This programme is for those student-athletes in your squad with the drive and ambition to compete for the Cambridge against Oxford in the 2015 Boat Race. The development is open to senior, experienced and talented novices from your respective teams. Can you please take the time to read the attached information sheet on the Athlete Development Programme and distribute to your college club members and those that may be interested in representing the university in rowing. Thank you for supporting the CUBC Athlete Development Programme and the CUBC squad as we build towards the boat race on 6th April 2014. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your college crews the best of luck for the upcoming Lent Bump races. Before reading this start order please remember that this is entirely provisional and will change massively in the run up to the Getting-on Race and following that. There will be 6 division this term, 3 men's divisions, 2 women's divisions and a split division with the top 6 places as M4 and the bottom 12 as W3. Race division times are now available. To summarise, everything is just starting 40 minutes later with 1 less division on most days, but with all 6 divisions running Friday and Saturday to ensure sandwich boat continuity. Please be prepared for your crews to change between divisions in the run up to the races due to scratches and qualifying results. If you have any confusion about your possible position at this time let us know and we'll try to help. Lower boats who have been pushed down into the GoR from their previous starting locations will regain those places provided they qualify. All races will run to the women's finish (Peter's Posts and the Railway Bridge) except the M4/W3 split division which will finish at the lower boat's finishes on the Long Reach. Umpiring is a great way to get involved in the racing and you get the chance to be right at the centre of the action - either by cycling along with the crews or acting as a static umpire along the course. As a 'thank you' for your time, all umpires will be offered a *free dinner*(including drinks) at the Cambridge Blue pub, the week after bumps. Those who volunteer to umpire also count towards their college's marshal allocation. You don't need to have umpired before. There will be a meeting for all umpires ahead of racing where we explain everything and all new umpires are paired with a 'senior' one during racing. However, we do ask that you have rowed or coxed in at least 2 sets of bumps before so that you understand how the races work. Please remember that you can both compete and umpire. I suggest you leave 2 divisions clear before your race and 1 after to allow you to get to and from the boathouses. The division times are available here . The umpires meeting is currently scheduled for Sunday 23rd February @ 17:30 in Robinson College Umney Theatre and should last about half an hour. Grimble" Can you send this round to captains list please... Dear All, I regret to inform you that we have cancelled Robinson Head this afternoon. After discussion with CUCBC, the RCBC committee and boatmen on the river, we have decided that it is unsafe to allow crews to race in these conditions. Due to the amount of rain overnight, the river has risen excessively and this has caused the stream to become dangerous. It would be unsafe and irresponsible to allow crews to race in these conditions and therefore we have made the decision earlier rather than later to cancel the race. To those crews who were supposed to race, a further email will be sent in the next couple of days with information about refunds. With the river many metres up the bank horizontally and the stream to match getting a boat pushed out safely let alone racing is going to be a challenge. I thought I would email to get you up to speed on our thinking and expectations for flag this weekend so I don't have to answer 30+ individual emails on the subject and also to help you plan your club's training time given how little time we have before bumps now. We have further heavy rain forecast tonight and then tomorrow another of these storms with it's 50mph wind gusts due to blow through over 2 days I have a strong feeling we may not be seeing a rowable river this weekend. We need a good few days without serious rain to let the river levels calm down and I can't see this happening easily based on this forecast. The committee will be checking conditions later this afternoon and around 10 am tomorrow to see how the river fares overnight. Please remember that even if the flag is green or yellow and a crew is permitted to boat, then the DECISION TO GO OUT RESTS WITH THE COACH AND COX OF EVERY BOAT. Your clubs have to take responsibility for these decisions and truly consider if your crews are able to handle the conditions you are presented with. As has been said before the flag is not so much about individual competence, but how many boats can safely use the river at one time. Don't you just love British weather =) Tom Grimble CUCBC Honorary Secretary -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Getting-on Race is a timed race from the Little Bridge to the finishing post 78 yards downstream of the Railway Bridge. The start is a rolling start. The fastest crews will qualify for the free places at the bottom of the bumps divisions. There are 49 men's crews competing for 18 places in the M3 and M4 divisions. There are 39 women's crews competing for 15 places in the W2 and W3 divisions. Crews that had a place in last year's start order will regain that place if they are successful in qualifying. *Marshaling before the Start* Due to the large number of crews involved the decision has been made to split this into 3 divisions of approximately 30 boats each - Division 1: Marshalling by 13:40 at Baitsbite lock. Racing from 2pm. Follow start marshaling instructions below. - Division 2: Marshalling by 14:30 between the Railway Bridge and P&E on towpath side in REVERSE ORDER i.e. crew 30 nearest the bridge. - Division 3: Marshalling by 15:30 between the Railway Bridge and P&E on towpath side in REVERSE ORDER. Any crew that is late to marshal will not be permitted to race. The schedule for so many boats is very tight and we cannot afford to run late. Please make sure you CHECK THE UPDATED START ORDER THE NIGHT BEFORE. Crews will be dropping out and we need everyone to know where they need to be on the day. Pleas remember your start number. NO STATIONARY PRACTICE STARTS WILL BE PERMITTED on the row up to the start line. *Marshaling at the Start* Due to the risk of strong stream the marshalling pattern when crews arrive at Baitsbite lock will be as follows: Crew 11-30 pull in between the start line and the lock on towpath side, the bottom crew nearest the lock. Crews will be rowing down in reverse order so it is important to remain in that order. Crews 1 -10 