Before I get started, could I ask any cox captains to pass on to their junior coxes who are not on the cox mailing list, and club captains - I'm aware not all of you have cox captains, so the same request. Many thanks! *Bumps Safety Briefings* These will be held early evening on Sunday the 3rd of March. Exact time and venue will be confirmed soon. Most of you will have sat through at least one of these before, but for the benefit of those competing for the first time, these are safety briefings held for all participating coxes. Novice coxes (defined as those who have not competed in a set of CUCBC run bumps before) must attend in person, unless they receive permission to miss it from the CUCBC Safety Officer. Senior coxes (those who have competed before) may be represented by another senior cox, provided that representative undertakes to brief them in turn before the start of racing. *Bumps Bank Parties* Following on from some discussions over the summer, it was suggested that bank party (especially inexperienced ones) and some rowers might find it useful to come along to the briefings to have a better understanding of what coxes are likely to be doing, especially when clearing after a bump. Come one, come all! I'm looking for a fairly big venue. I think it's unlikely we'll fill it! This is very much not a requirement (I'm well aware that many of the members of bank parties have been doing this a *lot* longer than I have), but an invitation to anyone who'd like to come along. *Other Cox Related Stuff* Also following on from some discussions over the summer, it has been suggested that CUCBC could do a little bit more to facilitate general cox happiness. I'm afraid last term was eaten by novice stuff, and I've basically been pretty unwell since early January, but I'm awake now and better late than never. With that in mind, I'd like to suggest three possible things: 1) very informal cox social. If popular, I suggest taking over a coffee shop some evening or weekend. It'd be a chance to have a chat to other coxes, complain about rowers, and whinge about how cold it is. 2) The safety briefing is purely about safety. I would not set myself up as the font of all bumps knowledge, but I'm happy to call in some favours and put some experienced coxes in the room after the safety briefing for a Q&A/general chat about how to race bumps effectively (as well as safely). 3) Coxing Seminar - this had very mixed reviews last time, but I've had a few messages recently asking us to run another one. With all of these, I'm not actually sure how popular they'd actually be. Given that, I've stuck up a poll on the Coxes of Cambridge FB group (if you don't know what this is, search for it - it will change your life when it comes to finding subs!) Please feel free to express opinions there, or by shooting me an e-mail if you'd rather. Hope you're all well, not too frozen, and best of luck for the rest of training and racing this term. I'm the secretary for Queens' BC, and I've recently come across the not-for-profit campaign "Rowing Together for Healthy Minds"; set up to promote mental health in rowing. They are raising money for the charity Mind through the sale of tech tops for only ?13, designed to be worn under club all in ones. While many college clubs don't compete in their targeted races, it'd be really great to see as many people as possible getting behind this great cause in training, as well as racing for those who wear all in ones (if there's enough interest I'd like to organise making the last day of Bumps a targeted race where as many people as possible are wearing these tops!) Here's some more information on it: Rowing Together for Healthy Minds (RTHM), was started in memory of Ren? Zamudio , who died by suicide in January 2017. Ren? learnt to row as an undergrad at Bristol University before continuing his studies and training at Imperial College. Ren? shone with confidence and charisma, and his death was a colossal shock, as for many similar cases, he was the last person you would think to be suffering from mental health issues RTHM aspires to raise the profile of mental health in rowing, to inform athletes and coaches about the symptoms of depression and other disorders, and ultimately to make it easier for people suffering from these issues to reach out for help in future. RTHM aims to do this by: Partnering with boat clubs across the UK. Whilst our main target is student rowing clubs, we are open to all. Selling our Rival Kit universal charity tech tops. These high-quality tops will be worn by athletes from all clubs at races throughout 2019 including BUCS Head and Regatta, Quintin Head and the Head of the River Races. They?re available now on the Rival Kit website. Supplying a free poster to all affiliated clubs that outlines the club?s commitment to prioritising the mental health of its athletes. Donating all profits to our partner charity, Mind. They offer information about mental health and provide support to anyone affected by these issues. Inform and educate others on mental health via our social media accounts @rthm_uk on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Thanks for reading such a long post, to get in touch with them reach out on social media or email rthm.ukmind at gmail.com . Please let me know if you have any other queries/ideas about this, or want to talk about mental health generally (in rowing or otherwise!) Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course. As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a free dinner (including drinks) at a pub the week after Bumps. Furthermore, everyone who volunteers for umpiring before Wednesday 27th Feb will count towards their college's marshal allocation (if you sign up after this, please drop me an email!). You don't need to have umpired before. There will be a meeting for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps before so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave two divisions clear before your race and one after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: http://www.cucbc.org/lents/times The umpires briefing will be on Sunday 3rd March, time and location TBC. It'll last about half an hour, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. URL: From conor at cucbc.org Tue Feb 19 17:16:43 2019 From: conor at cucbc.org (Conor Burgess) Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2019 17:16:43 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Substitutions in Bumps Message-ID: Dear Captains, It's time for the termly reminder that all subs in all boats for any Bumps race (including and especially for the GoR) must be approved by the CUCBC Exec Committee. It's much easier if you get planned subs approved now, so we only have to deal with injury/illness subs during Bumps. A sub is anyone who isn't in the crew listed on the CUCBC website (or, in the case of last minute changes, someone who won't have trained much with the crew this term). If you're just swapping people between crews permanently (e.g. you've discovered a third boat rower makes your second boat go faster), you can do this on the CUCBC website up until the Getting On Race without requesting permission explicitly from us. In general, subs should meet the following requirements (I've added the rules inspiring this info to an appendix below): - should have been eligible to row in the boat they are subbing into, had they been entered as a member of the crew (i.e. bona fide student at that college, not rowing in another boat, no blues or first Mays colours below third boat/third division, whichever is lower) - subbing for someone who cannot make the races for a reason which is acceptable depending on the division they are competing in (see rule 25 below), or for someone who cannot make the race due to accident/illness/family emergency (which is the only case we'll accept a sub request with less than 24 hours notice). - subs may not come from a higher boat, without exception (i.e. any sub which would give an unfair advantage to the crew they're subbing into, e.g. M1 to M2 or W3 to W4, even for the GoR, is expressly forbidden). - subs must not have been training with a town club outside college hours If you submit requests for subs in the following format (hat tip to Sidney from Lents 2016 for this example), we'll be able to approve them very quickly in most cases: Sub 1 seat number, FIRSTNAME SURNAME *Race* Saturday division 4 *Boat* Sidney M2 *Reason* e.g. [injured shoulder | stomach bug | details of compulsory academic commitment] *Substitute* FIRSTNAME SURNAME - confirmation of student status at relevant college, confirmation not rowed in any other crew in this set of Bumps, confirmation not rowed with a town club this term, brief description of rowing history (especially relevant for coxing subs, who will also need to attend the coxes briefing and be competent enough to control the crew they're subbing into). Please ensure your requests are sent to BOTH committee at cucbc.org AND seniorcommittee at cucbc.org, and where possible group your requests into as few emails as possible. If need be, feel free to plead your case for why an exception should be made for your particular sub request, but we'll just fall back on the precedent set by previous decisions (that is why the Senior Committee exist after all). Please forward this email onto any LBCs / VCs / crew captains who might be making substitution requests. Many thanks, Conor *Appendix* *Rule 5 of 'Rules for Racing - General':* a. That the crew which competes in the first heat of a CUCBC event (including the Getting on Race) be considered the official crew for the duration of that event. No change in the official crew shall be allowed, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which will usually be given only in exceptional circumstances such as accident or illness, or subject to Rule 25 in the case of the Lent and May races. b. That before the first heat, approval may be sought from the Executive Committee for a substitute in the first heat. If this is granted, the official crew should be provided in writing by the club concerned to the Executive Committee, and is expected to be the crew which has trained together that term. The official crew must be provided in advance of the first heat. c. That substitution of rowers from crews in a higher position on the River to those in either a lower position or those competing in the Getting on Race shall not be permitted. *Rule 21 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races'* a That no person who has gained first Lent or May Colours or a Trial Cap may row or steer below the third division of the CUCBC Lent or May Races or below his/her College third crew, whichever is the lower, without the permission of the Hon. Secretaries. This shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That no person who has rowed in, steered or been a reserve for any of the CUBC, CUWBC or CULRC crews may row below his/her College third May Boat without the permission of the Hon. Secretaries, which shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. *Rule 