In recent years such articles obviously haven?t been forthcoming, but we would like to start including them again this year. Anybody is free to submit pretty much anything they like really (humorous, informative, poetic, fictional, odyssean, cartoon etc.). We will include a selection of worthwhile submissions. Articles 300-500 words would be ideal. Deadline for submission: 13th May 2016. We have a guaranteed place in bumps, so whoever signs up will definitely get to row Mays! Outings are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 6:20 meet ATB. There is also the opportunity to join our W2 quad, if she is interested in learning to scull/ polishing up her sculling. If your college has ergs that are easy to access, then erging can be done in her own time, otherwise they can be done at Fitz boat house with very flexible timings. I was therefore wondering whether any of you have any spare female rowers who would be willing to join and train with Sidney Sussex W2 this Easter? In order for us to enter the Getting on Race (and hopefully compete in May bumps!), we will need to contact CUCBC by the 8th May, in order to inform them of this. They should be fine with this arrangement, as long as you also confirm that you have no seat for these rowers in your own crews. Our weekly training schedule is as follows: Monday - Outing 6:30am (atbh) Tuesday - Women's Circuits 7:30am (Sidney Sussex Squash Court) Wednesday - Erg 6/7pm (Sidney Sussex gym) Thursday - Outing 6:30am (atbh) Friday- Outing 6:30am (atbh), Erg 6/7pm (Sidney gym) Saturday/Sunday - Rest Ideally, we would like to begin training with a confirmed crew within the next week, so please let me know as soon as possible if you have anyone who would like to join us! Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course. As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a *free dinner* (including drinks) at the Cambridge Blue pub, the week after bumps. Those who volunteer to umpire also count towards their college's marshal allocation. You don't need to have umpired before. There will be a meeting for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in *at least 2 sets of bumps before* so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave 2 divisions clear before your race and 1 after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: http://www.cucbc.org/mays/times The umpires briefing will be during the weekend of the 4th / 5th June and should last about half an hour. The exact time and location will be confirmed nearer the time, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. Please note the following: * One form per club please - not separate submissions per crew or for men's/women's sections. * The requirement for each crew is 12 outings, where weekday sessions after 9am count as 1.5 towards the total. Outings in IVs or small boats do not count towards the total. * Races count as 1 outing, irrespective of the time of day or how many rounds of a regatta you have raced. The Getting-on-Race may count towards the total for those crews attempting to get on. * Please take a common sense view when it comes to subs/crew shuffling. In particular, each member should ordinarily have undertaken at least 8 outings with the crew (though we're flexible and reasonable when it comes to putting experienced subs in at the last minute). Please contact me to discuss if you think it necessary, especially in the case of coxes. * I'd appreciate it if in your return you could indicate which of your crews have been training regularly on weekdays after 9am (either in working hours, men's/women's hours or after the restricted time). This is simply a straw poll to see how many crews are making use of these quieter times. * As usual, a random sample of clubs will be asked to submit copies of their outing logs for the term. These may be in any format convenient, but please ensure that you send me a log of outings actually undertaken, not a Google Docs outing planner that has not been updated to reflect outings missed due to illness, river closures etc. * If you have crews entered that have not managed 12 outings, they will still be welcome to race for time only in the GoR (and will be eligible for the 50% non-qualifier's refund). * If you think you have a good excuse for not having made the 12-outing requirement by the deadline, feel free to plead your case with me before scratching. Forms are to be returned to me by the end of Thursday 2 June. Any questions, please ask. If your cox can't see that the river is clear for the entire duration of your overtake, they shouldn't be initiating one. The corners and the crossover points are not acceptable overtaking spots. - Crews heading upstream (i.e. towards the boathouses) have priority at the cross-over points. That being said, if there is a crew (or even a slow moving narrowboat) already coming through, you do not have the right to try and squeeze past them. Stop and wait. - No weekend rowing before 11am, even in small boats. Only CRA clubs and people training with University Squads may row before 11am on Saturdays and Sundays. - The evening men's and women's hours are still in place, and enforceable with fines. Crews which are not first boats (or in the first two divisions of the Mays - seewww.cucbc.org/bumps/startorder/16), may not row between the hours of 17:30 and 20:00 on weekdays. IVs may row over the lock during these hours, but only if the crew is comprised of people who could be out in an VIII. Please ensure this message reaches LBCs in particular. - Please keep Early Morning Noise to anabsolute minimum. Just because it is light, it doesn't mean you can wake up local residents, especially before 7:30am. - Crews rowing below Baitsbite lockmust not carry out standing startsbeside moored boats (particularly in Horningsea - the first set of houses you come to heading downstream). Please also be vigilant of the swans and cygnets around that area, and be prepared to stop a piece if necessary.Ideally, try to start piecesbelow the last moored boat(just downstream of that massive house), and remember you should not be racing through Clayhithe bridge or the marina.Wherever possible, coxes should attempt to reduce wash alongside moored boats and use their common sense on what is and isn't acceptable.Sparring is not permitted below the lock. Best wishes, and good luck with training, Conor -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Our top crew is entering a coxless four into the Wyfold Challenge Cup at Henley this year. Unfortunately, we have very limited equipment and are looking to rent a boat for the next few weeks for Marlow and HRR. Our crew average weight is 90kg and we are looking for anything that is of a decent standard for racing at major regattas. If you have a spare coxless four and are looking for some extra cash for your club, then please get in touch with me ASAP. We would ideally like to pick up this weekend at Metropolitan Regatta, but are willing to travel with our trailer to pick up. Best wishes, Dr Oliver Negus -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
