Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course. As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a free dinner (including drinks) at a pub the week after Bumps. Furthermore, everyone who volunteers for umpiring before Monday 19th Feb will count towards their college's marshal allocation (if you sign up after this, please drop me an email!). You don't need to have umpired before. There will be a meeting for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps before so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave two divisions clear before your race and one after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: http://www.cucbc.org/lents/times The umpires briefing will be on Sunday 25th February, time and location TBC. It'll last about half an hour, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. You can sign up here: http://www.cucbc.org/lents/umpires/signup If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at conor at cucbc.org Many thanks, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You should ask crews to try to free their schedules between 13:00 and 17:00 - unless we have quite a few scratches we?ll need to run three divisions, likely at 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. Finally, the scratch deadlines are as follows: The deadline for scratching completely for a full refund is Wednesday 21st Feb at 17:00. The deadline for scratching completely for a half refund is Thursday 22nd Feb at 17:00. If you would like to switch a crew to racing for time only, you are eligible for a half refund so long as you tell us by Thursday 22nd Feb at 17:00. It's much easier if you get planned subs approved now, so we only have to deal with injury/illness subs during Bumps. A sub is anyone who isn't in the crew listed on the CUCBC website (or, in the case of last minute changes, someone who won't have trained much with the crew this term). In general, subs should meet the following requirements (I've added the rules inspiring this info to an appendix below): - should have been eligible to row in the boat they are subbing into, had they been entered as a member of the crew (i.e. bona fide student at that college, not rowing in another boat, no blues or first Mays colours below third boat/third division, whichever is lower) - subbing for someone who is genuinely ill or injured. Please note that academic commitments and planned absences from Cambridge will be scrutinised strictly, and only approved if genuinely immovable and compulsory (if planned early, supervisions, labs, and seminars are normally movable or at least swap-able - make some non-rowing friends...). - subs may not come from a higher boat, without exception (i.e. any sub which would give an unfair advantage to the crew they're subbing into, e.g. M1 to M2 or W3 to W4, even for the GoR, is expressly forbidden). - subs must not have been training with a town club outside college hours If you submit requests for subs in the following format (hat tip to Sidney from Lents 2016 for this example), we'll be able to approve them very quickly in most cases: *Sub 1* seat number, FIRSTNAME SURNAME *Race* Saturday division 4 *Boat* Sidney M2 *Reason* e.g. [injured shoulder | stomach bug | details of compulsory academic commitment] *Substitute* FIRSTNAME SURNAME - confirmation of student status at relevant college, confirmation not rowed in any other crew in this set of Bumps, confirmation not rowed with a town club this term, brief description of rowing history (especially relevant for coxing subs, who will also need to attend the coxes briefing and be competent enough to control the crew they're subbing into). Please ensure your requests are sent to BOTH committee at cucbc.org AND seniorcommittee at cucbc.org, and where possible group your requests into as few emails as possible. If need be, feel free to plead your case for why an exception should be made for your particular sub request, but we'll just fall back on the precedent set by previous decisions (that is why the Senior Committee exist after all). Many thanks, Conor *Appendix* *Rule 5 of 'Rules for Racing - General':* a That the crew which competes in the first heat of a CUCBC event (including the Getting on Race) be considered the official crew for the duration of that event. No change in the official crew shall be allowed, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which will usually be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That before the first heat, approval may be sought from the Executive Committee for a substitute in the first heat. If this is granted, the official crew should be provided in writing by the club concerned to the Executive Committee, and is expected to be the crew which has trained together that term. The official crew must be provided in advance of the first heat. c That substitution of rowers from crews in a higher position on the River to those in either a lower position or those competing in the Getting on Race shall not be permitted. *Rule 21 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races'* a That no person who has gained first Lent or May Colours