22 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races'* a That, with the exception of the sandwich boats, no-one may row or steer in more than one division in one day, and that no-one who has rowed in a particular crew in the races may then row in another crew, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness. b That anyone may row in one division and steer in another on the same day. *Rule 25 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races'* Substitutes must be deemed capable by the Executive Committee of competing safely in the division they will be subbing into, and all substitutes must be eligible competitors for the crew they will be subbing into. Permission for substitution shall only be given in the exceptional circumstances allowed by Rule 5 and: a. to crews in the first or second division in the case of compulsory and immovable academic commitments; b. to crews in the third division in the case of academic commitments, or other sporting commitments; c. to crews in lower divisions for those reasons or any other reason, d. provided permission for any eligible substitute is sought at least 24 hours before racing. *Rule 28 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races'* That no-one who has rowed or steered in a successful boat in the Getting-On Race row or steer respectively in a higher boat during the races which follow, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness of someone in a higher boat. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Members of bank parties and rowers who'd like a bit more insight into what their coxes might be doing are very welcome to attend either (or both!) briefings. *There will also be an informal (and very optional) Q&A with some senior college coxes on how to race bumps well (in addition to safely) immediately after at 6:15pm.* Best wishes, Isabel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you have any questions about either of the events, please don?t hesitate to contact me (secretary at firstandthird.org ). Entries for both events are limited?sign up before it?s too late! The Talbott Cup (Lower Boats Regatta) Entries for the Talbott Cup, First and Third?s Lent Term Lower Boats Regatta, are now open. Entries close at 23:59 Tuesday 5th March. The Talbott Cup was created six years ago to provide increased racing opportunity for lower boats, which are often disadvantaged by the Pembroke Regatta categorisation system and the lower number of Bumps divisions in Lents. After the success of last year?s event, the race will be run on Tuesday 12th March, from 14:00. Entries are open to boats no higher than M3s/W2s, although exceptional entries (M2s of predominantly ex-novices) may be permitted on a case-by-case basis. The regatta is, however, intended for lower boats? rowers and, as such, we ask that no rower enter who has competed in any Bumps in an M1, M2, or W1. The race will be run in a similar style to Pembroke Regatta, with divisions for W2, M3, W3, and M3. Tankards will be awarded to crews winning any event with at least four entries, with t-shirt going to the winners of the highest divisions on both sides. Entry is ?50 per crew. Entries can be made via the link below: https://goo.gl/forms/cU853X8Pl06Z2HYq2 The rules of the regatta are also accessible at this link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1OWE5ad7lULnkZj4Sb1HfKmvchLTtFSRv Second Trinity Challenge Sculls (STCS) First and Third Trinity Boat Club will be running Second Trinity Challenge Sculls (STCS) on Tuesday 12th March from 14:00. Entries are now open, and will close at 23:59 Tuesday 5th March. The event is a 2600 m upstream head race from Little Bridge to Peter?s Posts and will consist of a single division. The categories are: M1x (fine), M1x (restricted), W1x (fine), W1x (restricted), M2x, W2x, Mixed 2x, M2-, W2-. Restricted class singles are the wider, more stable sort of boats one would expected to see novices and beginner scullers using. If you are in any doubt, please do get in touch and we can clarify for you. Tankards will be presented to the winners of events with three or more entries. Entry is ?8 per seat. Later submissions will cause problems with setting the number of crews/spaces in the GoR so please be prompt. 1 form per club please, covering both men and women. No need to physically print/sign/scan the form, just complete in Word and send it back to Mark at mark at cucbc.org . Outings before 9.00 on weekdays and at any time on the weekend count as 1 outing, those taking place after 9.00 on weekdays may count as 1.5. Races (including the GoR itself for those taking part) count as 1 outing. Only outings in VIIIs count. We're pragmatic about subs / crew changes / injuries etc., but please let the committee know about any coxes who have not personally managed 12 sessions and what their prior experience is. If you have a crew who will not have managed to complete 12 sessions before Friday, but think you have a compelling reason that they ought to be allowed to race, then please let us or Mark know. If you, or anyone you know who might be keen (with relevant experience), can make these divisions, we?d love to have you signup. As a reminder, everyone who umpires will be invited to a free umpires dinner the week after racing, and anyone who signs up in the next two days will count towards their colleges allocation of marshals (meaning fewer slots to fill, and less work finding people to fill them!). If you sign up after that please drop me an email or I might miss you off the rota.
