All new LBCs are expected to attend the course. The session will cover safety, equipment and coaching. A register will be taken at the course since it is important that everyone who will be coaching lower boats is aware of their responsibilities and liabilities. If a lower boats captain is unable to attend, please inform us by email (to seniortreasurer at cucbc.org) in order that we can provide you with a copy of the handout, to ensure that you are not in breach of the article below. In addition to LBCs, the course is appropriate for others who will be coaching next year. I remind you that the CUCBC handbook specifies: "That coaches for college crews and for scullers have undergone at least the minimum training, which is attendance at the CUCBC course at the beginning of the Michaelmas term, and later when required (from September 2007), and that they are members of the ARA or otherwise insured." We're really keen to encourage applicants and get more people involved in CUCBC and running bumps. Captains, please do forward this to your clubs. Thanks! As a new initiative this academic year we are seeking to co-opt two Events Secretaries and a (Junior) Treasurer to the Executive Committee. The roles represent an opportunity to get involved in the running of CUCBC and the organisation of our events: a reasonable level of commitment will be required but gaining experience in the organisation of events with 2000 participants is good cv-worthy stuff! Detailed descriptions of the roles are given below, and we are looking for students with a background in rowing on the Cam, with other relevant organisational experience also welcome. The vacancies are compatible with rowing this year and competing in Fairbairns/Lents/Mays. If you are interested in either post, please send a brief resume of relevant experience to seniortreasurer at cucbc.org by the end of Tuesday 5th October. Selected applicants will be invited to the start of term Executive Committee meeting and presented to the first Captains' Meeting of term (Tuesday 12th October) for approval. For more information please see our website. We are looking forward to a successful two terms, after which we will return your rowers to you fitter, stronger and faster in time for Mays. We are looking for potential openweights and lightweights. To be considered as a potential lightweight rowers must weigh around 64kg or less, and must be judged to be safely able to get down to 59kg for boat race day. If you have any clashes with other commitments, let me know sooner rather than later so I have time to work around them - but remember that I can't guarantee to take all timetable considerations into account. One potential clash of which I am already aware is that there are some crews doubling up in the Men's coxed and coxless fours - if one of these gets to the final of the M4+ then I will move the M4+ final so it is on a different day to the M4- races. However, the operative word in that sentence is 'few' as currently I have only heard from enough people to run races on Wednesday and Friday, and even on those days I only have the bare minimum (four including myself) which will mean longer times between races and a greater potential for delays if anything goes wrong. If I do not get more volunteers, I will cancel all events apart from the men's coxless fours and women's first coxed fours, and move all the women's coxed fours races to Wednesday (possibly with the final on Friday). If you don't want this to happen, offer to umpire - it's that simple. These two races were rowed over a different distance to the formal Boat Races and ended just upstream of Remenham Farm - a distance of about 1350 metres. Deliberately, no times were taken and no Medals were awarded. The Organisers' intention was to increase public and college interest in the Henley Boat Races. The Organisers have decided to repeat the event for two College races on Sunday 27th March 2011 (the day that Summer time begins) on the same basis as last year. One for Men and one for Women. Full Term ends on Friday 18th March and, as we discovered last year, not every college crew is available beyond Full Term nor would necessarily wish to participate in this event. Last year, the time scale in which they asked us to organise this was very tight and therefore less than ideal. So we invited crews in the Lents First Division, starting with the Head Crews and working down the First Division Final Order until we found a crew that would accept the challenge (For Head Crew, FaT M1, this was possible as they were rowing in the HOR at Putney the day before. Not ideal for them, but they took up the challenge and won, beating Balliol). For the Women, it was late in the day and many crews had already disbanded as they had already done their WEHORR race, but eventually we got down to Queens, who fortuitously had their cox, Kate Richards, coxing the Women's Lightweight Blue Boat in the Boat Races, so their W1 were coming to support her and unexpectedly ended up with a race on their hands, which they also won, beating Worcester). Selecting crews from the Lents in this way does not necessarily produce the fastest crew, but it may be a practical solution in the circumstances, but we want you to decide this, please. Question for you to vote on: 1 Do we continue to select an M1 and W1 crew in this way? Yes / No. 2 If "No", please suggest what realistic method you would prefer (and we will consider - hopefully nothing too elaborate. The Organisers have asked for a prompt response so your cooperation would be much appreciated). Voting deadline: Midnight Tuesday 2nd November. Please VOTE using my personal Gmail address (per this email) - so just hit the REPLY button..... and please STATE your Boat Club. (NOTE: This is only open to Cambridge College Boat Clubs for the special purpose of the Oxford v Cambridge Boat Races event). Thank you for your assistance. Lighting times can be found on the CUCBC website - http://www.cucbc.org If you are out within 15 minutes after lighting down or before lighting up, you will need a *white* light attached to both the bow and stern of your boat. Note that a red light is not a white light (it may seem obvious, but Cambridge students have been known to make this mistake in the past). Lights are required for safety as it is starting to get dark at these times and your boat needs to be visible to others on the river. No college crew may be on the water before lighting down or after lighting up. Only overtake another crew when it is a) Safe to do so b) There are no crews coming the other way c) You are not on a bend (including under the Railway Bridge) d) You can safely get around them and back to your side of the river without impeding them or other crews e) You have asked to "come by" (and received a response) so that everyone is aware of the manoeuvre you are attempting to make. It is generally considerate for slower crews to let faster crews by (and to keep tucked in so they can get by), though faster crews should not overtake unless the above conditions are met! Though please be aware that when overtaking a novice crew they may have difficulty getting out the way as new coxes are getting to grips with steering. Please be patient and do not just go charging through at full speed!! Dangerous overtaking can lead to potentially serious accidents - let's not let them happen! There have been a couple of alterations to the timetable to take into account crews scratching, but those directly affected should already have been contacted. Please be aware of the following points: 1) Hours of darkness - now the clocks have gone back, it will begin to get dark not long after 4 pm. Even if the last race in your event is scheduled to end before 4pm, delays can and do occur, so the racing may overrun long enough that you will have to return to the boathouses in twilight or after dusk. All racing crews, with the possible exception of those who have an odd round as the first race of the day then go straight home, should carry lights. 2) Clothing - the weather forecast for the next few days is relatively good, but you will still have to sit around for tens of minutes while other races go off. Make sure you wear enough that you are still warm when it is your turn to race. 3) Bow Balls / heel restraints - committee members may make [pseudo]random spot checks of bow balls, heel restraints and other safety equipment. If your boat is found to be unsafe, you will not be allowed to race. 4) Marshalling times - One crew being late to marshal can delay racing for everybody. While I will obviously be lenient to crews who are late because their previous race was delayed, any crew turning up late to their first race of the day will be given an official warning equivalent to a false start (if they are less than two minutes late for their marshalling slot) or disqualified (if more than two minutes late). Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. -- Chris Kerr St Catharine's College CULRC Hon: Sec: 2008-11
