Dear all,

The GoR will run as a single division next Friday 8th June. Crews should aim to be below Green Dragon footbridge by 17:30, and marshalling at Baitsbite by 17:50. We?ll run the men?s crews first, then the women?s, and hopefully have everyone done by 18:45.

There will be a single Men?s and Women?s hour from 19:00 to 20:00.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to Umpire the Mays so far. However, we could do with about 20 more people to make the rota nicer for everyone, so if you?re thinking of signing up and haven?t yet, or you know someone eligible who you think might be interested, now?s the time to sign up/encourage them to sign up!

Also, as some of you noticed, the briefing is not in March! It?ll be in the lecture theatre in Emma at 17:30 on Sunday 10th JUNE.

Due the X-Press head and associated river closure next Tuesday, there 
will be no Evening Hours on Tuesday 5th June. All boats will be allowed 
below Chesterton until 1800, when the river closure starts. After that,

row-through from X-Press, or those involved in the race, should be below 
Chesterton.

Good morning,

Conor Burgess has suggested that I contact you regarding the issue of 
the traffic congestion and need for parking in Fen Ditton during the 
event of the May Bumps.

Fen Ditton Recreation ground Trust/Parish Council have arranged for 
parking facilities to be made available to ease the congestion caused by 
the volume of traffic resulting from the followers of the Bumps.? This 
requires management which is done by volunteers from the village.? It 
would be extremely helpful if some volunteers could come forward from 
the colleges, whose event causes the problem, to assist with management 
of the traffic particularly on Saturday volume of people is at its 
greastest. - Just 30 minutes or an hour a time by a habdful of 
volunteers from the colleges would make all the difference and 
demonstrate to people of Fen Ditton that you care about the problem 
which is caused.

In addition a list of the colleges with hospitality tents on the Meadows 
would be helpful to direct drivers who are confused where to be - better 
still provision of easily seen? signage to the Meadows would be appreciated.

 Dear Captains,

The marshals' rota for the May Bumps has been updated for 2018 and can be
found here: www.cucbc.org/mays/marshals

The number of marshalling slots per club has been decided based on how many
boats were entered into Bumps, taking into account the number of umpires
that
each club has already provided.

If you cannot find anyone to marshal, please inform CUCBC. Likewise, if you
swap marshalling slots with another club, let us know.

There will be fines issued for failure to provide marshals, increasing with
each subsequent offence. Fines will also be issued for incompetent
marshals, so please make sure whoever you send knows what they're doing.
Ideally they would have competed in at least one set of Bumps before.

*Notes from the Umpires*

   - Practise starts at the Plough should follow normal navigation - i.e.
   you should cross at the Plough and do your start on the towpath side. This
   is important as we often have other river traffic heading upstream between
   divisions.
   - After bumping, coxes please take a moment to consider where you will
   clear to.
      - Take a look behind you to see which side chasing crews are on
      - Be decisive, once you've picked where you're going, give clear
      instructions to achieve it as quickly as possible
      - Clear to the most suitable part of the bank - this may not be the
      closest part of the bank - sometimes it is worth going a bit
further to get
      to a safer position, especially if you have space behind you.
      - Clearing on top of another crew is very rarely that most suitable
      part of the bank
   - A cox has been disqualified and a penalty bump awarded against their
   crew for rowing into a stationary boat at race pace. This is an extremely
   dangerous thing to do and will be santioned accordingly.
   - Once you have cleared, please keep your boat (and blades) under
   control, and do not allow your bows or stern to drift into the racing line.
   - Follow normal navigation when rowing home.
   - Spectators may not run alongside racing crews - anyone doing so will
   be counted as an extra cycling bank party and lead to fines for excessive
   bank party.
   - An iSolem white bike light has been handed in at control, please
   collect by Saturday if it is yours.

