We have so far in three years delivered festivals of inclusive golf, hockey, tennis, cycling and badminton. As a former cox I feel rowing, especially indoor rowing, a truly inclusive sport, should be part of the mix; and as a Cambridge graduate, I would like there to be an inclusive alternative to the Boat Race: Oxbridge, especially now, needs to be seen as more inclusive. This created the concept of an Inclusive Boat Race: a relay of 8 oars men and women (including disabled athletes) delivered via a social media platform ? a live stream of each crew, shown on a split screen with virtual boats racing down a virtual Thames (see attached mock-up). I have requested support from both Boat Clubs, but I am not requesting they help in any way in putting on the event nor are we asking for participation from any of their members. We are trying to secure the participants from alumni and college rowers. Oxford are raising it at their College Boat Clubs meeting. We have interest from potential athletes from both universities, including alumni, women, men and disabled athletes. I attach a note which can be forwarded that sets out the proposal in greater detail. Please would you share it amongst all your members and invite them to get involved. Thank you. I would firstly like to remind you that every boat club is a entitled to a free session on the tank, this can be obtained by contacting us via our website to request the session - www.cambridgerowingtank.co.uk. At any session on the tank, we require that there is at least one person present who has been through the induction process. The first set of inductions were run a few weeks ago and were attended by nearly 100 people! Clubs are welcome to send as many as you want to inductions, we recommend it is useful if at least your captains and coaches attend one of the sessions. If no one from your club has yet been to one, the next set of inductions is being run next week from Monday - Wednesday. You can sign up using the following link - https://doodle.com/poll/m4vq2dnuzu9xy3bh. You?ll note that the Monday session is already quite heavily subscribed, so you may get a better experience by attending one of the other sessions. As a reminder, the clubs who have not yet received an induction are Churchill, Clare Hall, Corpus, Fitz, Girton, Caius, Homerton, Jesus, Lucy Cav, Medwards, Robinson, St Eddies, Maggie and FaT. Don?t miss out on the opportunity to attend one of the inductions and also get a free tank session for your club! If you have any questions then please feel free to get in touch. If you would be interested in taking it off our hands then please email me at hwdv2 at cam.ac.uk. The erg is a Concept 2 Model C with ergonomic grip handles and we are able to offer a good discount. It is currently in excellent condition and were it not for lack of space, we would keep it. If you have any questions or wish to try out the machine, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I'm sure it won't be the last. I've had a few reports of crews that were either poorly lit, or entirely lacking lights, and I'd be very glad not to hear any more this term! For the first 15 minutes after lighting down (and the last 15 before lighting up), all crews are required to show a steady white light on their bow and stern. On overcast mornings in particular this makes it much easier for coxes to judge distances when rowing up behind queueing boats. Most of us (myself included) are guilty of letting our lights get a little too dim before changing batteries. When it's foggy though, bright lights are absolutely necessary because they are the first thing a cox of another boat will see. Imagine a men's VIII travelling at a decent pace - how much time do you think it takes from their cox seeing something ahead to calling for the boat to hold it up? What is their stopping distance when the call has been made? Would you rather that they saw your bright light from 70 / 80m away or your dim light from 30 / 40m? Or your unlit stern from 20m?! Captains - if you don't have a decent stock of spare batteries in the boathouse, buy some. Crews are a? lot more likely to go out with crap lights if that's all they have to hand. Coxes - you're the first thing that a crew approaching from behind will hit. If you have a healthy sense of self-preservation, take responsibility for checking at the start of every outing that your lights (if you need them) are bright. When visibility is poor please take extra care to keep a good lookout. If there's dense fog and you're not comfortable with how much you can see, talk to your coach to? let them know how you're getting on and to decide between you what you can safely and usefully do in the rest of the outing. Finally, be extremely careful with overtaking! Any questions, let me know... Bled is home to the Slovenian national team and features an Olympic standard rowing centre on the shores of Lake Bled, which has a multi-lane 2km rowing course. The 2017 World Rowing Masters Regatta was held there last year. MBC has organised a training camp to Bled in April and have negotiated a deal with the International Rowing Centre there, as well as accommodation a short distance from the centre, and we can now offer this deal to other Cambridge college clubs for the Easter vacation. Full use of the rowing centre for 20 athletes (excluding coxes and coaches), including boat and launch hire and use of the rowing machines and changing facilities, would cost around ?3500 for a full week. Accommodation in a large house (for a maximum of 23 people) a short walk from the centre would cost around ?1500 for a week. This represents amazing value for money - this camp would cost significantly less per person than the recent University Boat Clubs camp to Banyoles. Bled is an easy half hour road or rail journey from Slovenia Ljubljana airport, with daily flights direct from Stansted. If you are interested in taking advantage of this amazing opportunity, please contact Dave Crawley (davecrawley at gmail.com), who owns the house in Bled. If you have any questions about the camp, please feel free to ask me or him. Apologies for that. However, it is extremely important for crews (coxes and coaches in particular) to remain vigilant and constantly aware of their ability to cope with the conditions. If a crew starts struggling - even if the flag allowed them to go out - they should be cutting short their outing and returning to the boathouse as safely as possible. The coach should be aiding the cox in getting their crew back safely if this is the case. As is clearly stated on the flag page: *N.B. Where the Flag permits a given crew to boat (i.e. green or yellow flag), the final decision lies with the cox and coach as to whether that crew is able to handle the conditions and thus whether boating is appropriate.* That decision does not stop as soon as you've pushed off; you must re-assess continuously throughout the course of the outing. We will have to start fining crews and then imposing training bans on crews which do not demonstrate sensible decision making in this regard.