or a Trial Cap may row or steer below the third division of the CUCBC Lent or May Races or below his/her College third crew, whichever is the lower, without the permission of the Hon. Secretaries. This shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That no person who has rowed in, steered or been a reserve for any of the CUBC, CUWBC or CULRC crews may row below his/her College third May Boat without the permission of the Hon. Secretaries, which shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. *Rule 22 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races'* a That, with the exception of the sandwich boats, no-one may row or steer in more than one division in one day, and that no-one who has rowed in a particular crew in the races may then row in another crew, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness. b That anyone may row in one division and steer in another on the same day. *Rule 28 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races'* That no-one who has rowed or steered in a successful boat in the Getting-On Race row or steer respectively in a higher boat during the races which follow, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness of someone in a higher boat. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We will aim to let all crews do one practice start under the railway bridge at the start of their first division. Race starts further down the reach or in other divisions will be subject to marshals' permission and dependent on possible delays and weather. Similarly to last year, we will be having portaloos next to the car park by the P&E at the end of the tow path. If a racing crew wishes to use them, we ask that they inform a marshal as soon as possible. Unless they have a rest division, they will be asked by marshals at the finish line to bank immediately on the tow path side (unless they lose and wish to row home immediately). We would provisionally also like to offer M3, W3 and MAlum category crews racing in Division 2 (8:30am) and Division 10 (13:00) a chance to race a second time if they lose their race. For the men's division for example: all 8 crews will race once; everyone will spin and row back downstream; the winning crews will race following the draw, and the losing crews will be paired off at the marshals discretion to race only once more. In the women's draw the same - this should give the less experienced crews more racing practice. In the MAlum category the crews losing races 10.3 and 10.4 will get the chance to race against each other in Division 11 (13:30). All of this is at our discretion, and will be dependent on division delays and weather. If you wish to opt-out, please inform me by email before Friday. Please understand that this is not possible for the crews which lose the races in Division 1 and Division 9 due to odd numbers. Crews competing in the M1 and W1 categories are advised to bring lights. Please read the marshalling instructions and rules. Short bursts of the whistle by a race marshal indicate the number of warnings to crew about straying off station, and at 3 warnings or any more significant offense a crew will be considered for disqualification at the end of a race. A continuous whistle is the emergency signal to stop rowing. Should a crew gain a significant advantage (more than length), we ask that coxes stay on station and do not take the racing line or risk disqualification. Most crews will be asked to marshal at Chesterton and then the Plough Reach, but if a crew arrives early/on-time to their first division or has a rest division (after the first race in some categories) they may be asked to marshal at the Railway Bridge. During the race they must pull in or bury their blades to not impede racing crews. Please contact me as soon as possible if you have any questions, and stay up to date on the day of the regatta @pemregatta [1] or on the regatta website [2] and facebook page [3]. We will aim to update results live on the website on the day. I've attached the message which went round the coxes list below, but could I please ask you to pass it on to any of your coxes racing on Tideway this year? I'd especially recommend it to any cox who has not raced on Tideway before, since the stream and the scale of the race/river present problems which are very unlike racing on Cam. Purely personally, I've raced there somewhere over thirty times, and i still don't feel as comfortable as I'd like about steering the optimal line. Best of luck for the last week of training ahead of Lents, Isabel ------------------------- Dear coxes, This is only really of interest to those college crews planning to race WEHoRR or ManHoRR this year. Sophie Shapter has kindly agreed to give a presentation on steering, racing and navigating on the Tideway in Emmanuel college at 7:30pm on Tuesday the 6th of March (i.e. the Tuesday after Lent bumps). I've attached a quick note from Sophie below. Speaking personally, I really can't recommend this enough. Racing on the Tideway is a fantastic experience, but utterly unlike racing on-Cam, and steering well to take advantage of the stream can reduce your