Dear Captains,

The start of term Captains' meeting will take place on Sunday 7th October
at 5pm in the Long Room at Murray Edwards College. The agenda will be
circulated in due course, but if you have any items you would like to raise
then please let me know in the next few days.

The University IVs 2018 <http://www.cucbc.org/uni_fours> will run from
Monday 22nd October to Friday 26th October. Entries will open shortly after
the Captains' meeting, and will close on Friday 12th October. Entries must
be made by college Captains through the CUCBC website. All competing crews
will be expected to provide marshals to ensure the safe running of the
regatta.

This email is being sent to the Contacts list in case any incoming Captains
are yet to receive their CUCBC email logins from their predecessors - if
this applies to you then please ensure that your email and website logins
are handed over ASAP. All Captains should check their CUCBC email
regularly, ideally every day.

Finally, we have already received complaints of excessive noise from coxes
on the river before 07:30 - please ensure your crews and coaches are aware
of the usual early morning noise restrictions, and in particular, the need
to keep coxboxes turned down to a minimum before 07:30.

As part of the Captains meeting, we will be electing a new CUCBC Hon. Sec. for the coming year. We are accepting nominations for this position up until 48 hours before Sunday?s meeting (so 17:00 on Friday). If you know of anyone who might be interested, please do encourage them to come forwards. Even if they decide not to stand this year, there?s always next year to think of!

Please also find attached the CUCBC Captains Consultation on upcoming rule changes (and please accept my apologies for not sending this out over the summer). If you have any thoughts on this you?d like to share before the meeting, feel free to reply to this email (with your choice of CC - I?m happy to take comments directly to put them forward anonymously, or I?d encourage you to CC the two committees if you?re happy to do so. Dear Captains,

Entries for the University Fours 2018 are now open, and will close at 
23:45 on Friday 12th October. Entries should be made via Captain's 
accounts on the CUCBC website - after you login, you should see a link 
to "Regatta Entries" on the right hand side of the page.

The entry fee (?25 per crew) and any outstanding balance on your CUCBC 
college bill, must both be paid by the same deadline. If the balance is 
negative, this is a credit and should be subtracted from any entry fees.

Bill queries should be addressed to Dr Dan Wilkins 
(seniortreasurer at cucbc.org). Please email Dan to claim any payments you 
make to CUCBC. The preferred method of payment if by bank transfer; the 
CUCBC bank account details are on your college bill.

If you have any queries about the Uni 4s then please let me know 
(matthew at cucbc.org).

Dear all,

Minutes of Sunday's meeting are attached. Because there was so much
discussion, please can everyone that was there check that they match your
memories of what was said and especially that they are a fair
representation of what you said, and let me know of any issues before I
upload them to the website. If I have misrepresented you or didn't note
down your comments at all, apologies - it was not deliberate, I promise!

All clubs should have valid insurance showing on their club information
page on the CUCBC website. (Log into the website with your captain's login;
there will be a menu on the right hand side of the page, with a heading
such as newhall.women; click on 'My Club Information Form'.) All details on
this page should be up to date, but in particular at the bottom of the page
are details of your club's insurance. If the Renewal Date is in red and
shows a date in the past, and is not updated by *the end of this Wednesday
10th October*, *your club will not be allowed to boat* until you are shown
as having valid insurance.

If you have problems accessing the captains' part of the website, email Dan
Wilkins at webmaster at cucbc.org; if you have a legitimate reason for not
being able to update your insurance details before Thursday, email Mark
Jacobs at mark at cucbc.org.

Dear All,

At the start of every year we require confirmation from all clubs that they have suitable public liability in place, which must include 'member to member' type cover (all major providers include this as standard).

The deadline for this would usually be the end of week 1 (i.e. yesterday). Having been slow to put out the initial notice though, I'll extend this to Sunday evening.

If you've not already done so, you'll need to log in to the CUCBC website and update your club's insurance information. Anyone who has not done this by Sunday will not be permitted to boat until it's done and I've checked it.

There'll be other stuff to do later in term too, more on that later...

Dear Captains, Contacts and Coxes,

This is a gentle reminder that CUCBC crews on the water within 15 minutes
of Lighting Up or Down must have static white lights fitted to the bow and
stern of their boat. (And the lights have to be switched on, and they have
to have charged batteries...)

I appreciate it's early in term, and that many clubs may well have removed
their lights since last time they needed them in February, but it does make
a significant difference to visibility in the early morning and with the
number of crews on the water, it's actually a real help to coxes trying to
avoid unnecessary collisions. This is doubly true if (as with this morning)
there's a significant amount of fog on the water for the first part of
outings.

Please do take a few minutes over the next few days to check your equipment
is mounted so it can be seen, and that it still works.

All of these have served our club well and the only reason for sale is that we are upgrading our entire set to olympic diameter.

Breu sadly passed away after a battle with breast cancer.

Dear all,

The draw and race timetable for Uni 4s are now available here: 
http://www.cucbc.org/uni_fours

The main change to the draft timetable is that the races on Monday will 
now be run a little later; hopefully this will give people more time to 
finish labs etc.

