From mark at cucbc.org Fri Jun 2 23:01:53 2017 From: mark at cucbc.org (Mark Jacobs) Date: Sat, 3 Jun 2017 00:01:53 +0100 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] 12 Outing Declarations for May Bumps 2017 In-Reply-To: <425cc331-b92d-bcbe-bc33-f2689a13b317@cucbc.org> References: <425cc331-b92d-bcbe-bc33-f2689a13b317@cucbc.org> Message-ID: <56d0aca5-b86f-1114-d42e-1eb43f62e1cb@cucbc.org> Dear Captains, Attached is the 12-outing declaration form for the May Bumps 2017. Please check the outing logs for each of your crews and return the declaration to me by Wednesday 7th June. This deadline is to allow us to fix the start order as soon as the Getting On race has finished - even if you don't have any crews entered into the GOR we need to know how many slots are available for qualifying crews. Where you have been running a squad system for a significant part of the term rather than fixed crews please contact me if you do not meet the 12 outing requirement. We understand that subs are sometime required at short notice for illness/injury/absence and these are generally acceptable without specific notice to me - please contact me if you are proposing to sub in a cox who has not been coxing this term and does not have prior Bumps experience as a cox. Weekday outings after 9.00 count as 1.5 outings for the purpose of the 12 outing rule. Early morning and weekend outings count as 1, as do races. The GOR may be counted as one of the 12 for those crews taking part. If you have a crew who fail to meet the required 12 outing threshold, feel free to contact me before scratching them if you think there are grounds for me to allow them to race. Any crew not fulfilling the 12 outing requirement may race for time only in the GOR, and will be eligible for a half refund. Forms may be filled in electronically and emailed back - there's no need to print / sign / scan as it takes up more of your time and only clogs up my inbox! Finally, please remember that the rules for coxes not attending the pre-Bumps briefing have changed in line with the previous Captains' meeting. Senior coxes may now be represented by another cox from your club (who may also be there as the cox of their own crew) - rowers are no longer acceptable representatives. Novice coxes (i.e. those who have not competed in Bumps before as a cox) may be absent only by prior agreement - email me if this applies to anyone in your club. Please be sensible when it comes to attendance - I do not want the briefing to be delivered to just 30 coxes, each representing the whole of their club! Any questions, let me know. It's much easier if you get planned subs approved now, so we only have to deal with injury/illness subs during Bumps. A sub is anyone who isn't in the crew listed on the CUCBC website (or, in the case of last minute changes, someone who won't have trained much with the crew this term). In general, subs should meet the following requirements (I've added the rules inspiring this info to an appendix below): - should have been eligible to row in the boat they are subbing into, had they been entered as a member of the crew (i.e. bona fide student at that college, not rowing in another boat, no blues or first Mays colours below third boat/third division, whichever is lower) - subbing for someone who is genuinely ill or injured. Please note that academic commitments and planned absences from Cambridge will be scrutinised much more strictly than in the Lents. - subs may not come from a higher boat, without exception (i.e. any sub which would give an unfair advantage to the crew they're subbing into, e.g. M1 to M2 or W3 to W4, even for the GoR, is expressly forbidden). - subs must not have been training with a town club outside college hours If you submit requests for subs in the following format (hat tip to Sidney from Lents 2016 for this example), we'll be able to approve them very quickly in most cases: Sub 1 seat number, FIRSTNAME SURNAME Race Saturday division 4 Boat Sidney M2 Reason e.g. [injured shoulder | stomach bug | someone has quit rowing] Substitute?FIRSTNAME SURNAME - confirmation of student status at relevant college, confirmation not rowed in any other crew in this set of Bumps, confirmation not rowed with a town club this term, brief description of rowing history Please ensure your requests are sent to BOTH committee at cucbc.org AND seniorcommittee at cucbc.org If need be, feel free to plead your case for why an exception should be made for your particular sub request, but we'll just fall back on the precedent set by previous decisions (that is why the Senior Committee exist after all). Many thanks, Conor Appendix Rule 5 of 'Rules for Racing - General': a That the crew which competes in the first heat of a CUCBC event (including the Getting on Race) be considered the official crew for the duration of that event. No change in the official crew shall be allowed, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which will usually be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That before the first heat, approval may be sought from the Executive Committee for a substitute in the first heat. If this is granted, the official crew should be provided in writing by the club concerned to the Executive Committee, and is expected to be the crew which has trained together that term. The official crew must be provided in advance of the first heat. c That substitution of rowers from crews in a higher position on the River to those in either a lower position or those competing in the Getting on Race shall not be permitted. Rule 21 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' a That no person who has gained first Lent or May Colours or a Trial Cap may row or steer below the third division of the CUCBC Lent or May Races or below his/her