I have attached it to this email and it is available on our website. Please forward this draw to the appropriate members of your club. I'm afraid that entries are now closed. Details for marshalling and the rules of the race can also be found on our website. The weather is looking fabulous (for February!) but if the race will need to be cancelled, a half refund will be provided. Any cancellations must be given by 10am on Friday to receive a refund. Prize giving will be held at Jesus College Boathouse at 17:00. If you would like to row through on Saturday please contact me with the division time that you will be rowing through. Thank you! Its going to be a fab race :) Best, Izzy -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The deadline for payments is this Friday, 3rd February (along with your Lent Bumps entries and submissions for the programme). If your club's bill and entry fees are not paid by this date, your crews will be considered withdrawn. The preferred method of payment is bank transfer - account details are on the bottom of your bill. Please e-mail me when you make a payment, particularly if it's from a personal (rather than club) account as the references don't always come through the online banking system. Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course. As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a free dinner (including drinks) at the Cambridge Blue pub, the week after bumps. Furthermore, everyone who volunteers for umpiring before Monday 20th Feb will count towards their college's marshal allocation. You don't need to have umpired before. There will be a meeting for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps before so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave 2 divisions clear before your race and 1 after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: http://www.cucbc.org/lents/times The umpires briefing will be on Sunday 26th February, at 18:30, in the Divinity School, St John?s College. It'll last about half an hour, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. You can sign up here: http://www.cucbc.org/node/421 If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at conor at cucbc.org Many thanks, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's much easier if you get planned subs approved now, so we only have to deal with injury/illness subs during Bumps. In general, subs should meet the following requirements (I've added the rules inspiring this info to an appendix below): - should have been eligible to row in the boat they are subbing into, had they been entered as a member of the crew (i.e. bona fide student at that college, not rowing in another boat, no blues or first Mays colours below third boat/third division, whichever is lower) - subbing for someone who is genuinely ill, injured, of who has a completely immovable and unmissable academic commitment - subs may not come from a higher boat, without exception (i.e. any sub which would give an unfair advantage to the crew they're subbing into, e.g. M1 to M2 or W3 to W4, even for the GoR, is expressly forbidden). - subs must not have been training with a town club outside college hours If you submit requests for subs in the following format (hat tip to Sidney from Lents last year for this example), we'll be able to approve them very quickly in most cases: Sub 1 number 2, FIRSTNAME SURNAME Race Saturday division 4 Boat Sidney M2 Reason e.g. [injured shoulder | stomach bug | needs to fly home, can't reschedule | immovable, unmissable Chemistry practical] Substitute FIRSTNAME SURNAME - confirmation of student status at relevant college, confirmation not rowed in any other crew in this set of Bumps, confirmation not rowed with a town club this term, brief description of rowing history If need be, feel free to plead your case for why an exception should be made for your particular sub request, but we'll just fall back on the precedent set by previous decisions (that is why the Senior Committee exist after all). Many thanks, Conor Appendix Rule 5 of 'Rules for Racing - General': a That the crew which competes in the first heat of a CUCBC event (including the Getting on Race) be considered the official crew for the duration of that event. No change in the official crew shall be allowed, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which will usually be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That before the first heat, approval may be sought from the Executive Committee for a substitute in the first heat. If this is granted, the official crew should be provided in writing by the club concerned to the Executive Committee, and is expected to be the crew which has trained together that term. The official crew must be provided in advance of the first heat. c That substitution of rowers from crews in a higher position on the River to those in either a lower position or those competing in the Getting on Race shall not be permitted. Rule 21 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' a That no person who has gained first Lent or May Colours or a Trial Cap may row or steer below the third division of the CUCBC Lent or May Races or below his/her College third crew, whichever is the lower, without the permission of the Hon. Secretaries. This shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. b That no person who has rowed in, steered or been a reserve for any of the CUBC, CUWBC or CULRC crews may row below his/her College third May Boat without the permission of the Hon. Secretaries, which shall normally be given only in the case of accident or illness. Rule 22 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' a That, with the exception of the sandwich boats, no-one may row or steer in more than one division in one day, and that no-one who has rowed in a particular crew in the races may then row in another crew, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness. b That anyone may row in one division and steer in another on the same day. Rule 28 of 'Rules for Racing - Lent and May Races' That no-one who has rowed or steered in a successful boat in the Getting-On Race row or steer respectively in a higher boat during the races which follow, except with the permission of the Executive Committee, which shall usually be given only in cases of accident or illness of someone in a higher boat. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please check the outing logs for each of your crews and return the declaration to me by Thursday 23rd. This deadline is to allow us to fix the start order as soon as the Getting On race has finished - even if you don't have any crews entered into the GOR we need to know how many slots are available for qualifying crews. Where you have been running a squad system for a significant part of the term rather than fixed crews please contact me if you do not meet the 12 outing requirement. We understand that subs are sometime required at short notice for illness/injury/absence - please contact me if you are proposing to sub in a cox who has not been coxing this term and does not have prior Bumps experience as a cox. Weekday outings after 9.00 count as 1.5 outings for the purpose of the 12 outing rule. Early morning and weekend outings count as 1, as do races. The GOR may be counted as one of the 12 for those crews taking part. If you have a crew who fail to meet the required 12 outing threshold, feel free to contact me before scratching them if you think there are grounds for me to allow them to race. Any crew not fulfilling the 12 outing requirement may race for time only in the GOR, and will be eligible for a half refund. Any questions, let me know. This year?s edition promises to be even better than last year and will live up to the Regatta?s high standards of fun, colours and corrupt Marshals. All you have to know about the race is this: it?s a lot more fun than Bumps, a lot less dangerous than Bumps and the weather is set too be much, much better than during Bumps week (of course, since it takes place a mere two weeks later). If this wasn?t enough to convince you, note that previous editions have been consistently ranked first among all regattas on the Cam by the Journal of Alternative Rowing. Catz Cardinals is the only race on the river in which you can enter tub pairs! To make this year?s edition a success in all categories, make sure you encourage as many fellow rowers as possible to start thinking about entering. The entry form for the regatta along with the rules will be available this Thursday (Feb 23rd), so stay tuned. We look forward to receiving your entries in due course. Get excited! CUCBC have managed to persuade Ro to give a talk on the racing line for Tideway (see, we're good for stuff other than spoiling your fun!), which I'd recommend very highly to any cox planning to compete at WEHoRR or ManHORR. I've raced on Tideway somewhere upwards of 20 times, and I'll still be taking notes. Ro has stayed current on the racing line (which keeps changing as the bottom of the river changes shape), so I think almost any cox would benefit from attendance, either as a refresher for knowledge not used for a year, or to prepare them for their first trip. (For those who've not been on the course before, it's complex and quite intimidating for anyone experiencing it for the first time as a cox. If that applies to your cox, I'd very very strongly urge them to come along. I'm incredibly glad someone talked me through it ahead of my first WEHoRR.) All the best next week, and beyond, Robert ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Robert Nimmo Date: 24 February 2017 at 19:15 Subject: Coxing the Tideway Racing Line - Monday 6th March To: coxes at lists.cucbc.org Dear college coxes, While I know most of you are obsessively focussed on Lents, and will remain so for at least the next week, a number of you will be entering either WEHoRR on the 11th of March or ManHORR on the 25th. Ro Thompson has very kindly agreed to give a talk to any competing college cox to discuss the racing line for these races on Monday the 6th at 7:30pm*. Ro has been coxing for 13 years, including three years training on the Tideway with Vesta Rowing Club based in Putney. She has four Tideway pennants, three from WeHORR and one from HORR. Whilst as Vesta she coxed the top womens crew to 3rd and 4th place in WeHORR and raced twice in the elite womens 8s event at Henley Royal Regatta. She is a Level 2 British Rowing coach and until retiring in 2015 was the M1 cox at Cantabs Rowing Club, winning two headships. Outside of the UK she has raced at Ghent Regatta, Basel Head and twice at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, MA. For those who have yet to experience Tideway, the complexities cannot be compared with the Cam**. The difference between a good and bad racing line can be measured in 10s of seconds, while even a few seconds margin can cost you upwards of 25 places in the finish order. On a purely personal note, I've gained enormously from hearing Ro speak in the past both in terms of Tideway results, but also in terms of feeling confident navigating on a river which is much busier and more dangerous than the Cam. I would very strongly urge any of you planning to compete in WEHoRR or ManHORR this year to pop this in your diary, to be remembered after the haze of BCD fades. All the best for next week, Robert * The observant amongst you will note I haven't said where... This will be