I would like to draw your attention to the following suggestion for a very Cambridge rowing related gift. Tom Davies, CUCBC Senior Committee member, has kindly produced several watercolours that show off the beauty of rowing on the Cam. These include many familiar sights and some we may take for granted or miss while in the boat or coaching from the bank Attached are sample images of two prints currently available for purchase. One a magnificent collage of the bumps course and a second showing the boat houses along the cam. These watercolour prints make a fantastic gift for anyone currently or previously involved in rowing on the Cam. They are printed on high quality watercolour paper and so personal touches can be added for an extra fee (though maybe not in time for this term's dinners). Past requests have included personalised messages in hand calligraphy, labelling of the boat houses, and even additional pictures such as sinking boats or angry swans! Basic price is ?20 a print, if collected in Cambridge. Extras for personal Calligraphy and additions to paintings priced after discussion with Tom Davies. If you are interested and would like to purchase or enquire about a print then please email Tom Davies at twd10 at cam.ac.uk Many thanks and good luck this week, Sam Foster (WCBC) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Looking forward to the final results tomorrow! Remember that the first division of the day (M4) starts at 12:40 tomorrow. Crews should be on station 15 minutes before. Christ's, Jesus and Queens' W1 will be rerowing from stations 1, 2 and 3 respectively tomorrow. The rerow will happen at 12:35. Rerow crews should be marshalled on stations 1, 2 and 3 at least 10 minutes before their start. M4 crews should marshall as normal by 12:25, however crews 1, 2 and 3 should wait downstream of station 3, pulled in out of the way of other stations. Remember when racing to watch out for other crews on the river and potential obstructions ahead in case you need to steer round or stop. Don't get tunnel vision! Likewise watch out for returning crews when rowing to the start - there were 2 near misses today! Please remember that bank parties are limited to 4 per crew. Excess members should wait and cycle behind the division so as not to impede the umpires. The towpath is likely to be busy tomorrow - please watch where you are going and be courteous to members of the public. Yes, this year's Cats Cardinals is now open for race entries! With everyone getting some good warm up races under their belts in Lent Bumps, we expect this year to be bigger than ever. On Thursday 17th of March, 2011, mixed IV and VIII crews are invited to take part in a knockout race on the 500m of the reach. Crews can be from any collection of colleges, town clubs and societies - as long as you have noviced, you can race! Message-ID: TO: Captains and TO: Coxes FROM: Chairman CUCBC DATE: Saturday 12th March 2011 Good afternoon All Not long to go until the end of term. I hope you are enjoying still calm conditions on the water today, as it is down here in Henley, but please remember that noise carries. Just a gentle reminder about cox boxes in the early morning outings, in the light of the Environmental Officer's well intended email of 11th March which I set out in full at the foot of my email. CUCBC Rules 32 and 33 state: - *32.* That all crews must not create unnecessary noise anywhere on the river before 7.30am. - *33.* In particular, loud hailers may not be used anywhere on the river and the use of cox-boxes, and coaching from the bank must be kept to a minimum everywhere on the river before 7.30am. There will be no coaching from the bank above the railway bridge before 7.30am. Contrary to what the Environmental Officer states below, we do use cox boxes in the early mornings "for operational commands" (for safety reasons) and I will be reminding him of this. PLEASE KEEP THE VOLUME CONTROL ON YOUR COX BOXES TURNED DOWN BUT SUFFICIENT TO ENABLE YOU TO COX SAFELY. Coxes: Please ask your coaches to monitor your volume as they are up on the bank and can better hear the sound effect from up there. If CHRISTS could apologise to CYGNET, then I am sure we would all appreciate it. Apologies and a smile are all that it takes on occasion. Thank you for listening. Richard Hamersley Chairman CUCBC SEE EMAIL BELOW (which was forwarded on to me by Dick Pryce-Jones at CUBC): From: Daniel Bayles [mailto:] Sent: 11 March 2011 14:16 To: dick at cubc.org.uk Cc: river.manager at camconservators.org.uk Subject: Noise Before 7:30 am Good Afternoon Dick I have been passed an email, sent to Dr Philippa Noon, from a river boat resident about noise from the use of cox boxes upstream of the railway bridge before 7:30 am. The email was copied to all the City Councillors. It is my understanding that cox boxes should not be used until after 7:30 am. This is obviously now a problem as the mornings are lighter and the crews are out earlier. I ask that the crews and particularly the coxes and coaches be given a gentle reminder of the needs of the residents along the river. I would be grateful if you could do this. The email also reports a collisions yesterday (Thursday 10 March) between Christ College's boat CC0 804 and the moored 'Widebeam' boat Cygnet whist the Chris's boat was spinning. The email does not give full details, but no damage is reported, only the annoyance of the resident is that the neither the crew, cox or