College third crew, whichever is the lower, without the permission of the Hon.?Secretaries. This shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That no person who has rowed in, steered or been a reserve for any of the CUBC, CUWBC or CULRC crews may row below his/her College third May Boat without the permission of the Hon.?Secretaries, which shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. Rule 22 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' a That, with the exception of the sandwich boats, no-one may row or steer in more than one division in one day, and that no-one who has rowed in a particular crew in the races may then row in another crew, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness. b That anyone may row in one division and steer in another on the same day. Rule 28 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' That no-one who has rowed or steered in a successful boat in the Getting-On Race row or steer respectively in a higher boat during the races which follow, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness of someone in a higher boat. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The results from Wednesday?s racing are now available online at www.cucbc.org/mays/results . Notes from the Umpires After bumping (or having been bumped) coxes should take a moment to think about where they are clearing to. Look over your shoulder for oncoming crews then decide where you can safely clear to in the time available before the next crew reaches you. If possible, please clear to the towpath side and to the outside of corners but this is not always possible. Make sure your boat and blades are clear and that racing crews can safely pass you. Clear the river as quickly as possible. Do not celebrate (and coxes, do not allow your crew to celebrate) before you are safely pulled in the bank and at no risk of drifting back into the racing line. When rowing home, DO NOT proceed above the Railway Bridge until you are instructed to do so. Even if there is no marshal present when you arrive, you must wait until you have been instructed you can row home to ensure that crews rowing to the start from the marshalling area can cross, unimpeded, onto the navigation. Please make sure you arrive to marshal on time. You must be pulled in to your station in the marshalling area by the start time of the previous division (since the river will need to be clear for that division to race through). Message-ID: Dear Captains, I?d like to wish you all the best of luck for Mays, and would ask that you circulate the following to your members, particularly those who are completing their studies this summer and planning to stay in Cambridge. Thank you! Chesterton Rowing Club is looking for coxes and experienced male rowers to join our friendly club. We are serious about competing but don?t take ourselves too seriously - pints are more common than protein shakes after our outings. Our M1 schedule has three outings a week and our M2 two, with some bonus outings in the run up to bumps. As a small club, there?s very little between you and joining our best boats. Our very reasonable membership fees include use of our boats and ergs. You?d be very welcome to come down for a couple of trial outings before joining up. Our membership year runs until December, so you?re not going to be paying for a whole year if you join up. Please contact menscaptain at chestertonrowingclub.org or get in touch via Facebook (search for Chesterton Rowing Club). You can find more details at http://www.chestertonrowingclub.org/membership/ Currently our women?s rowing side is oversubscribed, but do check in with us later in the year if you?re interested. We are, however, very keen to hear from any coxes. Best regards, Mike Prior-Jones Club Captain, Chesterton RC -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The results from Thursday's racing are now available online at www.cucbc.org/mays/results . Notes from the Umpires Coxes - when you?ve bumped, please look over your shoulder before deciding where to clear. When you?ve bumped out, do not clear into another crew - row on (at firm pressure if need be) to reach a section of bank which is clear. Bank party size is strictly limited to four - the Umpires will be clamping down on this tomorrow as we expect the towpath to be very busy. If you?re paddling home after bumping out, you MUST stop below the Railway Bridge and wait for the previous division to finish pushing off before you proceed home (someone will tell you when you can do so). If no one is there, do not assume it is ok to continue, you must still stop. Bank parties must not impede umpires, and must listen to umpires asking them to give way on one side or the other. Fines Fines may be appealed by e-mailing Dr Dan Wilkins, CUCBC Senior Treasurer (seniortreasurer at cucbc.org ) within 48 hours of this e-mail. We?ve been running a development group this term, but we?re conscious we haven?t been able to meet everyone interested in trialling next season. If you have any rowers in your clubs keen to trial they should contact our assistant coach, Richard Chambers, to register their interest. The season will start on the 4th of September, so anybody interested in trialling should be talking to our coaches to get an idea of the sort of training they should do over the summer. We?d encourage anyone interested to give it a go, obviously there are standards that have to be met and people will be cut, but many rowers who?ve learnt to row at their colleges have gone on to make crews in the past few years. I?d appreciate you circulating this message amongst your members. If you have any questions about the process please don?t hesitate to contact Richard (richard at cubc.org.uk ) or me (hugoramambason at gmail.com ).