confirmed shortly, but will be a lecture room in a college somewhere near the centre. ** Yes fine, oh pedants of the coxing mailing list. They can be compared, but only in terms of 'one is much bigger than the other!' -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Talbott Cup was created three years ago to provide increased racing opportunity for lower boats which are often disadvantaged by the Pembroke Regatta categorization system and the lower number of bumps divisions in Lents. After the success of last year's event, the race will be run on Tuesday 14th March, from 2pm. Entries are open to boats no higher than M3s/W2s, although exceptional entries (M2s of predominately ex-novices) may be permitted on a case-by-case basis. The regatta is, however, intended for lower boats' rowers and as such we ask that no rower enter who has competed in any Bumps in an M1, M2 or W1. The race will be run in a similar style to Pembroke Regatta with divisions for W2, M3, W3 and M4. Tankards will be awarded to crews winning any event with at least 4 entries. From gd396 at cam.ac.uk Sun Feb 26 18:25:32 2017 From: gd396 at cam.ac.uk (Geoffroy Dolphin) Date: Sun, 26 Feb 2017 18:25:32 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] CATZ CARDINALS - Sign-up and rules Message-ID: Dear Captains, An unusually large number of Cardinals were observed around Ditton Meadows last week (see attached picture). The rumour has it that they have been holding their annual Rules meeting. One saw them gathering in plenary sessions and split committees, engaging in intense debates and vivid discussions. This year's negotiations were particularly tense as opposition between the Senior Cardinals and Junior Cardinals reached unprecedented levels. Fortunately, thanks to the wisdom of all, all's well that ends well and the Rules for this year's edition have been set! Before leaving, the Senior Umpire dropped them in SCCBC's mail box for everyone's enjoyment. They are available here: http://www.boatclub.caths.cam.ac.uk/content/cardinals-regatta-2017 Even more exciting, this means that entries are now accepted via the following link: https://goo.gl/forms/6p9Ks7ny243NoGUB2 . Don't wait, enter your crew! Catz Cardinals Committee, Geoffroy Dolphin Lawrence Hopkins PS: Good luck to everyone rowing Bumps this week. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For all sub requests from now on (which we're only expecting to be in the case of injury or illness, so hopefully none!), please send requests in the following form, again to both CCed committee emails. If you send your emails to an individual (esp. me), it's likely they won't be able to deal with it in time. For urgent sub requests for the current day, please come to control as soon as you can to speak to a CU / DCU in person. Format: *SUB *required for *NAME* *RACE **DAY DIVISION* *BOAT **COLLEGE CREW* *REASON * *WHY THEY CAN'T ROW**SUBSTITUTE **NAME *- confirmation that sub is a current student at COLLEGE, confirmation they're not rowing in any other crews this set of Bumps, confirmation that they didn't row in a successful GoR crew, confirmation that they haven't been training with a town club this term. Brief rowing history. In the hopefully unlikely case of a cox sub, please supply extra details about prior Bumps experience and experience with the crew they're subbing into. Best of luck to everyone competing today and this week! See you on the river, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Today's results can be found here . *Notes from the Umpires* - Don?t row into stationary crews - If you have bumped out or finished at the railings, wait on the reach until the next division has rowed past up to the start - If you have cleared to the non-towpath side, try to grab the bank and bury your blades on bowside - Don?t marshal on the apex of the corner (Morley?s Holt) as you impede the racing line ? apologies if you were told to do this today - All crews should be back in their boats by the time the previous division is racing past you - Know where your finish is. Make sure you wind down once your stern is clear of the finish and DO NOT race around Chesterton corner/under the Green Dragon footbridge! - Crews should remember that they should not expect there to be an umpire at the finish telling them when to wind it down unless they are genuinely close to making or being bumped - Crews should ensure that they turn up to marshal at the right time. If you are more than 5 minutes early to marshaling, please wait before the Green Dragon footbridge so that you do not enter into the line of racing boats *Fines* - Caius M4 - Early celebration - ?30 - Churchill W2 - Dangerously incompetent coxing - ?75 - Clare M3 - Public urination - ?85 - Corpus W1 - Very nearly capsizing while pushing off to row home - Go on a swap with the Homerton crew who capsized in training last week - Emmanuel M2 - Early celebration - ?30 - Emmanuel M2 - Failure to clear - ?40 - Homerton M1 - Failure to concede - ?50 - Homerton M1 - Failure to clear - ?50 - Jesus M3 - Excessive Bank Party - ?30 - Jesus W2 - Excessive Bank Party - ?30 - Kings? W2 - Failure to easy - ?50 - Lady Margaret M2 - Excessive Bank Party - ?30 - Lady Margaret W3 - Failure to steer the traditional Lady Margaret line - Split the difference and aim for the wet bit in the middle - Queens? W2 - Late to marshal - Bring an alarm clock tomorrow - Robinson W1 - Abusive behaviour - ?25 - Robinson W1 - Forgot Bung (no advantage) - ?15 - Sidney Sussex M1 - Very late to concede - ?40 - Sidney Sussex M1 - Incompetent concession - ?25 All fines can be appealed by e-mailing Dan Wilkins, CUCBC Senior Treasurer ( seniortreasurer at cucbc.org ), within 48 hours of this email being sent.
