From mark at cucbc.org Mon Oct 3 23:11:55 2016 From: mark at cucbc.org (Mark Jacobs) Date: Tue, 4 Oct 2016 00:11:55 +0100 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Annual PL insurance declarations Message-ID: <36da5a22-5e54-cfb6-a3b7-de9de5f9de59@cucbc.org> Dear All, At the start of every year we check that all clubs have Public Liability insurance cover in place. (This is the cover that pays out if you injure someone or damage property not belonging to you, not the cover that pays out when you break your own boat). These may or may not be part of the same policy. Some clubs have their own individual policy while some are covered by their College's insurance. The policy must include 'Member to Member' cover (essentially cover in the case of an accident in which the injured party and person responsible for the accident are in the same club). All of the major providers include this as standard, but if you have changed your provider, please double check your policy details or get in touch with your broker. At the moment, all that is required of you is to update details of your insurance provider and renewal date on the CUCBC website, which must be completed by the end of Week 1 of term (i.e. 23.59 on Wednesday 12 October). If you're not certain about details, your Senior Treasurer should be the first port of call. In the usual fashion, any club failing to provide details by the deadline will be barred from boating until they have provided the required information. Later this term there will be the annual safety declarations forms, more about these in due course... Any questions, please let me know. That the finishing posts for the lower divisions of the Lent Races be as follows: a. Top Finish : The Railings b. Bottom Finish : The first concrete post upstream of Ditton Corner. And the proposed change is: 34. That the finishing posts for the lower divisions of the Lent Races be as follows: a. Top Finish : The upstream side of the Railway Bridge b. They wouldn't need to take over properly until November, after Uni IVs, but an extra pair of hands would be very helpful. Also, as I've had a few queries, we don't currently have any extra early morning restrictions (two boat rule, 15 minute rule etc.), so any senior crew can boat at lighting down (with lights for first 15 mins of course), and then novices at 7:30am. Murray Edwards College boat club has one more VIII than we have rack space for and we have run out of storage options. I know that most of you have very full boathouses and we have generally come to the conclusion that we won't be able to get racking space on the cam any time soon. We now are just looking for somewhere to put the shell until we can find a way of disposing of it. If anyone has a piece of land or knows of anywhere that we could legally store the shell for a few weeks please get in touch! Alternatively If anyone knows of anyone in the market for a Burgashell VIII I would love to hear. Our record keeping hasn't been great, however I have been told it is a men's VIII purchased around 1997ish. It is in fairly good condition and is perfect for novices. Failure to do so will result in that club not being allowed to compete, as marshals are essential to the safe running of the event. Substitutes, providing they would have been eligible crew members before entries closed, will still be accepted until 17:00 on Tuesday 25th Oct (by emailing committee at cucbc.org). After that point, crews will be fixed, and substitutes will only be accepted in a case of accident, injury, illness, or completely immovable and unmissable academic commitments (labs and supervision are almost always movable). Race times can be moved, but only within the windows where racing will be happening (14:00 - 16:00 on Wed-Fri), and in the interest of fairness, one semi-final can not be moved from Friday unless the other one is too. You must get agreement from both clubs (or all clubs in the case of semi-finals), and email both conor at cucbc.org and cam at cucbc.org with the new time, CCing in a representative of each crew. If it helps, swapping within a division is fine (if, say, you need to get back quickly, you could swap to be the first race in a division), but please check with your competitors and the crews in the race you want to swap with, and then email us. Any queries on the above, please reply to this email. Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Could I ask a favour - that you attempt to impress on your coxes going out at lighting down or anticipating being home close to lighting up that they do need to fit lights (with batteries, mounted somewhere sensible etc etc etc), and that often they do make a very real difference to the visibility of a shell? Many thanks, Robert ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Robert Nimmo Date: 12 October 2016 at 17:23 Subject: Lights and visibility To: coxes at lists.cucbc.org Dear coxes, A gentle reminder about lights. If boats are going to be on the water within 15 minutes of lighting up/down, they must be fitted with a bright, non-flashing white light on both bow and stern, such that at least one can be seen from any point round the boat (you want to be visible when spinning too...) For this reason, lights fitted to one backstay are not sufficient, since the bow canvas blocks the view from one side, and boating without lights at all is not OK (you know who you are). Nor are lights with almost dead batteries very much use. You want the light to be the first thing seen, not the last. In addition, if visibility is poor, it's generally worth fitting the lights then as well, regardless of the time of day. This isn't a case of mean cranky CUCBC introducing rules for our personal amusement, but does make a genuine difference to how visible your boat is during the darker mornings, which ultimately keeps you (and us) safer. On the subject of poor visibility, please use a little bit of common sense. We are likely to see more foggy days over the next few weeks. Pulling three way overtakes at speed into a fog bank where visibility is less than three lengths will sooner or later result in a dangerous and expensive incident, which I suspect no-one wants to see. As coxes, you have both the right and responsibility to refuse to undertake manouvers you consider dangerous. I know it's early in term, that people are keen to get on with training and that pressure from coaches is sometimes difficult to resist, but a few minutes waiting behind a slower crew will be much less harmful to your training goals than hitting something head on. Please use your own judgement as well. Best of luck for training and racing this term, Robert -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
