This is because we also have to allow row-throughs for town clubs and house boats. 3) It will be done on a first come-first serve basis. 4) The deadline for requesting row-throughs is the Saturday the week before the regatta (17th November). If one of the first two boats sent out returns before 8:30, a third boat may push off when the first arrives back. So for example, if you had two senior boats push off at lighting down and both arrived back an hour later, two novice boats could then push off. Be aware though that we will be enforcing this strictly, partly by use of EMM reports which do not generally record returning crews, so if we see that a club sent three or four boats out in one morning we will be in contact. Every club should have a system in place to record outings, so we will expect you to be able to show that the first boat arrived home before the third pushed off. The two boats may be two VIIIs, two IVs, or a IV and an VIII. Additional small boats will not be counted. The towpath is a public right of way, and we have no more right to it than anyone else. - Please remind senior coxes to give novice crews plenty of space and to avoid taking chances to get through gaps. Just because some novice coxes may now appear quite competent, they don't necessarily remain so when presented with a senior crew barreling down on them. - Coaching from the bank before 07:30 anywhere upstream of the railway bridge (including the P&E) is still prohibited, and novice crews must still be accompanied by one bank party per crew. It's easy to let these things slip, so please pass them onto all of your coaches. - If any of your crews do get into trouble and get stuck up against a houseboat, please DO NOT push off the paintwork with oars. Either push off fenders, utilise rowers whose blades are clear, or use small sideways strokes to move away. Always apologise if you've bumped into a houseboat, even if no-one is visible. - EMM reports must be uploaded here or emailed to cucbc at cucbc.org by 5pm on the day of the report. Thanks to all clubs who've been on top of this. Thanks, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please check the attached timetable to see. Apologies to the small number of crews that asked for a very oversubscribed slot so I couldn't give you one, however there are still 2 slots available for less in demand spaces, first come first served. Let me know if you think you asked for a slot and haven't got what you expected, I have had a large number of emails asking to change times etc so may well have missed one or two. As there are now more boats, it's especially important you're on time for your slot to not delay things. MORNING OUTINGS are still permitted next Thursday and Friday (29th and 30th November) under normal CUCBC rules, including the use of the two boat rule. However, the river will be CLOSED from 8.40 am to allow crews time to marshal before the start of the morning divisions. Please ensure your crews are back in good time (8:30 am please)! In addition, the SECOND DRAFT of the START ORDER is now available to view on the Fairbairns website (https://jcbc.jesus.cam.ac.uk/old/fairbairns/start_order.phphttps://jcbc.jesus.cam.ac.uk/old/fairbairns/start_order.php). If you would like changes to your clubs starting position, please fill in the start order request form by SATURDAY 24TH NOVEMBER (https://goo.gl/forms/RfCUp9MQ4ySACQIY2). The final start order will be released on Sunday. Please remind your crews that boats 1-10 in each division must marshal 30 minutes before the division start time, while the rest must marshal 20 minutes beforehand. Many thanks for reading this email and best of luck to all crews taking part! URL: From felicity at cucbc.org Sun Nov 25 18:21:06 2018 From: felicity at cucbc.org (Felicity Parker) Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2018 18:21:06 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Reminders - lighting up, spinning, and rowing above Chesterton Message-ID: Dear all, There have been several reports recently of crews getting back to their boathouses after lighting up. College crews should not be on the water in the dark. If you were unavoidably delayed - if there was a major incident, such as a capsize or nasty collision that blocked the river, for example - we will be understanding, but you should plan your outings to get home before lighting up, taking into account levels of traffic and how fast your crew rows. I would also remind you that if there's a chance you may be on the water less than 15 minutes before lighting up, you should take lights. There were a high number of reports last week of crews spinning elsewhere than at the designated spinning zones, and of practising standing starts and high pressure/high rate rowing along Riverside and past the boathouses. Please don't. Again, if there are extenuating circumstances - for instance, if someone in the crew is ill or injured and needs to get back to the boathouse as soon as possible - then spinning in strange places is forgivable, but it shouldn't be done just because you don't fancy queuing for the spinning zone. Piecing above Chesterton, where there are houseboats, the river is narrow, and there are often boats (including novices, scullers and juniors) in the wrong part of the river, is dangerous and therefore forbidden. Except for Fairbairns and Christmas Head, of course. I'm sorry to seem such a killjoy, but the rules are there to keep all of us safe - you, and your novices, and your equipment, and everyone else on the river. Please behave. -- Felicity Parker CUCBC Honorary Secretary -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The forecast predicts winds of about 15-20 mph from a southerly direction throughout the day. Haven spoken to the JCBC Boatman, previous Fairbairn Secretaries and CUCBC, we think that winds of 15-20 mph are still row-able for most novice crews. However the standard of rowing is quite variable between colleges/crews. Therefore, we ask that each club risk assesses its own novice crews and their ability and decides for itself whether they are sufficiently competent to deal with the conditions forecast. If during marshalling we observe any crews clearly struggling to cope with the conditions, we will pull them from racing. This is not something we want to do so please make sure your coxes and crews are well prepared for the race and are safe and alert during racing. If conditions worsen throughout the day, I will be in contact with all marshals to let crews know of any cancellations. We will be giving all crews increased time gaps to try and avoid any situations with overtaking and increasing the number of marshals along the course. A full safety plan can be found attached. We advice crews taking part to have adequate (reasonably windproof) layers to marshal in, both before and after the race. We also want to reiterate that each novice crew must have at least one person to bank party and to help assist the crew when marshalling. There will be an assessment of the forecast on Wednesday afternoon and then, if needed, an inspection of the full course on Thursday morning before crews boat. All updates will be posted on the website, by email and on the Facebook group. In the event of any cancellation, the novice races will be rescheduled for the start of next term. The senior races will go ahead as planned on Friday. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me by email. As mentioned in my previous email, please ensure that the novices have sufficient layers for marshalling before and after the race. The weather is forecast to be wet as well as windy particularly for the first division of the day. If we see any crews during marshalling that look unable to complete the course safely we will have to pull them from the race. We envisage marshalling to be the most difficult as crews will be blown when stationary so ask that you brief your novice crews of the situation, reminding them to stay alert and focused. During the day we will continue to assess the situation and racing will be stopped if it becomes dangerous to continue. We wish all crews the best of luck with their races tomorrow and Friday. You can collect your race numbers from Jesus Boathouse from 07:30am onward.
