From chair at cucbc.org Thu Mar 1 11:55:15 2018 From: chair at cucbc.org (Dr David Munday) Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2018 11:55:15 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Thursday RACING CANCELLED In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Dear All, We have assessed both river and towpath conditions mid morning today, and after careful discussion the CUs have decided that the combination of very low temperature, high wind and windchill, and frozen towpath surface, mean that racing cannot safely take place today, Thursday. Today's racing is therefore cancelled completely due to safety reasons, and in particular the risks of consequences that could rapidly become extremely serious in the event of significant delays or accidents during racing. We are continuing efforts to see if gritting the towpath is allowable or practicable, but it is already clear from the County Council's initial response that we would need formal permission to do so ourselves. We would caution that with a further very cold night forecast and subzero temperatures and snow on Friday in the daytime, no significant improvement in conditions currently looks likely, but we will again assess later today and tomorrow morning -- Dr David Munday, Chairman, Cambridge University Combined Boat Clubs -- Dr David Munday, Chairman, Cambridge University Combined Boat Clubs -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unfortunately the CUCBC committees do not have the person power to get anywhere near to achieving this, but we would be happy for colleges to have a go if they can. Please note however that this is not a guarantee that gritting the towpath will guarantee we can run races; the salt may not clear the towpath sufficiently, further snow and/or ice could cover it up and make it unsafe again, the river could freeze, or the air temperature / wind chill could be so cold we can't risk people sitting around stationary, etc. - you get the idea; it's not a guarantee, but it would certainly help improve the odds. If you do wish to help, rock salt can be purchased from many of the builders merchants in and around Cambridge. The wind is forecast to drop gradually from early afternoon. At this stage, therefore, we are CANCELLING W3/M3 for today, but at present will delay a decision on W2/M2 and W1/M1 until as late as we can following further inspection late morning/lunchtime. We will announce the decision on whether these divisions will run by 1300 AT THE LATEST. Should any racing go ahead, please be aware that bank parties will be limited to a maximum of 2, preferably 1, cyclists (any others who get to the start may only cycle back on the towpath AFTER the divsion has raced). We would also emphasise that racing crews and coxes should remind themselves very carefully about the safety aspects of bumping itself, and in the circumstances be prepared to use common sense to acknowledge inevitable bumps as early as possible, to help with subsequent river clearing. Should racing of these divisions go ahead, W2 will start at 1440, and the remaining divisions every 40 mins thereafter. Please can all crews be sure to marshall well on time (not least this will allow us to start each division as soon as we can when we have you all on the start, rather than havig to wait for sometimes several minutes with the higher divisions). Please also remember and apply the general advice about bringing and wearing when necessary dry warm clothing, hats, gloves. Thanks, and sorry for the frustration all this must be causing. Also, a VERY big thanks to all those who helped with towpath clearing, this was a very big effort, and without it the racing would not have been possible. Our intention at present is to run the full planned set of races tomorrow, ie all divisions. This will still be dependent on the continued forecast weather improvement, as well as the state of the towpath. So everyone is clear, we will announce a final confirmation of racing going ahead by 1100 tomorrow (Saturday) morning. Before then, you will probably have noticed that it is currently snowing and settling again. There already plans via the Facebook group to organise further towpath clearing from 0800 tomorrow morning (thanks again, and please be involved if you can and it is needed), and we will have inspected the towpath before 0800 to identify which parts require attention. Assuming all planned divisions do run tomorrow, then they will run to the normal timing schedule except, as with today's races, we will try to start each division as soon as we can after we have all crews on their stations (which also means that please can each subsequent division marshall promptly. Also, and again assuming the towpath condition is as good as today, we will return to 'normal' bank party numbers, ie max 4 per crew. And finally, a last reminder to all rowers and bank party members to bring enough warm clothing and to use it! So it should respond fairly well to scraping rather than the chipping needed last time. There are also nice clear sections in Ploufh reach - huge thanks again to this who cleared it Thursday/Friday! Most awkward spots are probably around the gut and stations 10-18. Air temperature is up which is softening it a bit and wind speed hugely down. We are still hoping to run all races subject to weather staying calm and the towpath being safe for bank parties. If anyone is planning to come down for towpath clearing, please take care on the roads which were a bit slippy this morning. The first race will be at 1240, and crews for that division should aim to be on their stations by 10 mintutes before that (1230), which will we hope enable us to complete the 'split' division without delaying the subsequent division. A couple of reminders: please can all crews marshall promptly for their divisions during the day. As yesterday, we aim to start each divsion as soon as practicable after all crews are on station, and to do so we need to know the next division is marshalled on time. It being Saturday, as well with the continuiing cold (but improved) conditions, we will not be considering rerows today (unless, possibly, we had to restart almost an entire