Dear Captains

The new Early Morning Marshals rota for this term has now been updated on
the CUCBC website <http://www.cucbc.org/marshals>

In accordance with Rule 34, the College clubs are required to provide
marshals to enforce the early morning noise and traffic restrictions.

Marshals should arrive at their station promptly at lighting down and
remain in position until 08:30. All of the equipment (bibs, clipboards,
record sheets) can be found on top of the pigeon holes at the back of
Goldie boathouse. Marshals should read the instructions on the website
before arriving for duty - Marshal

Please check the rota very carefully for your club's slots. Clubs will be
fined for failing to provide competent marshals.

Dear All,

At the start of each academic year, CUCBC carries out a check that all 
clubs hold appropriate insurance, and that details have been provided on 
the CUCBC website. Please note that appropriate insurance includes 
'Member to Member' insurance, i.e. the policy will cover situations 
where all parties are members of the same club (e.g. your M5 crashes in 
to your W3, with resulting injuries and chaos all round).

Currently there are only abour half of all clubs which show insurance 
policies in place that will still be valid when terms starts (which I am 
taking to be 8 October). Please make sure that you have provided details 
before the start of term, or your club will not be permitted to boat 
until I have seen evidence of such a policy.

In addition, note that in the Safety section of the CUCBC Handbook, 
point 4 gives a list of information which must be submitted by your 
club's Safety Officer by the end of Week 4. Please make sure that CUCBC 
has up-to-date contact details for your Safety Officers, and that the 
required statements are submitted on time. This year's statement is 
attached. While the eternal optimist deep within me would like to 
suggest that I'll get 31 copies back at the start of week 4, the more 
dominant pessimist tells me that I should nonetheless be resigned to 
emailing it around to you all at least thrice more. Details of the 
required information can be found at

any help. Regarding the last question, I certainly don't need a running 
score over the term of how many of your new recruits have decided that 
they don't like getting blisters/getting up 'early' for a 7.30 
outing/your LBCs! The question is included to give British Rowing an 
idea of the scale of participation in the sport, and a rough figure at 
some point in Week 3/4 will be fine.

Dear captains

Due to the new building work at the back of Goldie boathouse leaving a lack
of pidgeonholes, the early morning marshal kit has been relocated to St
Catharine's Boathouse next door.

The kit can be found on the balcony up the stairs in a box. Please make
sure that your club's marshals return it there at the end of their shifts.

I would also make a plea to everyone to please report if any of the kit is
missing when you turn up or if the folders run out of report forms etc. We
update the folders every few days but sometimes they do get lost or damaged.

I have updated the instructions in the folders and on the website to
reflect this change.

As a result of failure to submit valid insurance details at the start of 
term, the following clubs are banned from the river until further notice:

Addenbrookes
LMBC
Lucy Cavendish
Magdalene
Newnham
Robinson
St Edmunds
Vet School

Any of the above clubs who do not boat until they have sent me a copy of 
their insurance policies, and received acknowledgement, will not face 
any penalties. Those that do without seeking and receiving express 
permission will face penalties, either monetary or training related.

For those clubs on the list, I expect to see a copy of your insurance 
certificate, including confirmation of the inclusion of 'member to 
member' insurance.

The University Fours 2013 will run from Monday 28th October to Friday 1st
November. Entries are now open.

There will be the following divisions provided there are sufficient
entries. Please be aware that this year *ALL* races will be run as timed
races on the Colquhoun Sculls course.

The deadline for entries is Friday 18th October at 6pm. The entry fee is

Peterhouse College.

CUCBC bills must also be paid in full by this date.

Captains,

As you probably know, next Saturday (19th of October) is the RRBC Autumn
Head.

We've a lower than usual number of entries from the colleges this year and
we're speculating that this is because the regatta has fallen early in the
term.

We'd love to see your crews racing as it makes for a better regatta for
all; particularly the large number of crews that are travelling to
Cambridge for the day.  Not to mention the useful benchmark it provides you
and your rowers at this early stage in the season.

Anyway, in the interests of seeing a few more of your crews rowing next
weekend, we're extending the deadline for entries to 6pm on Monday 12th of
October.   You can enter by:

   - filling in the forms on the RRBC website (
   http://robroyboatclub.net/?page_id=63) and emailing them to me or
   dropping them at 28 Lyndewode Road; or
   - emailing me the crew details in a spreadsheet.


The entry fee is ?64 for an 8+ and ?32 for 4 (x/+/-).  You can sort payment
by cheque or BACS anytime between now and the race day.

and convenience, and for the convenience and safety of all others who use
the river. For example, please note:

*32.* That all crews must not create unnecessary noise anywhere on the
river before 7.30am.
*33.* In particular, loud hailers may not be used anywhere on the river and
the use of cox-boxes, and coaching from the bank must be kept to a minimum
everywhere on the river before 7.30am. There will be no coaching from the
bank above the railway bridge before 7.30am

Please email me any time constraints you would like considered when races
are being scheduled.

