There were a few mishaps, but that's all part of the fun of novice racing! Noone was injured, so I'm happy. Novice Results are now available. http://jcbc.jesus.cam.ac.uk/Fairbairns/results.php As per this years change to rules 7.c and 13.e, crews that did not request an increased time gap in advance of the races and were held up have not received time bonuses. The only crew to receive a time bonus was LMBC NM4, who were granted a time bonus, but were still held up. Minor obstructions (no time bonus awarded): 141 - LMBC NM3 - Held up by Magdalene NM2. 148 - ARU NM3 - Delayed in restarting after a crash at Chesterton by a crashed Jesus NM3. 212 - LMBC NM2 - Held up by a Girton NM2 crab. Major obstructions (no time bonus awarded): 156 - St Mary's School - Held up by Pembroke NW1 from the combined boat houses to men's top finish. 163 - Downing NW1 - Held up by Magdalene NW1 from the combined boat houses to men's top finish. Time Penalties: 147 - ARU NM1 - Aggressive language from bank party instructing Jesus NM3 to move over for an overtake before men's top finish. Jesus took a wide line to allow the overtake after Chesterton, ARU did not steer tight enough, pushing Jesus wider and causing them to crash. Time penalty: 10 seconds. Full details are to be found on the BR website - please ask their webmaster if you need help accessing your club's form. The deadline for responses is the 31st December. Any clubs not having completed the form by this date will be unable to enter BR races (e.g. HoRR) until their response has been accepted. However, for the sake of my social life I'd ask you to complete the audits as far before Christmas as possible; I'm not going to be sitting at home on New Year's Eve reading the 20-odd outstanding audit forms. Please note that those alumni clubs who occasionally race off-Cam are not exempt from this. The form is, however, much simpler as you can simply claim your college club as a 'host', rendering 90% of the form superfluous and able to be left blank. Hi, I'm writing from the BBC history series 'Who Do You Think You Are'. The series helps well-known celebrities trace their family history and aims to put that family history into its social context. I hope you may be able to help with our filming. We're filming a sequence at St John's in January and will be filming on the Cam by the Lady Margaret Boat Club on Saturday 7th January. One of the ancestors we're looking at rowed during his time at Cambridge, so we'd like to get some shots of boat(s) going past on the river. I'm aware this is before the beginning of term so it's unlikely there'll be many student crews on the river, but would you be able to contact any rowers who will be in Cambridge on the Saturday and ask if they would be able to help us out? An eight would be wonderful, but if we could get together a four that would be great. It would be for half an hour/ an hour from 3pm on Saturday 7th January. Beer money can be provided for anyone who can help! Please forgive the intrusion to your mailing list, but I wanted to draw your attention to a race being held in February that might be of interest to you! The University of Worcester Rowing Club (UWRC) will be running our Head of the Severn race again on 5 February 2012. It is split into three divisions with a wide range of categories. The long course (6km downstream) is perfect for crews preparing for the tideway eights heads, being of a very similar duration and with high levels of competition. Our race is a little unusual in that we run under both BUCS and British Rowing rules, meaning that those who are not BR members are still able to compete as long as they are full members of their university/college clubs. Our middle division is aimed exclusively for less experienced rowers who still want great racing - BR novice and BUCS beginners (4.5km downstream). For further information please have a look at our website http://www.worcesterunirowing.com/HOTS or email me with any questions. We are also asking everyone thinking of coming to join our facebook event at https://www.facebook.com/events/124901974272003/ so we can spread news about the race, and also to sort out numbers for the barbeque! Hope to see you there! The number of crews entering has increased year by year. For the 2011 race we were able to accept 110 (the maximum allowed by the Port of London Authority without a river closure) but we had to turn away another 40. For the 2012 race we are paying to have the river closed, so we will no longer be limited by the PLA's maximum. One other change for the 2012 race is that we have slightly extended the course. It will still start from the University Stone at Chiswick Bridge but the finish will be at Harrod's rather than at Hammersmith Bridge. Full details are at www.quintinboatclub.org/quintinhead . As a result of this, you will be unable to enter any BR events until your submission has been reviewed and accepted. Under rule 5b of the Safety section of the CUCBC handbook this means that you are also ineligible to enter CUCBC races. Practically speaking, this means that have some 5 or 6 weeks to complete your audits before the deadline for Lent Bumps entries. Any clubs with ideas of entering Tideway races would do well to get this sorted rather sooner though. If you have any problems with the BR website/system, please contact their webmaster. If you require advice as to how to answer certain questions, please contact me. Regards, Mark Jacobs CUCBC Safety Officer
