You should avoid harm to wildlife as a matter of course. Unless doing so would present more of a danger to human life than to animal life, you should easy and if necessary draw in blades or hold it up rather than hit animals, whether infants or adults. This is particularly relevant along Midsummer Common and at Cantabs Corner, where there are often large gatherings of adult swans. There is no good reason to be rowing at high rate around the outside of Ditton Corner; preferably, you should avoid piecing round the corner at all, though we accept that it is necessary to practise longer pieces on occasion. Wherever possible, avoid rowing or stopping between a swan and its nest; in particular, bear this in mind if queuing to cross over at the top of Plough Reach - you may need to leave space to allow the parents access to the nest. Swans are powerful and can be aggressive if provoked. One recently put a sizable hole in a single. Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course. As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a free dinner (including drinks) at a pub the week after Bumps. Furthermore, everyone who volunteers for umpiring before Monday 4th June will count towards their college's marshal allocation (if you sign up after this, please drop me an email!). You don't need to have umpired before. There will be a meeting for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps before so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave two divisions clear before your race and one after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: http://www.cucbc.org/mays/times The umpires briefing will be on Sunday 10th March, likely at 17:30 in Emmanuel College?s Lecture Theatre, but I?ll confirm that nearer the time. It'll last about half an hour, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. You can sign up here: http://www.cucbc.org/mays/umpires/signup If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at conor at cucbc.org Many thanks, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: From conor at cucbc.org Thu May 24 09:24:07 2018 From: conor at cucbc.org (Conor Burgess) Date: Thu, 24 May 2018 10:24:07 +0100 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Substitutions in Bumps Message-ID: Dear Captains, It's time for the termly reminder that all subs in all boats for any Bumps race (including and especially for the GoR) must be approved by the CUCBC Exec Committee. It's much easier if you get planned subs approved now, so we only have to deal with injury/illness subs during Bumps. A sub is anyone who isn't in the crew listed on the CUCBC website (or, in the case of last minute changes, someone who won't have trained much with the crew this term). If you're just swapping people between crews permanently (e.g. you've discovered a third boat rower makes your second boat go faster), you can do this on the CUCBC website up until the Getting On Race. In general, subs should meet the following requirements (I've added the rules inspiring this info to an appendix below): - should have been eligible to row in the boat they are subbing into, had they been entered as a member of the crew (i.e. bona fide student at that college, not rowing in another boat, no blues or first Mays colours below third boat/third division, whichever is lower) - subbing for someone who is genuinely ill or injured. Please note that academic commitments and planned absences from Cambridge will be scrutinised strictly, especially as almost all undergraduate academic commitments (barring a few vivas and economics exams) should have concluded by the time the races start. Family holidays are generally not considered to be a valid reason for requesting a substitution. - subs may not come from a higher boat, without exception (i.e. any sub which would give an unfair advantage to the crew they're subbing into, e.g. M1 to M2 or W3 to W4, even for the GoR, is expressly forbidden). - subs must not have been training with a town club outside college hours If you submit requests for subs in the following format (hat tip to Sidney from Lents 2016 for this example), we'll be able to approve them very quickly in most cases: *Sub 1* seat number, FIRSTNAME SURNAME *Race* Saturday division 4 *Boat* Sidney M2 *Reason* e.g. [injured shoulder | stomach bug | details of compulsory academic commitment] *Substitute* FIRSTNAME SURNAME - confirmation of student status at relevant college, confirmation not rowed in any other crew in this set of Bumps, confirmation not rowed with a town club this term, brief description of rowing history (especially relevant for coxing subs, who will also need to attend the coxes briefing and be competent enough to control the crew they're subbing into). Please ensure your requests are sent to BOTH committee at cucbc.org AND seniorcommittee at cucbc.org, and where possible group your requests into as few emails as possible. If need be, feel free to plead your case for why an exception should be made for your particular sub request, but we'll just fall back on the precedent set by previous decisions (that is why the Senior Committee exist after all). Please forward this email onto any LBCs / VCs / crew captains who might be making substitution requests. Many thanks, Conor *Appendix* *Rule 5 of 'Rules for Racing - General':* a That the crew which competes in the first heat of a CUCBC event (including the Getting on Race) be considered the official crew for the duration of that event. No change in the official crew shall be allowed, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which will usually be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That before the first heat, approval may be sought from the Executive Committee for a substitute in the first heat. If this is granted, the official crew should be provided in writing by the club concerned to the Executive Committee, and is expected to be the crew which has trained together that term. The official crew must be provided in advance of the first heat. c That substitution of rowers from crews in a higher position on the River to those in either a lower position or those competing in the Getting on Race shall not be permitted. *Rule 21 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races'* a That no person who has gained first Lent or May Colours or a Trial Cap may row or steer below the third division of the CUCBC Lent or May Races or below his/her College third crew, whichever is the lower, without the permission of the Hon. It is likely they will still be there this evening, so please exercise caution when rowing through Plough Reach this afternoon/evening (especially if at rate) so you don't disturb them. However, I'm aware not every college cox has signed up to the lists (especially newer coxes just starting this term). Could you pass it on to the appropriate members of your club please? Many thanks and best of luck with the last couple of weeks training, Isabel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Isabel Nimmo Date: 30 May 2018 at 13:50 Subject: May Bumps Cox Briefings To: coxes at lists.cucbc.org Dear Coxes, This is a reminder that the compulsory May Bumps cox briefings will be held on the 10th of June. There will be a refresher briefing for anyone who has coxed CUCBC* bumps before from 6:30-7:00pm. There will then be a full briefing for anyone who has not coxed CUCBC bumps from 7:00-7:45pm. Both briefings will be held in the Lecture Theatre in Emmanuel College. Coxes who have previously coxed CUCBC bumps who are unable to attend either briefing may send a suitable representative to sign in for them. This should be a senior cox from their club who undertakes to brief them before the start of racing on the 13th. Coxes who have not coxed CUCBC bumps before must attend the full briefing unless by prior arrangement with the CUCBC safety advisor (mark at cucbc.org). Best wishes, Isabel * There are a number of differences between CRA, CUCBC and the various flavours of Oxford bumps races, and so we do not consider them to be equivalent. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Later submissions will cause problems with setting the number of crews/spaces in the GoR so please be prompt. 1 form per club please, covering both men and women. No need to physically print/sign/scan the form, just complete in Word and send it back to me. Outings before 9.00 on weekdays and at any time on the weekend count as 1 outing, those taking place after 9.00 on weekdays may count as 1.5. Races (including the GoR itself for those taking part) count as 1 outing. Only outings in VIIIs count. I'm pragmatic about subs / crew changes / injuries etc., but please let me know about any coxes who have not personally managed 12 sessions and what their prior experience is. If you have a crew who will not have managed to complete 12 sessions before Friday, but think you have a compelling reason that they ought to be allowed to race, then please let me know. Having bad luck with the weather and difficulty scheduling outings during exam season is not a good reason though! Any questions, please let me know.
