Although we are currently at a yellow flag, *crews that do boat MUST spin upstream of the Motorway Bridge*. The stream makes the area around Baitsbite lock very dangerous. Please also be reminded (as usual) that just because a flag permits certain crews to boat, this doesn't necessarily mean that conditions are appropriate for your particular crew. We should be grateful if you could refer to the attached schedule of races at Cam Sailing Club, Waterbeach, before planning your outings to reduce any potential disruption to the Club?s sailing races. Byelaw 6.11 applies (no person may pass a boat race etc.). A number of these CSC dates are junior/youth events. Wind and river flow conditions may constrain the manoeuvrability of these sailing vessels and they may react in an unpredictable manner. Therefore, please use a safe and appropriate level of speed between Clayhithe Bridge and Bottisham and take note of any instructions issued by the Sailing Club organisers in attendance. This was finally received this Tuesday, and the latter is attached. We have taken the view that this is a significant new and very visible event, and has to be organised in such a way that it is credible and does not potentially reflect badly on either the clubs that take part, or the Henley event and the two University clubs themselves. Thus, we do not consider, and have stated this very clearly to HBROC, that sufficient consideration had been given this year on an appropriate timescale or mechanism as to how the participating clubs would be nominated/selected. In particular, we do not consider that, at this late stage (or even after the last Captains meeting), it would be satisfactory to decide this by some 'ad hoc' sparring between crews somewhere on the river. If this event is to become regular, or in future to expand in any way, it has to include a proper selection mechanism and, if this is to include any form of race, then this has to be properly organised (if not, there are serious legal and insurance implications in the event of any problem arising), agreed in advance with the local river authority, and properly advertised, organised, and open to all who wish to be considered within the bounds set by HBROC for eligibility. This is not something that can be done at the drop of a hat. These conditions cannot be met this year. Therefore we have approached the two Head crews from the Lents, who have confirmed both their eligibility under the HBROC guidelines for the event, and that they are prepared to compete. I would also note that, in terms of precedent, there are many for extending invitations for participation in external events to Oxbridge College Head crews, and progressing down the Bumps finishing order in sequence should the first invitees be unavailable. Therefore, and in consultation with HBROC, we have nominated these two crews. If this event continues into future years, CUCBC and its constituent Clubs will need to agree a formal mechanism for identifying future nominations. My apologies if you didn't know Pam and Bertie but i'm sure there are many on this list that did. Bertie had tremendous enthusiasm for the river. A boatbuilder by trade. Up until last year he was the cambridge agent for ES Rowing Services formerly Matt Wood and Eton Racing Boats. He supplied most boat clubs on the river with the spares for racing boats. He was a member of the Cambridge Motor Boat Club for many years. Last October Bertie sadly had a stroke and despite some encouraging early signs he never really recovered. I'm sure he will be missed by many on the river. Funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed. With the kind approval of the CUBC committee we are writing to you on the captains list in an important matter in which we need your help. As a one of the top 20 business schools in the world, Cambridge Judge Business School is also competing fiercely with Oxford Said Business School and the school is now preparing for one of the highlights in its' social life - the yearly Varsity-like sports match between Cambridge Judge Business School and Oxford Said Business School which we are honoured to host in Cambridge this year. Judge Business School does not have its own boats and members usually row with their colleges. We will however need boats for the competition with Oxford. Therefore we are approaching you with the request if you can rent us a boat which we will insure on our own behalf. The race against Oxford Said business school will be in 8+ and there are two teams on every side so we are looking for four eights. Also there will be a womens' crew on each side which will however compete in 4+. Therefore we are additionally looking for two 4+. This matter is not only important to the reputation of the business school but supposedly also for Cambridge because the Oxford guys would basically just laugh their heads off, if we were not even able to provide boats for a rowing match and would surely quickly spread the word. Therefore we urgently want to ask you to support this - Judge Business School can pay a rent for the boats and will also insure the boats on its own behalf. Your support would be most appreciated by Judge Business School! We are looking forward to hear from you Sebastian Brenner & Martin Schiffhauer ______________________________________ Martin Schiffhauer McKinsey & Company, Inc.
