From izzy at cucbc.org Fri Mar 1 16:04:21 2019 From: izzy at cucbc.org (Isabel Nimmo) Date: Fri, 1 Mar 2019 16:04:21 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Coxing on the Tideway (WEHoRR & ManHORR) Message-ID: Dear Captains and Coxes, This is only really of interest to those of you planning to enter WEHoRR or HORR. Ro Thompson has agreed to run a briefing for any interested coxes on the 12th of March (the Tuesday after bumps) at 7pm. Racing on the Tideway is not like the Cam - the stream makes positioning of your shell much more important when racing, and marshalling is considerably more complex (though no less chaotic...) I can thoroughly recommend this talk to anyone, whether they've raced on the Tideway before or not. Ro has been coxing for 15 years, including three years training on the Tideway with Vesta Rowing Club based in Putney. She has four Tideway pennants, three from WeHORR and one from HORR. Whilst as Vesta she coxed the top womens crew to 3rd and 4th place in WeHORR and raced twice in the elite womens 8s event at Henley Royal Regatta. So she is very well placed to offer guidance on handling racing on the Thames. A venue will be confirmed closer to the time, but I wanted to get this into the diray before the madness that is next week descends upon us all. Best wishes for the last few days of training, and for racing next week, Isabel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Senior Cox briefing will be held 5-5:30pm. The Novice Cox briefing will be held 5:30-6:15pm. Novice coxes (defined as those who have not competed in a set of CUCBC run bumps before) must attend in person, unless they receive permission to miss it from the CUCBC Safety Officer. Senior coxes (those who have competed before) may be represented by another senior cox, provided that representative undertakes to brief them in turn before the start of racing. Although it's stating the obvious, clearly crews should be prepared for this We are intending on racing, so crews should marshall as normal, but ensure they do so in plenty of time and bring sufficient warm clothing Crews should be accompanied by competent bank parties to assist with bringing them in and holding them on the bank. Maintaining control of your boat and clearing quickly and effectively after bumps is particularly important in these conditions For purely practical reasons, especially given the cold, we are less likely to consider rerows today given the delays this will pose to waiting crews; if so technical decisions will be based on crew separations at the point of any obstruction arising. If so, this will affect at least the first two divisions racing (1240 and 1320), and possibly later though is forecast to drop quite quickly. Can I ask all to refresh yourselves on the advice sent before Thursday's racing, which was well heeded. Marshall well on time and bring sufficient spare clothing, and competent and experienced bank party members. Be particularly aware around bumping, acknowledging and clearing sensibly and in full control of the crew. If we do suffer delays affecting later divisions, this will be updated via the website and lists, but unless we notify otherwise you should assume your division's marshalling will be on time. Please note there are normally no rerows on Saturday. In an early 'checkmate' situation we may consider rerowing a large part of an obstructed division, but even that will be difficult under the current forecast. Can I also re-emphasise the importance of rowing home safely and sensibly after your race, and in particular no swapping around of crew members or cox. This is only again only really of interest to those of you planning to enter WEHoRR or HORR. As a reminder Ro Thompson has agreed to run a briefing for any interested coxes on the 12th of March (tomorrow!) at *7:30pm in the Jock Colville Hall in Churchill college*. The erg trial will consist of a 2000m test and will be used to select those who will race for the Light Blue on 4th, 5th or 6th May in Nottingham. You can sign up for warm-up and test sessions here . Coxswains, we need you, too! Please sign up to express your interest. We plan to enter crews in the Beginner 8+ and Intermediate 4+ events at BUCS: Beginner Men?s 4+ Saturday (4th May) Beginner Women?s 4+ Sunday (5th May) Beginner Men?s 8+ Sunday (5th May) Inter Men?s 4+ Sunday (5th May) Inter Women?s 4+ Monday (6th May) Beginner Women's 8+ Monday (6th May) How many we actually select will depend on the number of participants, as well as results. Once selected, Development Squad crews should plan to train 3-4 sessions prior to BUCS - exact schedule TBC. Roughly speaking, the standards we will be looking for are: <7:45 for openweight women, <7:55 for lightweight women, <7:00 for lightweight men. We will also be holding two open Development Squad erg sessions prior to BUCS and one or two after - look for a separate email. This was something that City and 99?s did when HoRR was cancelled a couple of years ago. The aim would be to give people a chance to have some form of informal competitive occasion. A few points: We would need to be sure that the Cam was safe to row on and any club wanting to take part should check conditions with their safety officer. Safety would be the responsibility of each club. We would not be able to get a river closure and so so this would not be a ?race" but rather we would collectively be offering a timing service to crews doing pieces on the Cam. This means that any crew taking part would need to give way to other river users where the normal traffic rules apply and would need to steer the normal navigation lines How it might work I estimate that there would be up to 25 crews wanting to take part We would set up a start and finish timing post using the RowClock app at the motorway bridge and at the top finish - this would need to be manned by volunteers. We could run this from 2:30pm to 3:30pm when the river generally has less traffic Each crew would have a bank party for safety. The bank party would be there to advise the crew if they needed to stop or take action to avoid other river users The bank party would give the crew?s name to the timers and their piece time would be recorded Afterwards crews could meet at the Waterman to compare times, make excuses and so on Please let me know if this might hold interest for you, or if you see any issues with the above. I would like to avoid racing on Monday 22nd due to the bank holiday, but if we have lots of entries we may need to use all three afternoons. Entries should be made via captains using the CUCBC website (https://www.cucbc.org/regatta/enter). Information for each event, including eligibility criteria, is available online here: http://www.cucbc.org/handbook/racing/sbr. We can normally accommodate competitors who want to enter 2 events, but please note that 3 or more events for a single competitor is unlikely to be possible. Please note that, following a consultation in Michealmas and a vote in the Lent term captains' meeting, there are a few changes to the rules this year: 1. The Bushe-Fox Freshman's sculls will not be offered 2. Blues, Half-blues, Goldie/Blondie colours and Trial caps are no longer allowed to enter the Fairbairn Junior Sculls. Triallists should instead be entering the Delafield or Colquhoun Sculls - with the aim of encouraging more college athletes to enter the Fairbairn sculls. 3. University medals (and Michell cup points) will only be awarded to the winners of the Novice Sculls, Fairbairn Junior Sculls or Foster-Fairbairn Pairs if there are four or more entrants in their category. This year, LMBC have agreed to transfer the organisation and running of the Colquhoun Sculls to CUCBC, so we will be offering that as part of SBR. Given that there won't be a captain's meeting between now and the SBR, if any captains have any objections to this, please let me know via email. The deadline for entries to the SBR, including payment, is Wednesday 10th April at 23:45. Entry Fees are ?6 for the Peter Brandt and Maiden Sculls, ?10 for all other single scull races and ?16 per double or pair. Entry fees can be paid by bank transfer only (Account name: Cambridge University Combined Boat Club; Account number: 00008487; Sort code: 72-00-06). Please use a sensible payment reference that will allow us to match your payment to your college/entry. Please note that competing crews will be expected to provide marshals (via their clubs) to ensure the smooth and safe running of races. Failure to provide marshals as required will result in the automatic scratching/disqualification of the relevant competing crew. More specific details will be available once we have a list of entries and are able to put together a racing timetable. Best wishes, Matthew -- Matthew Temple CUCBC Exec.
