Dear all,
Please see below - (a reminder that the river is closed to all College
crews including sculls and other small boats on Sunday until 3pm).
Best regards,
Wilf.
Dear rowers and scullers,
This Sunday is the the British Canoe Union Divisional and Eastern
Region Hasler Qualifier race and it is happening right here in
Cambridge!
Have you ever wondered if race kayaking might be good cross-training
for rowing? It really is. This sport, like rowing, is powered by the
legs but has an interesting twist that can work your leg and upper
body muscles in slightly different ways.
If you’d like to see some top division action (picture attached was
taken at last year’s Chelmsford race by superb local photographer
Chris Worrall) then why not watch Divisions 1 through 3 from the bank
anywhere along the river from town centre downstream to Baits Bite
lock this Sunday?
Here’s the plan:
-Divisions 1 to 3 are doing a 21 km race downstream to Baits Bite lock
and back starting from the CCC clubhouse at Newnham
-Divisions 4 to 6 are doing a 14 km race downstream to Penny Ferry and
back starting from the CCC clubhouse
-Divisions 7 to 9 and juniors in plastic boats are doing a 7 km
(slightly shorter for the juniors) race upstream to Grantchester and
back starting from the CCC clubhouse
Racing begins at 11am. We expect crews to start going through Jesus
Lock from about 11:15 am and will be back past the Green Dragon Bridge
by 1:30pm or 2pm latest.
Balancing a high spec racing kayak is more difficult than balancing a
single scull. Last year, a competitor at this event was capsized
mid-race by a careless rowing crew. The Cam Marathon is the only
official race organised and hosted by your friendly local paddlers,
the Cambridge Canoe Club, which takes place downstream from their
clubhouse at Newnham. For these three hours, once a year, hundreds of
kayakers come to Cambridge to race.
You are invited to come and watch, to cheer them on. We’d be very
happy and grateful of offers to marshall if anyone wishes to make
their time on the bank official. Please, if you really feel you must
be on the river during 11 to 2 this Sunday, be considerate of the
competitors. Although all are told the rules of the river and not to
take racing lines on the bends, for most this will not be their home
water and we can all agree that the Cam is not a straightforward or
wide river to navigate through town. For some of Sunday’s competitors,
this will be their last chance to race before they compete in the
famous 125 mile Devizes to Westminster race over Easter weekend. An
injury from a collision at Sunday’s race could exclude them from an
event they have been training for all winter.
Important detail to note: THERE WILL BE BUOYS AT PENNY FERRY AND BAITS
BITE TO MARK THE TURNING POINTS FOR COMPETITORS. PLEASE AVOID THESE.
Many thanks and all best wishes ☺
Donna McLuskie
(sculler and paddler)