The marshals rota is attached to this email. All competing clubs are 
required to provide marshals. Failure to provide your allocated marshals 
will result in your club not being allowed to compete, as marshals are 
essential to the safe running of the event. Marshals should be senior 
rowers or coxes, and will need a bike. They should meet at the Railway 
Bridge at the start of their slot.  If you need to swap your marshalling 
slot with another club then you must email me, copying in a 
representative from both crews involved in the swap, to confirm that 
both parties are happy with the change.

Further information about the running of the event is in the attached 
document - captains please ensure this is forwarded to all competing 
crews/coxes and their bank parties. Please pay careful attention to your 
marshalling times and locations - we are running a tight schedule and 
can't accommodate late crews. Most importantly, all crews should carry 
lights for the row home on every day of racing.

Emma Sprints 2018 is taking place on Sunday 18th November. Entries are now

Get keen as this is the first race of the Novice calendar and a great
introduction to racing. Racing this year will be as last year, with every
crew having at least two races. We anticipate a good turnout and with the
standard fancy dress, mince pies, and exciting racing, this event is not to

I'll be uploading the draw on the website as soon as possible after the
deadline, along with live results as the racing unfolds.



Standard safety rules apply: heel restraints in place, life jackets for

away any crew we deem 'unsafe' with no refund of entry fee.



Tickets are now on sale for Emma Cocktails that takes place on the evening
of Sunday 18th.  It's a great way for competitors to relax after a hard day

Firstly, minutes from the start-of-term captains' meeting are now on the
website and for your convenience have been attached to this email;
apologies for the delay. Comments sent to me after the meeting have been
incorporated as promised.

Secondly, we have had numerous complaints from town clubs recently about
boats without adequate lights. If you are boating within 15 minutes of
lighting down, or it is foggy (use common sense here, but if it is yellow
flagged for fog as it was last week, that is foggy enough to need lights)
you must have *bright* lights at both bow and stern. If visibility is poor
- as it is shortly after lighting down, or in fog - and you do not have
lights visible to other crews on the river, you are posing a danger both to
yourselves and to others.

Please could you ask your Early Morning Marshals to report all boats
without adequate lights - whether lacking them altogether, too dim, or
pointing the wrong way - so that we can take appropriate action.

On the subject of EMMs, a reminder that sheets should be uploaded via the
link on the website or, failing that, emailed to cucbc at cucbc.org by 5pm on
the day of the shift. If this isn't possible, I would appreciate a message
explaining why the sheets will be delayed, and when we can expect them. Any
other problems - including problems with filling your EMM slot - please
email in advance. Providing marshals is necessary for the safety of all
those on the river and good relations with those who live around us. It is
not optional.

The instructions for EMMs have been updated and can be found on the website
here <http://www.cucbc.org/marshals/instructions>. The rota for providing
EMMs is here <http://www.cucbc.org/marshals>. Many thanks to yesterday's
marshal for pointing out an inconsistency in the instructions. The major
difference is in the locations of the two marshals; those clubs providing
marshals this week (Fitzwilliam, Sidney Sussex, Caius, Clare Hall, Trinity
Hall and Murray Edwards), please make your marshals aware of the changes
and ask them to check the instructions before arriving for their shift.

A final note: the clocks go back this weekend, so from next week senior
boats will have over an hour on the river before novice boating time. In
the meantime, there will be a lot of traffic in the mornings. Please be
courteous, respectful and considerate: maintain a sensible distance from
other boats, do not overtake if you cannot see that it is safe to do so
(e.g. if it will result in you being on the wrong side of the river with
nowhere to slot back into the queue), and do not needlessly cause traffic
behind you by proceeding slower than you could reasonably do.

Christ's College Boat Club are going to have a training day away from
the Cam on Sunday 4th November. In order to complete our fleet of boats,
we need two more senior rowers (one male and one female) and a cox. 

In greater detail, we'll be heading to the Peterborough rowing lake to
make the most of a quiet, straight stretch of water. We'll benefit from
fantastic coaching and a queue-free lake. It promises to be a great day
out for the club (and for you!). We leave Cambridge on a coach at 7am
and return around 5pm.

Dear Captains,

I've been approached by a few captains/coaches over the last few weeks
asking if CUCBC are willing/able to reintroduce our old coxing meeting for
novices.

As a brief overview, there used to be a CUCBC meeting for interested novice
coxes and LBCs on the basics of the coxing role, some tips on coxing an
outing and rules of the Cam, and some pointers on how LBCs can more
effectively coach novice coxes (since most LBCs are rowers). It lapsed
since the role was largely being covered by individual college coxing
captains and wasn't terribly popular.

However, this is something we're quite happy to run again if there's
interest. It would be run on a strictly voluntary basis in terms of
attendance, and does not in any way replace the Clare Novices or Fairbairn
briefings. But if you feel this would be of use/interest to any of your
novices/LBCs, would you be able to drop me a reply with a rough indication
of how many (if any!) of your members might be interested? (Or if there are
any other topics you feel it would be useful to have addressed).