Dear coxes,

This week had seen far too many incidents involving boats colliding with
stationary ones. In two cases this week the incidents have been severe
enough to warrant us removing coxes from the river. Rudders have been
destroyed, coxes have taken blades and riggers to the back and rowers have
been hit by blades. Today a rower was hospitalised.

This is unacceptable.

As coxes, you should understand best of all that hitting stationary crews
is totally out of the question.  Some collisions have been major, as above,
some minor (blades clashing), but it's easy to see how a few inches
difference can turn a minor clash into a serious injury.

As cox, you are in sole charge and take responsibility for the movements of
your boat. We understand that Bumps is a busy and fast-changing
environment, however collisions with stationary boats will be dealt with as
the serious events they are.

It is necessary for all coxes during races to be aware of what is ahead, on
both sides and not just on the racing line.  You must pay attention not
just to the boat you are chasing.

I hope that we do not have any more examples of racing boats hitting
stationary ones.

NOTES FROM THE UMPIRES

 	* Another cox has been disqualified and a penalty bump awarded against
their crew for rowing into a stationary boat at race pace. This is an
unacceptably dangerous thing to do - do not row into stationary crews.
 	* Coxes: After you bump, clear the river quickly. Look behind for
approaching crews, decide which way to go and go for it.
 	* When racing, do not get tunnel vision - keep an eye out for
obstructions, crews clearing, etc.
 	* Row home sensibly - maintain normal navigation and do not attempt to
swap incompetent rowers into the cox's seat.
 	* Crews are permitted one standing start ONLY at the Plough. Standing
starts are not permitted at any other time.
 	* Bank parties: when not moving, please step off the towpath and keep
it clear - both after your crews have bumped out and on the way down to
the start.
 	* Captains: please make sure your club knows that supporters should
not run alongside the race. This is very dangerous and will be fined as
an excessive bank party.
 	* Tomorrow the towpath will be very busy, particularly for the later
divisions. Cyclists must watch where they are going and spectators
should be on the grass, not the path.
 	* Bank parties are strictly limited to 4. This includes boatmen,
college masters, alumni, VIPs, and anyone else. Crews with excessive
bank parties may not be allowed to start the race.

I have more dev-squad trialists than I have men's sculls. Do any of your
clubs have a scull rated around 75-80kg that we could arrange to borrow for
the next 4 weeks or so? We wouldn't need blades and we wouldn't need to
keep the scull in our boathouse, just to be able to use it during the
trailing sessions. Some remuneration could be arranged. If you are

Dear all,

Unfortunately it seems some reminders are in order, as we?ve received several complaints today alone. Please ensure these are passed on to any crews which may be training over the summer vacation.

In short, almost all of the CUCBC rules continue to apply outside of term time. The only big difference is that we do not update the flag.

- Novice coxes (by which we mean, any cox who cannot competently control the crew and its position on the river for the duration of the outing without assistance) must be accompanied by a bank party at all times. This applies to tubs as well as coxed IVs and VIIIs.
- Early morning noise: unnecessary noise before 07:30 is unacceptable. Cox box volume should be kept to a minimum and, upstream of the Railway Bridge, calls should be kept to a minimum and there should not be any coaching from the bank.
- Crews must follow correct navigation at all times; just because college rowing has gotten quieter, there are still plenty of town crews training throughout the day.
- If your crew comes across a coxless boat, and either you or they are in the wrong position, please shout out to them (?single/pair/double/quad, take a look!?). If they are in the wrong place, allow time to manoeuvre around each other safely and try not to judge them too harshly (steering can be hard when you?re looking the wrong way...). If you are in the wrong place, try to get back to where you should be, and a polite apology won?t go amiss!
- Coxes and coaches should assess conditions before going out, and a cox feel comfortable refusing to go out if they are not confident that they can control the crew in the conditions. The weather is obviously pretty ideal at the moment, but it can still be pretty windy over the summer (as it was this afternoon; this website is handy: https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/dtg/weather/daily-graph.cgi?today).