division after a problem right at the start) We will provisionally return to a bank part size of a MAXIMUM of four cycles, but will monitor how well this works in the early divisions. Be aware that, whatever the bank party size permitted, any 'extra' cyclists MUST NOT cycle anywhere in the division and can only follow up the towpath at the end behind all racing crews. Infringements of this will be severely penalised as it is very clear this continues to be a safety issue in the current conditions. Please be aware that, although thaw is now happening, many roads and pavements, as well as boat house hards, may still be very icy, so take great care when coming to either boathouses or the river. And, finally, again wear and carry appropriate warm clothing. ThanksPete -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I cannot recommend this strongly enough. You can save or lose 10s of seconds by steering well/poorly which equates to dozens of places in the final finish order. The talk will start at 7:30pm in the Queen's Building Lecture Theatre in Emmanuel college. There should be signs from the p'lodge, but I'll aim to be around from ~7:15 to show people the way. The Talbott Cup is a young event that was created to provide increased racing opportunity for lower boats which are often disadvantaged by the Pembroke Regatta categorization system and the lower number of bumps divisions in Lents. Please continue reading if you could help FaT. We have a trailer and a towing vehicle, but we have been trying for the past weeks to find a driver but without success. Hence we are asking for your help! 1. In order to drive one needs to be over 25 ( insurance from the company that lends the trailers and the car). If any of you know somebody that would like to drive our trailer for some money on Saturday morning and back on Sunday that would be life saving! All costs covered. 2. Anybody with a car with a tow-bar willing again for some money to drive the trailer on Saturday and back on Sunday. Of course no need to be over 25, just the car with the tow-bar is the limiting factor. This would again help us so much and again all costs would be covered. 3. Any space on your trailer. We have one women boat and two men?s boats. Even if you have only one space left that would be again helpful as at least some of us could race. Again we are happy to cover some part of the cost for travelling there and back! If any of you could help us, then please contact me! The whole of First and Third would have you eternal gratitude! Message-ID: To anyone interested in helping with the Boat Race flags please read on/forward to your clubs... Best, Sam *In London on Saturday 24th March and want to help with the Boat Race flags?* Dear Cambridge college rowers and coxes, This is a request on behalf of the Boat Race organisers and timekeepers. In 2013 the Boat Race finish judge Ben Kent and I instituted a new system at the Boat Race finish post. The finishline flag, dropped as the first crew passes and then again for the second crew, is now repeated by a shadow flag-waver onto the Surrey bank, so that the timekeepers can see it from the following launches even if they are a long way behind a losing crew with a large margin. Thus started a new tradition of recruiting a college rower or cox to do it each year, alternately from the two universities, and this time since it's an even year we are looking for a Cambridge rowing person. No varsity squad connection is needed, but it needs to be someone who is a current CU *student*, and has rowed or coxed for their Cambridge college, preferably this season. This year it is also rather likely that we may ask for a second mirror-flag-waver to do the same job on the Mortlake bank at Hammersmith Bridge, because we have had issues with seeing the Hammersmith timer's flag lately. So: - Are you currently in the UK and thus quickly contactable for arrangements? - Are you already planning to be in London on Saturday 24th March 2018? - Would you be willing to change your plans and spend the Women's Boat Race (16:31) Osiris-Blondie race (16:46), Isis-Goldie race (17:01) and the Boat Race (17:32) helping by acting as the shadow flag-waver near Chiswick Bridge or, if we need a second, at Hammersmith Bridge? - Can you guarantee to turn up when asked to (you may need to allow substantial travel time on Boat Race day and there is typically a meeting for all flag-people somewhere near the Tideway in late morning)? - Can you keep your head under pressure? (the flag-waver will need to mirror the opposite flag, the official one, very precisely.) If yes to all of those.... - You would need to be free in London from some time earlier on race day (to be briefed) until after the end of the main boat race, which should be approx 6-6:15pm. Briefing and duty times will be organised by finish judge Ben Kent and may include the morning (tbc). - No expenses paid, I'm afraid, but you will have a grandstand view of the finish line for all four races and the satisfaction of knowing you helped the day go smoothly. The other 2018 finish flag-wavers will be Cambridge Blues, but we keep this job for a college boatie and you will be part of the team. Names submitted before noon on Sunday 18th March will be passed on by me to the race organisers, who will have the final say. I won't reply directly, but the person invited will be contacted by the race officials. If you don't hear back from anyone it's probably because someone else got there before you. If the top person can't help after all, we will work down the list. We had a huge response from Oxford college rowers last year and Cambridge rowers the year before, so don't bother emailing after the deadline. You must be a current student and we will prioritise those who answer promptly and have competed recently for their college. If you can answer yes to all the above questions and are interested, please email me back at rq at rowingservice.com, stating your name, mobile phone number, which college you rowed or coxed for and in which year(s). Thanks very much, Dr Rachel Quarrell Telegraph rowing correspondent and official Boat Race timekeeper. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