will pull in UPSTREAM of the start on towpath side when they arrive and follow the instructions of marshals. Once all lower crews are pulled in safely below the start these crews will be instructed to push out row downstream past the start then spin all at once and start racing immediately. I have attached a map to explain where to go, marshals will be on station to instruct you. *Crew scratches* In order to facilitate getting a final GoR start order complete with enough notice the scratch deadline for entries to be refunded will be 5pm on Wednesday 19th February i.e. 48 hours before the race. Any scratches hereafter will not be refunded. Any crew that races the GoR but does not qualify will be refunded half the entry fee. Not showing up for the race will be considered a scratch and receive no refund. *Division Changes* I was debating whether to say anything about this, but realised no matter what I did I would still receive a load of requests. We need to keep a cap on numbers per division so if you require a division swap please find another crew to swap with then email me with both crew representatives CC'ed in. *Subs* Please email me all sub requests ahead of time. Remember that anyone that races in a successful GoR crew may not then go on and compete for a higher crew. Making up your lower boat spaces with 1st boat rowers is not permitted in any way and will result in those rowers being forced to remain in the lower boat or be disqualified. All of this info will be updated to the website in due course. Any other questions please let me know. Last year we instituted a new system at the Boat Race finish. The finishline flag, dropped by the usual official, was repeated by a shadow flag-waver onto the Surrey bank, so that the timekeepers can see it from the following launches even if they are a long way behind a losing crew with a large margin. The 2013 shadower was a college oarsman, as we thought it would be a fun job for someone who hasn't been in a varsity squad to do. This was a great success, and became part of the event plan. Every year the main finish flag official is a former Boat Race full Blue from the same university as the rest of the adjudicators, umpires and officials. In odd years they are all from Oxford; in even years they are all from Cambridge. Therefore this year we are looking for a shadow flag-waver from the Fens, somebody who is a *current CU student* and who has *rowed or coxed for their college*. So: - Are you already planning to be in London on Sunday April 6th 2014? - Would you be willing to change your plans and spend the Isis-Goldie race (at 5:30pm) and the Boat Race (at 6pm) helping by acting as the shadow flag-waver near Chiswick Bridge? - Can you guarantee to turn up when asked to (you may need to allow travel time on Boat Race day)? - Can you keep your head under pressure? (the flag-waver will need to mirror the opposite flag, the official one, very precisely.) - You would need to be free from some time earlier in the day (to be briefed) until after the end of the main boat race, which will be approx 6:20-6:30pm. Briefing and duty times will be organised by finish judge Ben Kent. - No expenses paid, I'm afraid, but you will have a grandstand view of the finish line for both races and the satisfaction of knowing you helped the races go smoothly. Names submitted before noon on Friday 14th February 2014 will be passed on by me to the race organisers, who will have the final say. I won't reply directly, but the person invited will be contacted by the race officials. If you don't hear back from anyone it's probably because someone else got there before you. If the top person can't help after all, we will work down the list. We had a huge response from Oxford college rowers last year, so don't bother emailing after the deadline. To express your interest please email me back at rq at rowingservice.com, stating your name, mobile phone number, which college you rowed or coxed for and in which year(s). Thanks very much, Dr Rachel Quarrell Telegraph rowing correspondent and official Boat Race timekeeper. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This currently means that the bank of the common is a construction site and will be fenced off preventing access from the cycle path to the the river's edge. Clearly this is not ideal with this space due to be used for marshaling and our assembly area for upcoming rowing events. CUCBC are currently engaged in discussions with the contractors, Conservancy, City Council and CRA to aim to minimise the disruption this is going to cause. At the moment we are aiming to ensure that only a partial stretch of the common bank is closed off at any time until the end of the Lent Bumps with the contractors focusing on a short stretch (about 100m) immediately downstream from the Green Dragon footbridge so at least part of the area is still usable. As soon as we have more info we will let you know. Tom Grimble CUCBC Honorary Secretary -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It should be filled in and returned to me by a responsible person in the club - captain, boatman, safety officer etc. are all appropriate. We understand that crews change outing to outing because of illness, interviews etc., however require that all members of a crew should have completed at least 8 outings in the term. If a last-minute sub will not fulfil this requirement, please contact CUCBC to discuss the situation. Dispensation would normally be given for an experienced rower who has previously competed in bumps, though each case will be judged individually. No allowance whatsoever will be made for lower boats (or for first boats) who have failed to meet the 10-outing criteria because of poor conditions. There is a change to the declaration wording this term. If we find that a club has made a false declaration, ALL of their crews will be removed from the bumps, without negotiation. All places will be forfeited for next year's competition. With this term's competition for places any other action would be unfair to the other clubs on the river. Note also that your club's outing logs (which you all declared to keep last term) should be available for inspection upon request. As a result of the Green Dragon footbridge refurbishment and the associated changes to marshalling, it is vital that every cox is represented at one of the meetings. Between lighting down and 8:30am each club may only have 1 boat that proceeds downstream of Chesterton at any one time. However you are permitted to have one other boat on the water at a time along the boathouse stretch after 7:30am only in order to practice starts. This second crew may not boat past the Green Dragon Bridge. A note on bung starts, please keep the start sequence brief so as not to create too much wash and also please keep noise down if you are carrying them out in the morning.
