I served for two years as CULRC Hon. Sec. in 2006-08, and have since remained active both as a coach and as a bumps umpire. At the start of each academic year, CUCBC carries out a check that all clubs hold appropriate insurance, and that details have been provided on the CUCBC website. Currently there are only a handful of clubs which show valid insurance policies in place. Please make sure that you have provided details before the start of term, or your club will not be permitted to boat until I have evidence of a policy. In addition, note that in the Safety section of the CUCBC Handbook, point 4 gives a list of information which must be submitted by your club's Safety Officer by the end of Week 4. Please make sure that CUCBC has up-to-date contact details for your Safety Officers, and that the required statements are submitted on time. Details of the required information can be found at http://www.cucbc.org/handbook/safety - please let me know if you need any help. The course will cover the basics of coaching novice rowers, give advice on effective coaching and will give important information on safety aspects. The LBCs from each college club are expected to attend, and a register of attendance will be taken. Those who cannot attend in person should send a suitable representative. Personally I think that this could be a very simple solution to the usual Michaelmas congestion, but I'm sure that just over half of you wouldn't agree with me. Please therefore ensure that insurance information is provided before term starts. Any clubs which have not submitted information by 1st October will not be permitted to boat. The Events Secretary helps with the organisation and running of races, though you are still able to enter all the major events yourself. The post involves helping out by arranging umpiring kit when it is loaned to college events. You will also liase with the producers of the Bumps programmes and help organise their distribution. Further involvement with CUCBC races is welcomed, but not essential. In all, a fun job if you want to get involved with running races on the Cam! Many thanks, Holly Dr Holly Hedgeland Cambridge University Combined Boat Clubs