The races are due to run from 2pm to 4pm each day during the week although
if possible we will try and minimise the number of days we run on. Races
will start at 2pm so crews will need to be marshalled before this at
Baitsbite.

Please reply to this email with concise responses i.e.

Division: i.e. Men/Women 1st/2nd/coxless
Crew: e.g. <College> M/W 1/2/3 etc.
List of times NOT possible: e.g. Tuesday 3-4pm

This just makes it a lot easier to read when we get 30+ emails to go
through.

We will try and accommodate as many constraints as is feasible but please
be aware that this may not be the case and not all requests will be
possible.

The crew change policy is that the crew that turns up for the first race is
considered the crew for the remainder of the week. No crew changes will be
permitted after the first race except in the case of accident/injury.
Please consider this when checking with your crews. We will not be able to
permit subs just because they have a supervision.

Deadline for time constraints is *Tuesday 5pm* i.e. end of tomorrow. The
schedule will then hopefully be out by Wednesday.

Dear fellow Captains,

This might be a slightly unusual request and I sincerely wish that it was a joke, but unfortunately I am serious.

A giant and ancient turtle shell (about 60-80cm in height) with the St John's Crest painted on its back that was on display in the LMBC boat house has gone missing. We are currently pursuing all avenues and believe that it might have been snatched as some sort of prank.

I am therefore asking for your help: Have you recently heard any chat in your boathouse or anywhere else about such a prank? Please rest assured that we will take no further steps should the issue be resolved. Please also send me a short line if you have not heard anything.

If the shell cannot be recovered we will have to get the police involved.

Dear all,

This is the time of the year you've been waiting for. After having been
distracted by these weird races in eights (bumps I seem to remember them
being called), it is now time for the race of the year which really
matters, *Uni Fours*.

Uni Fours will this year be run *Monday 28th October - Friday 1st
November*and marshals will be required
*1:30pm - 4pm*.

There will be *cake*, provided by the clubs which have paid their
bill/entry fee too late.

Please reply if you would like to volunteer for any of the
marshalling/umpiring slots on any of these days, also if you can only make
a part of the time slot.

As per usual, if there are not enough volunteers, the boat clubs
participating will have to provide more.

The University IVs draw and race timetable is now available online

We have attempted to accommodate as many scheduling requests as possible
but inevitably there will be some problems.

Late arrivals to marshaling may not be permitted to race. If you do expect
a late arrival please email CUCBC to advise asap.

A reminder about the rule on subs: the crew that arrives for the first race
is the crew for the week. Changing of the crew after the first race is not
permitted without the express permission of the CUCBC committee and this
will only be granted in exceptional circumstances i.e. accident or injury.

Please check your race times *VERY VERY* carefully.

If you have a serious problem with some of the race times please do the
following:

   1. Get in contact with your opposition - boat club captain emails
   available on CUCBC website <http://www.cucbc.org/clubs>
   2. Find any alternate times *BEFORE* the next round race
   3. Then and *ONLY* then email tom at cucbc.org with alternate times
   4. Do all this before Sunday 5pm

Dear Captains

We are currently incredibly short of people to run the Uni IVs race next
week.

Unless we get people volunteering there will be no races. If your club is
competing then you should also be providing volunteers to help run the
races.

If we don't have sufficient volunteers by tomorrow we will be assigning a
rota for all competing clubs to provide people to carry out the necessary
jobs and there will be fines for not sending someone.

So if you want to be able to choose slots rather than be forced into
specific times I would encourage you to get volunteers to come forward now
and email Henk-Jaap (juniortreasurer at cucbc.org).

Dear Captains,

It appears the captains list is causing some problems today, this has been
held without sending for some time.

There have been almost no volunteers to help with marshaling Uni IVs this
week.

*Without marshals there will be no races*, therefore we have made a rota
based on the entries, see below for the list.

It is essential that if you are assigned a slot that someone turns up: we
are tight enough as it is. Otherwise it will be necessary to fine similar
to Bumps.

Marshals for the early division meet 13:30 at the Combined Boat Houses
(i.e. King's, Selwyn, ...), the late division meet 14:30 at finish (i.e.
railway bridge).

Swapping with another college is allowed as long as you sort it between you
and someone turns up otherwise you are still responsible for your slots.

On a side note, despite all the horror stories, it seems that the storm is
not going to be as bad as it was made out to be, in which case it will be
yellow flag. If the flag is red, it will have to be rearranged.