time by tens of seconds. Please do consider sticking it in your diaries. Best of luck for the last week of training ahead of Lents, and hope to see many of you there, Isabel, CUCBC Committee --------------------- I'm Sophie Shapter, I've been coxing and coaching for almost 10 years now (probably too long) and up until this year, all my experience has been on the Tideway. I started coxing aged 13 at school when my coach told me I was small, pointed to the coxes seat and said "sit there". So I did, and have never looked back since (not literally, it's always good to look behind you once in a while). After a couple of years coxing at school, my coach sent me to Thames Rowing Club, where I started to cox the senior men. This was an awesome experience as I got to compete at a high club level at events like Men's Head and Henley from the age of 16. By the time I left school I decided I'd had enough of full time coxing and started to coach the junior squad at multiple clubs along the Tideway. Meanwhile I kept up my coxing by subbing into crews here there and everywhere for training and racing whenever needed. After three years of coaching my hunger to cox came back and I joined Tideway Scullers full time again, and now here I am at Cambridge coxing for CUWBC, heading for the Boat Race in a few weeks time. I never thought I'd ever get the opportunity to do The Boat Race, and it's been a dream of mine since the age of 15, so it's mad to think the dream will come true. Anyway, I'm going to be talking about coxing on the Tideway for those all important head races coming up, as well as how to structure a race plan, marshalling, and anything else that might be of interest to people. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Later submissions will cause problems with setting the number of crews/spaces in the GoR so please be prompt. 1 form per club please, covering both men and women. Outings before 9.00 on weekdays and at any time on the weekend count as 1 outing, those taking place after 9.00 on weekdays may count as 1.5. Races (including the GoR itself for those taking part) count as 1 outing, including the midweek Robinson Head. Only outings in VIIIs count. I'm pragmatic about subs / crew changes / injuries etc., but please let me know about any coxes who have not personally managed 12 sessions and what their prior experience is. If you have a crew who has not managed to complete 12 sessions before Friday but think you have a compelling reason that they ought to be allowed to race then please let me know. The Talbott Cup is a young event that was created to provide increased racing opportunity for lower boats which are often disadvantaged by the Pembroke Regatta categorization system and the lower number of bumps divisions in Lents. After the success of last year?s event, the race will be run on Tuesday 13th March, from 2pm. Entries are open to boats no higher than M3s/W2s, although exceptional entries (M2s of predominately ex-novices) may be permitted on a case-by- case basis. The regatta is, however, intended for lower boats? rowers and as such we ask that no rower enter who has competed in any Bumps in an M1, M2 or W1. The race will be run in a similar style to Pembroke Regatta with divisions for W2, M3, W3 and M4. Tankards will be awarded to crews winning any event with at least 4 entries. Entries can be made by the link below at the cost of ?45 per crew (closing at midnight ending Sunday 4th March): https://goo.gl/forms/UiLgsVlc1wU3P2d52 The rules of the regatta are also accessible at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Nvql1B4PGbVTqiA9XGVmbTB-J_RRBJ0v/view?usp=s haring If you have any questions, please let me know (talbottcup at firstandthird.org ). Best wishes, Conor ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: 'PETER CONVEY' via committee Date: 26 February 2018 at 16:15 Subject: Some common sense reminders from the CUs for this week To: CUCBC Coxes , CUCBC Captains Cc: CUCBC Senior Committee , CUCBC Committee < committee at cucbc.org> Dear all I am sure you are very well aware of the prevailing weather and forecast for this week. There will be a number of factors over the week that crews will need to be prepared for. The week will be chronically cold, with temperatures only just positive, and possibly below zero on some days. There may also be increasing winds later in the week, which will compound risks of wind chill. Any situation where individuals are wet will also compound this risk. At present there is no indication that conditions will restrict our ability to run the races as planned. We will be monitoring conditions closely before and during racing each day, the main factor that might at present lead to cancellation of racing being ice formation overnight, in which case a notice will be sent out. Remembering a few practical points will help things to run smoothly: - make sure all your crew have appropriate extra warm and dry kit with them to keep warm while waiting at any point (marshallling, before start, waiting for any delays after racing, paddling home), and make sure they wear it when needed (it doesn't achieve anything in a