This comes, in part, from conversations with some of you about what CUCBC could do to better support cox development. It's not the ideal solution, but I hope will make some use of the goodwill and time of various former college coxes who are still in Cambridge. I'm not at all sure whether all coxes (especially recent ex-novices) will be on the coxes mailing list, so please pass it on to anyone you think could benefit from it. If this proves useful, it's certainly something I'd like to see refined and continued later in the year. While I've discussed this with a small number of captains, if any of you have thoughts on improvements to this concept, or even better ideas, please do get in touch! All the best, Robert -------------- Dear coxes list, CUCBC will be hosting a relatively informal event this Monday for any college coxes looking to try and improve their coxing this term. We'll be meeting at 7pm in the Divinity School Main Lecture Theatre. Ideally, every cox would receive individual coaching, the same way most rowers do, but from talking to various clubs over the last few months most simply don't have enough experienced coxes with sufficient spare time to make that a reality. (Kudos to the clubs which do - you lucky so and sos.) In place of that (slightly impractical) ideal, some of the more experienced former college coxes still in Cambridge have kindly agreed to speak briefly about an aspect of coxing which they think will help improve coxing on the Cam. After that, we'll aim to break into smaller groups for a much less structured chat. The idea behind that chat is to provide a venue for less experienced coxes to raise any issue they're looking for advice on or having problems with. While that's never going to be as good as direct one-to-one attention on the water, it will provide an opportunity to learn from the experiences (and mistakes) of others. The session is planned as pretty informal, so if people need to run at any stage, feel free. Otherwise, we'll stay and chat as long as there are people who want to. Again, from talking to various captains last term, this is primarily aimed at less experienced coxes (in their first year or two or coxing), but is open to anyone who wants to come along. My company is planning to take part in the Great River Race this September. It is a 22 mile race on the Thames for "traditional style" boats, basically no sliding seats. We have raced in this event several times in the past but this year we are planning to build our own boat and I'm looking for old rowing boats to use as the basis of our design, most likely building them into a double-hulled, 16-oar beast. I know generally boats are usually in short supply but also that rack space is even more scarce. If any of your clubs have boats lying around that are currently un-rowable, broken, full of holes or just old and you want them out of the way, I would be interested in buying them from you for our project. If you have any such boats available then I would be extremely grateful if you would get in touch. I'm most interested in 8s but 4s, quads, anything bigger than a single, would also be worth a look at. I'm not fussed about seaworthiness as we have the skilled people here to make even quite major repairs, and it will be quicker for us to do that than build from scratch. If you don't currently have anything available then please still bear me in mind if you total a boat in Lents! We are currently looking for coxes for our women?s squad, made up of around 20 rowers (though this number expands as the weather gets better!). If you're not familiar with X-Press, we're one of the smaller town clubs, focussing exclusively on adult rowing, and with active sweep and sculling programs. As a small club, we're also pretty sociable - with regular post-outing coffees and pub- types, and semi-regular club social events. The women's squad has a big mix of age ranges (early 20s to late 50s), nationalities and backgrounds, including quite a number of ex-college rowers. Our W1 crew is third on the river in town Bumps, having moved up 8 places in the past 2 years. We are currently in training for WeHORR and are probably looking for a cox for that race ? and beyond. Later in the year, we are hoping to take the crew to Women?s Henley as well as other off-Cam and International regattas, and of course to maintain or improve our place in town Bumps! Our W2 crew won blades in Bumps last year, and also compete regularly both on- and off-Cam. They may also enter a crew for WeHORR and are potentially looking at racing in the Masters National Championships later in the year. Both crews train on the water three times a week (evenings and weekends ? so generally no early mornings and hopefully no clashes with uni teaching) so if you?re interested in coxing a competitive crew without the same level of commitment as college rowing, please do get in touch! We do have a number of regular coxes for both crews, but so if you can't commit to the full training regime, we'd still love to hear from you! Shuold you require any other information, please get back to me. Kind regards, Sara X-Press W1 captain -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... All other crews may boat 15 minutes after Lighting Down." The rule will take effect from *Wednesday 1st February inclusive*, i.e. second boats and IVs may not boat until 07:24 on Wednesday. Secondly, a reminder to coxswains regarding life jackets when coxing bow loaded boats. You *MUST NOT* use* automatically inflating life jackets* when coxing a *bow loader*. If the life jacket doesn't have a pull chord to inflate, assume it is an automatically inflating jacket (meaning it'll inflate upon submersion in water). If a bow loader capsizes, an automatic life jacket can inflate, trapping you in the boat under the water, so it is imperative you wear a manual one which you can inflate if required when you've gotten out of the boat. Captains, please ensure the above messages reach your VCs, LBCs and coxes. Best wishes, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We've had a few complaints from town clubs, who are often heading back upstream around the current time of lighting down, and have met college crews going dangerously wide (what's particularly concerning is that they've all been college first eights!).
