We have been very busy since i last emailed you all. We raced Oxford Brookes in a Fixture and beat them convincingly. Last weekend the Blue boat raced Molesey and won by 20 seconds and Blondie raced Thames Rowing Club?s 1st 8 with 2 pieces. It was tough conditions with both boats taking on water. However, we had a win in the first piece and they won the second. Some great racing experience for the Blondie Boat. So the first event we want to talk about is BUCS: Here is a link for you to express your interest. Below are some dates for your diaries. Any issues please let me know. http://goo.gl/forms/FT9rFYiuoX If you would like to sign up for some ergo sessions. These will be held in Goldie starting on the 12th April. If interested please sign up here: Spring Development Squad Ergo Sessions https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Qs3yiaYf8i0vWn5SV1EPovhwZxtRvxhfDkf0eOlXpNg/edit?usp=sharing You do not have to be doing BUCS or HWR to come to these, they are in addition to those opportunities. Events and Training BUCS The goal is to put together an 8+ and a 4+ for the novice category (The goal will be for the 4+ to come out of the 8+). I would also like to race an intermediate 4+ for those who are no longer Novices. Training for BUCS will begin with an ergo on the 7th of April at 5pm in Goldie Boat House. We will do another ergo on the 8th at the same time and location From this we will put a group together to row on the 12th. This will be an early morning session. (any issues let me know). We shall organise training times to best suit the group but i would expect on previous years this will be morning sessions (train departs Cambridge at 5:55 and we return on the 8:26 so you can make your 9am classes. I will inform you closer to the time how this works with trains, re-embursement for train tickets etc. Dev Squad - BUCS - Ergo Session Scheduled: 7 Apr 2016, 17:00 to 18:30 Location: Goldie Boat House HWR We will enter the Academic 4+ event. Training will begin the week after BUCS with a couple of ergs to see who is interested - 4th May in Goldie at 5pm. We will also hold a planning meeting to organise sessions from availability. Dev Squad - HWR Campaign Begins - Ergo Session Scheduled: 4 May 2016, 17:00 to 18:30 Location: Goldie Boat House Development Squad Camp This will be a smaller group than in previous years (approximately 16 athletes and 3 coxes) and will start on the 21st June through till the 14th July. A new element this year will be a sculling focus in the last week which will be based in Cambridge. This camp exposes you to the trialling process, the technical focusses we pursue, some of our workouts, some racing and importantly gives you an opportunity to evaluate if it is going to work with your academic commitments. We?d be very happy and grateful of offers to marshall if anyone wishes to make their time on the bank official. Please, if you really feel you must be on the river during 11:15am to 1:30pm this Sunday, be considerate of the competitors. Although all are told the rules of the river and not to take racing lines on the bends, for most this will not be their home water and we can all agree that the Cam is not a straightforward or wide river to navigate through town. For some of Sunday?s competitors, this will be their last chance to race before they compete in the famous 125 mile Devizes to Westminster race over Easter weekend. An injury from a collision at Sunday?s race could exclude them from an event they have been training for all winter. > > Important detail to note: THERE WILL BE BUOYS UNDER GREEN DRAGON BRIDGE AND AT BAITS BITE TO MARK THE TURNING POINTS FOR COMPETITORS. More information on HWR and the DS Camp after easter. Look forward to hearing from you and any questions please drop me a message. Dear Cambridge college rowers and coxes, This is a request on behalf of the Boat Race organisers and timekeepers. In 2013 the Boat Race finish judge Ben Kent and I instituted a new system at the Boat Race finish post. The finishline flag, dropped as the first crew passes and then again for the second crew, is now repeated by a shadow flag-waver onto the Surrey bank, so that the timekeepers can see it from the following launches even if they are a long way behind a losing crew with a large margin. We have started a new tradition of recruiting a college rower or cox to do it each year, alternately from the two universities, and this time since it's an even year we are looking for a Cambridge rowing person. No varsity squad connection is needed, but it needs to be someone who is a current CU student, and has rowed or coxed for their college, preferably this season. So: - Are you currently in the UK and thus quickly contactable for arrangements? - Are you already planning to be in London on Sunday 27th March 2016? - Would you be willing to change your plans and spend the Women's Boat Race (15:10) Osiris-Blondie race (15:25), Isis-Goldie race (15:40) and the Boat Race (16:10) helping by acting as the shadow flag-waver near Chiswick Bridge? - Can you guarantee to turn up when asked to (you may need to allow substantial travel time on Boat Race day)? - Can you keep your head under pressure? (the flag-waver will need to mirror the opposite flag, the official one, very precisely.) If yes to all of those.... - You would need to be free in London from some time earlier on race day (to be briefed) until after the end of the main boat race, which should be approx 4:30-4:40pm. Briefing and duty times will be organised by finish judge Ben Kent and may include the morning (tbc). - No expenses paid, I'm afraid, but you will have a grandstand view of the finish line for all four races and the satisfaction of knowing you helped the day go smoothly. The other 2016 finish flag-wavers will be Cambridge Blues, but we keep this job for a college boatie and you will be part of the team. Names submitted before 10am on Monday 21st March 2016 will be passed on by me to the race organisers, who will have the final say. I won't reply directly, but the person invited will be contacted by the race officials. If you don't hear back from anyone it's probably because someone else got there before you. If the top person can't help after all, we will work down the list. We had a huge response from Oxford college rowers last year and Cambridge rowers the year before, so don't bother emailing after the deadline. You must be a current student and we will prioritise those who answer promptly and have competed recently for their college. If you can answer yes to all the above questions and are interested, please email me back at rq at rowingservice.com , stating your name, mobile phone number, which college you rowed or coxed for and in which year(s). Thanks very much, Dr Rachel Quarrell Telegraph rowing correspondent and official Boat Race timekeeper. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
