Please make sure your coxes and rowers understand the need for an emergency stop, and get them to practice doing it. My advice would be to rotate the blade slightly and bury so as to put the top edge of the blade under water. This is far more effective than trying to square up into the water, but does require some degree of skill else you might go swimming. I will emphasise again that we will remove any crew that we deem unable to stop itself quickly enough in a bumps situation, even if that crew is a first boat. Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course. As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires are offered a free dinner (including drinks) at the Cambridge Blue pub, the week after bumps. Those who volunteer to umpire also count towards their college's marshal allocation. You don't need to have umpired before. There will be a meeting for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps before so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. We suggest you leave 2 divisions clear before your race and 1 after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here: http://www.cucbc.org/lents/times The umpires briefing will probably be on Sunday 21st February and should last about half an hour. The exact time and location will be confirmed nearer the time, and I?ll endeavour to distribute a first draft of the umpiring rota before the meeting. Please note the following: * One form per club please - not separate submissions per crew or for men's/women's sections. * This is the first term that the modified Rule 18a is in force - rather than 10 outings, the new requirement is 12 outings, where weekday sessions after 9am count as 1.5 towards the total. * Races count as 1 outing, irrespective of the time of day (i.e. Robinson Head is not 1.5). The Getting-on-Race may count towards the total for those crews entered. * Please take a common sense view when it comes to subs/crew shuffling. In particular, each member should ordinarily have undertaken at least 8 outings with the crew (though we're flexible and reasonable when it comes to putting experienced subs in at the last minute). Please contact me to discuss if you think it necessary, especially in the case of coxes. * Note also Rule 18b, that you may not have more than 2 Lent-term novices in any crew. * I'd appreciate it if in your return you could indicate which of your crews have been training regularly on weekdays after 9am. This is simply a straw poll to see how many crews are making use of this quiet time. * As usual, a random sample of 6 clubs will be asked to submit copies of their outing logs for the term. These may be in any format convenient, but please ensure that you send me a log of outings actually undertaken, not a Google Docs outing planner that has not been updated to reflect outings missed due to flags etc. * If you have crews entered that have not managed 12 outings, they will still be welcome to race for time only in the GoR (but will not be eligible for the 50% non-qualifier's refund). * If you think you have a good excuse for not having made the 12-outing requirement by the deadline, feel free to plead your case with me before scratching. Forms are to be returned to me by the end of Wednesday 17 February. Any questions, please ask. This lights the boat up very clearly for anything directly in front of the crew, which serves much of the time since the majority of times lights are needed in the mornings are between college crews who are all going in the same direction (by the time anyone spins at the lock, it's usually bright enough that they're no longer needed). However, a light on the backstay of the bow rigger (at least on a normal stroke rig) is invisible to any traffic on the other side of the river from you, which has led to a few issues in the last few weeks where town clubs (who boat before lighting down) meet college crews which appear unlit until they happen to hit the right angle to see round the bow canvas. >From the perspective of a cox, it's much much easier to take suitable action early to avoid getting in the way of another crew if you can see them some distance away. This becomes even more important when it's misty, or raining (or anything else which reduces visibility still further), so being better lit up not only protects you from accidents, but also helps other crews on the river position themselves to maximise free flow of traffic. Given all that, could I ask that crews fitting lights make sure that they are visible from both sides of the shell? (Either by mounting on the bow canvas/bowball, or by popping a light on both the bow and 2-seat backstays). To protect yourselves, lights should be visible through 360 degrees, such that you can be seen from ahead, behind and even when spinning. Many thanks, Robert PS For information, since I had someone ask recently, CRA (the equivalent to CUCBC for the Town clubs) expects Town crews in the dark to have a white light on the bow, and white light on the stern and a red light on the stern as well. So if you meet a weird looking Town crew out, that's why (and should help to judge which way they're going). PPS Obviously, College clubs don't need to follow CRA rules, so that's purely for info. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There is to be absolutely zero coaching from the bank above the railway bridge before 0730. On top of that, coxing should be as quiet as possible and restricted to basic commands. If you cannot safely navigate to the railway bridge under these restrictions you should not boat until 0730. It has been commented that 1st boats have been, in general, keeping to these restrictions. Thanks again to everyone who's signed up already. We're particularly short of people for M2 and W2 on Friday and Saturday, and somewhat short of people for M1 and W1 on those days, so even if you can only do those divisions, we'd love for you to sign up. I'll be undertaking the joyous task of organising the rota this weekend, so I'd really appreciate it if anyone thinking of signing up could do so today. The Talbott Cup was created three years ago to provide increased racing opportunity for lower boats which are often disadvantaged by the Pembroke Regatta categorization system and the lower number of bumps divisions in Lents. After the success of last year's event, the race will be run on Tuesday 8th March, from 2pm. Entries are open to boats no higher than M3s/W2s, although exceptional entries (M2s of predominately ex-novices) may be permitted on a case-by-case basis. The regatta is, however, intended for lower boats' rowers and as such we ask that no rower enter who has competed in any Bumps in an M1, M2 or W1. The race will be run in a similar style to Pembroke Regatta with divisions for W2, M3, W3 and M4. Tankards will be awarded to crews winning any event with at least 4 entries. We do not know whether an individual or an organisation/company were responsible for this, and are investigating urgently. Plainly there are real safety concerns here, and the way the drone was being flown would appear to clearly contravene CAA regulations, the relevant ones of which seem to require an altitude of at least 50 m over a river or other public path/road. I'm sending this message both for information and pre-emptively - we do not think this incident was associated with anyone from a club/college, but would seek your assistance in ensuring that noone from your clubs/colleges is tempted to use a drone near the river in the same way. We are considering what our response will need to be, both in terms of engaging the emergency services, and if necessary delaying racing, if a similar siituation arises tomorrow. St Catharine?s College Boat Club is delighted to announce the 2016 Catz Cardinals Regatta on the 10th March, promising to be the most fun and ridiculous race of the year. Starting at 11am, the boats will be a mix of 4?s, 8?s and Tubs with prizes for the best dressed boats and crews. Boats should aim to be mixed crews but with bribes being almost as important as the racing itself, marshals could be swayed to overlook this. The finals and semi-finals will be as exciting and strange as always with a mystery race for the semi-finals and a duel style race for the finals. Crews will race away from each other before being forced to spin as fast as possible before charging back towards each other to the middle of the reach. After the races, the prizes and partying will start at St Catharine?s bar before heading out for the after party (venue to be announced). Everyone should attend whether you have taken part, spectated or just like to have a drink with your fellow boaties. This event has been loved in previous years and we hope it will be a great event this year. Please see the SCCBC website for more details(http://www.boatclub.caths.cam.ac.uk/content/cardinals-regatta-2016 ) and sign up to the Facebook even for notifications (https://www.facebook.com/events/188200544882593/ ), and address all questions and entry forms to the Cardinal's Regatta Secretary Terry Wu (w437).
