Any club intending to boat at Ely should remember that: Under the terms of the CUCBC Constitution, the CUCBC has no regulatory powers over College Clubs when they are using the Ouse at Ely. However, clubs are reminded of the following: The CUWBC Constitution expressly forbids the College womens' Boat Clubs from rowing between the Fish and Duck PH (South of Ely) and the Adelaide Course (North of Ely) without the express permission of the CUWBC President. A CUBC Rule which was re-affirmed in 2001, bans rowing by College crews on the Adelaide course and on the River between Ely and the Fish and Duck PH without the express permission of the CUBC President. Any clubs who do receive permission to row at Ely are reminded: The river is not regulated by the Cam Conservators and other licences may be required. Permission to boat is required from the landowner whose land you are boating from. If using a launch, the ARA Safety Code provisions regarding launches must be followed. I just wanted to start with a quick email to introduce myself and tell you about what is coming up with Cambridge University Womens? Boat Club. My name is Paddy Ryan and i am the assistant Coach to Cambridge University Women?s Boat Club. This time every year i write to competitors of Queens Ergs and to the Captains list telling people about the opportunities ahead. I have included a link below with information about upcoming erg sessions. I also want to tell you about British University Championships (BUCS), Henley Womens' Regatta (HWR) and Dev Squad. Whether you have just started at Cambridge or have been around for a few years, if you like being competitive, want an incredible challenge then we are interested in talking to you. For the last 2 years we have taken a novice crew to compete at BUCS in the Novice 8 and we have returned Gold medalists each time (last year by 10 seconds over second place). We are also looking at competing in the Novice 4+ this year and again with an Intermediate 4+. For HWR we will be entering a Intermediate coxed 4+. More information to follow on this as we get closer but think about it. Commitment will be appropriate so you can get sessions in with your college and do this project as well. Dev Squad, more information to follow on this regarding spaces available, selection, etc but the dates are the 20th June till 16th January. It will include Kingston Regatta and maybe Molesey Regatta though we are looking at altering the programme this year as this regatta hasn?t been able to find much competition for us. Did you read the article by one of our athletes? Zara Goozee - Downing College. She writes about how she didn?t think she was good enough to give it ago and 2 months in and she is stroking the boat to be the fastest university crew to compete at the British Championships. http://www.bluebirdnews.co.uk/zara-goozee-writes-about-her-build-up-from-nothing-to-the-british-rowing-championships/ What you might not have known is that there was also a novice athlete in that boat. Someone who learnt to row last year, their first year at Cambridge. Starting later this month i will be running ergo sessions. If you are interested in - Sign up here - there is times and dates on the sign up sheet. I look forward to seeing you then. This is a technical session where we go over some rowing fundamentals, i will also provide opportunities for people to ask questions about rowing and opportunities this year. Happy New Year. It should be made clear now however that the captains do not have a vote on the number of divisions the chief umpires are willing to run. Any motion you may wish to bring forward should be invariant under the chief umpires' decisions on divisions, else is in essence a threat. That said, be mindful of the decisions that were taken by the captains last year in order to try and improve the standard of the lower boats. These decisions were supported by the senior committee as strategies likely to bring about positive change (in particular, that weekday afternoon outings count as 1.5); this is being taken into consideration. This sounds very authoritarian, but it is nonetheless the state of things. I'd like to remind you of the following points: 1) The river is NOT a one-way system in the morning - town crews (both VIIIs and small boats) may be paddling upstream back to their boathouses. 2) In order to overtake another crew, you MUST be able to see enough of the river to move to the other side, row past and get back to your side, all the time being CERTAIN that you will not obstruct any oncoming boats. 3) The bankparty has a different point of view to the cox of a boat - working together you can identify safe overtakes in some places where the cox alone cannot. 4) Coxes - before you move out to overtake, ask yourself whether you would have time to complete the manouevre if an VIII appeared in the distance, coming towards you at a normal speed for that part of the river (e.g. paddling along Riverside, race pace in Plough Reach). Do you have time to complete your overtake? Can your coach see more and help you out? Can you safely overtake? 5) If another crew asks to 'come by', please don't deny them purely for the sake of ego. If there's a queue ahead, or if you can see something oncoming that they can't, or you think it's not a safe choice for some other reason, by all means respond in the negative. I well understand the desire to overtake a slower boat and get some clear water to work at your own pace. However, in order to avoid further clashes/damage, and to optimise traffic flow on the river, please ensure that you are not taking chances and hoping that nothing is coming the other way. Likewise, please cooperate when a faster crew is behind you - don't hog the middle of the river and give a clear acknowledgement when they ask to 'come by'. Coxes - if your coach tells you to go past another crew, and you're not sure, it's OK to hang back and choose not to pass. You might miss out on a bit of clear water, but you can talk about it with your coach later and make a more informed decision next time. Coaches - talk to your coxes about overtaking, especially those with less experience. Explain that on the approach to some corners you can see further down the river than they can, and what clear instructions you'll give as and when you think an overtake is safe and necessary. We very much hope that the event will be able to run as planned, but please keep a close eye on your emails for any updates either directly from NCBC or via the CUCBC flag status emails. In general we are able to maintain a green flag in worse conditions on race days because of the highly controlled traffic circulation and relatively low density of crews compared to a busy early morning session. However, this does not mean that we will simply 'hope for the best' if we believe conditions to be hazardous. As ever, the final responsibility for deciding whether or not to boat rests with the each crew/coach. A green flag simply allows you to make that choice, and if you believe that you are not competent to deal with the conditions as you find them then you should not boat.