rucksac!) - bank parties could sensibly carry hot drinks in flasks, as well as emergency space blankets - please make sure all crews marshall on time and in the correct positions, and paddle down to start correctly and safely; any delays to the process will only expose everyone to the cold for longer - please inform an official rapidly if it becomes apparent a crew member is showing any signs of developing problems with the cold (hypothermia) In conditions such as expected, it is particularly important that crews and coxes follow all the normal safety and practical rules around bumping, and pay particular attention to safe and rapid clearing after bumps take place. This as ever is important to reduce the possibility of major incidents, both in terms of the potential for injury, and of holding up multiple following crews. As normal, in such situations, we will only run rerows when absolutely necessary, and decisions will inevitably have to take the prevailing conditions into account. Good luck to all racing! Today's results can be found here: http://www.cucbc.org/lents Notes from the Umpires Tomorrow is forecast to be even colder than today, please bring lots of kit to keep warm! Know where your finish is. In particular M4/W4 should not be racing after the railway bridge. Crews should remember that they should not expect there to be an umpire at the finish telling them when to wind it down unless they are genuinely close to making or being bumped. All coxes are reminded that lifejackets MUST be outside your outermost layer. They will not do you any good if they auto-inflate under a coat; and quite possibly make it very difficult to swim. A reminder to all cyclists (bank parties, umpires and otherwise) that commuters use the towpath as well - please be wary of them, particularly in the last division of the day. Fines Caius M4 - Dropped bung, no advantage - ?15 Caius M2 - Public urination - ?85 Churchill M2 - Rowing back after the division to fetch dropped blade - Extra bank pass available for suitably trained large dog to fetch next time Clare Hall M1 - Dropped bung, no advantage - ?15 Corpus Christi W1 - Foul language - warning; not acceptable even when directed at your own crew Corpus Christi W1 - Incompetent marshalling - ?20 Darwin W2 - Forgot bung, no advantage - ?15 Darwin W1 - Pulling into station facing the lock - Back it down for Thursday's race. First and Third M3 - Dropped bung, no advantage - ?15 Hughes Hall W1 - Excessive greenery - Plant sufficient trees to restore balance to the planet Jesus W3 - Failure to clear - ?30 Jesus M3 - Dropped bung, no advantage - ?15 King's M2 - Leaving a snapped blade floating in the river for the umpires to play hook-a-duck with - Provide further games for the umpires after each day's racing Lady Margaret W3 - Cox's early celebration - ?20 Lady Margaret W3 - Cox's failure to instruct crew to hold it up - ?20 Lucy Cavendish W2 - No lifejacket - ?50 Lucy Cavendish W2 - Dropped bung, no advantage - ?15 Murray Edwards W2 - Singing in boat - prepare an opera for Saturday's race Selwyn W1 - Failure to row into a stationary crew - cox to come and claim a chocolate-based prize from control Trinity Hall W2 - Celebrating before clearing - ?30 Wolfson M1 - Illegal practice start - ?50 All fines can be appealed by e-mailing Dan Wilkins, CUCBC Senior Treasurer (seniortreasurer at cucbc.org), within 48 hours of this email being sent. Current temperatures are well below zero, with -5 or lower forecast overnight, with tomorrow not likely to get above freezing. There is also the possibility of further snow. Realistically this means that conditions on the towpath are unlikely to improve between now and scheduled racing tomorrow, and there is also a reasonable chance of ice forming on the river itself. None of CUCBC, the Cam Conservators or the County Council are able to grit the towpath and further snow would leave gritting at this stage unlikely to make a difference anyway. We will inspect the river and towpath tomorrow, initially at 11.00 and also prior to the scheduled start of racing. We will keep captains and clubs updated as to the possibility of racing tomorrow, and will circulate a final decision on Thursday's racing by 1.00 at the latest (i.e. before M4/W4 crews boat). We will similarly make daily decisions for the remainder of the week. The Chief Umpires have considered whether there are any alternative arrangements that would allow us to proceed with racing some, if not all, divisions. In particular we have considered lining the bank with static umpires with a very limited number of CUs/DCUs accommpanying each decision on bikes. We have come to the conclusion that within the current constraints of weather, established racing practice and manpower this would not provide an environment where we could effectively deal with the full range of plausible racing incidents. While our discussions are ongoing, the current thinking is that we will either run a conventional Bumps race, or not run any race at all. Further updates will follow tomorrow morning and later in the week. Regards, Mark Jacobs CUCBC Safety Advisor and Deputy Chief Umpire