coach acknowledged the occupier or incident and no apology was offered. I suggest Christ's President may wish to either speak or drop the resident of Cygnet a note in order to placate them. Good Luck to the crews on the 26th. We believe that it is important that we assist the colleges in developing their mens rowing programs. It is no coincidence that when there is a strong mens college system, the CUBC squad is also strong. We are willing to help individuals and colleges in the coming Easter Term where possible . We will once again be running the CUBC Development Squad for those students that have shown potential in their college programme and who are interested in competing for the university in the summer regattas (Met, Marlo and Henley) . I would encourage you all to pass this information onto the rowers in your club who may be interested in being involved in the CUBC programme over summer and trialling in the 2011/2012 Boat Race Campaign. I have attached a document outlining how the Development Squad will be run. Can you please pass this on to your club coaches (as they will be able to help identify future Goldie and Blue Boat rowers in your crews) as well as those individuals you think would be keen. The CUBC Summer Development Squad will run alongside the CUBC Henley crews and will have access to all the CUBC facilities and coaches. I have also attached a registration form for those interested. This year Steve Trapmore (CUBC Chief Coach) and I are looking at opening up the CUBC Goldie facilities to College Mens 1st Boats for erging/indoor tank sessions). It is intended that we will make four 30-60 minute blocks per week where college 1st Mens Crews can book in to use the ergomoters and rowing tank. It is intended that these sessions will be supervised by Steve and myself so that your mens 1st boat receives coaching and or advice from one or both of us. We are still discussing how this will work, but it is intended it will be on a booking system that would require the college captains to book in to secure a slot. We are discussing ligisticas of how this will work, so will send through more detailed information on this at a later date. We will also try and offer on Cam coaching to college mens 1st boats over the summer term. If you, your club or any individuals are interested in any of the above points, please contact me via email. I will try to respond ASAP, but this may be after the Boat Race on 26th March. We just want to get in touch with everyone to give you some more details about the development squad that we run in the summer so that you can start to put some details in your diaries. * What is Dev Squad? Following the end of the summer term, we run a four week development group where we bring together people from all colleges who are considering rowing for the University in the Henley Boat Races 2012. You will work in small groups with the CUWBC coaches to rapidly increase the standard of your rowing. It will also give you an idea of the level of training that we will expect of you when you are trialling. You will spend a significant proportion of the time in Dev Squad working in small boats, and learning to scull. This will give you a solid base on which to build in September when trialling for the University squads begins in earnest. * Why should I do it? Your standard of rowing will improve markedly in that time. The weather is generally good, and there are plenty of opportunities to race both on and off the Cam, building your experience further. You will learn how to race side-by-side with other crews. * But I don't think I'm good enough! Let us be the judge of that. We are looking for potential. It doesn't matter to us whether your crew has been Head of the River, or lost every race. We don't care whether you are in the first boat at a big college, or a lower boat at a small college. What we are looking for is the potential to help us beat Oxford in 2012. * What are the dates? We will start on Monday 27th June, the Monday after May Week, and run through to 24th July. But if people are around in Cambridge longer over the summer, most of the coaches live here (or nearby) and will absolutely be keen to keep working with people. * Ok, I'm interested, what do I have to do? Drop an e-mail to dev-squad at cuwbc.org - we don't need to know much from you at this stage. When you do so, please let us know your availability (in case there are any dates when you will have to be away from Cambridge). Also let us know if you're around over the Easter holidays at all, as there may be the potential to organise some sessions there as well. There will be a meeting at the start of next term for anyone who has expressed an interest. We're a bit caught up in the preparation for this weekend at the moment so haven't set a date yet, but it will be before the 3rd May because our Blue Boat and head coach are leaving for a rowing trip to go and compete in Seattle that day (just one of the reasons why rowing for CUW this year has been great). If anyone has any questions, please get in touch. Our aim is for you to become the best athletes you possibly can, progressing from college level rowing, to University rowing, and then potentially onwards to row for GB U23 and beyond. We want to help you achieve great things. And we want to beat Oxford. You can help us do that! We hope to hear from you soon, CUWBC Anne Hempel CUWBC Secretary -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
