moscow is a beautiful, exciting and very vibrant City and the event is informal and fun. If you do have an interest, please do let me know. The sooner we can get crew lists together also the better, as we need to organise the visa invitation letters. If there are any non-Cambridge crews you know of who you think would enjoy this sort of event, please feel free to pass on this email and my details. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have All the best and hoping to see you in September and good luck to you all in the Mays!
